  • The Mr Chelsea Body Beautiful talent competition is held on the Kings Road in London. Entrants are handsome males and girls showing their muscles and well-trimmed bodies. We see hairy chests, pectorals and biceps on-show by these young exhibitionists who parade themselves in the open-air. Slightly behind them there are also two elderly ladies looking like sisters or perhaps twins. They were once beautiful themselves and sit eagerly on a bench against a wall peering at the handsome young men, wishing they were young again. One holds a walking stick and the other grasps a bottle of wine. It is a scene of young and old, of youth and ageing beauty.

  • A young lad of 10 poses for a portrait taken by his brother while holding the hand of his young nephew. Confusingly, the 10 year-old uncle and the 1 year-old child are closer in age than the two brothers. The older boy is on holiday in Malawi visiting expat family in the then capital, Blantyre, so named after the town in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, where the explorer David Livingstone was born. Both boys stand in the dust of a back yard where a broken windmill remains upright in the intense brightness of mid-day. It is a scene of awkward and gangly boyhood versus the confidence and innocence of young childhood and their posture is exaggerated by differing heights. Kodachrome film has a wonderful magenta colour cast in mid-tones reminiscent of the classic days of early photography when shifts in color gave a faded look.

  • A young, vulnerable-looking youth stands close to two members of a local Evangelical church who are using a carpet warehouse as a temporary Ministry. Rolls of carpets and rugs are behind these Christians as the two officials practice the 'laying on of hands' to cleanse the soul of their young convert during a religious meeting in Newport, Wales. As the ceremony takes place when this boy is persuaded to accept Jesus into his life, two retail signs proclaim the prices and credit terms of the household items. The laying on of hands is a religious practice found throughout the world in varying forms. In Christian churches, this practice is used as both a symbolic and formal method of invoking the Holy Spirit during baptisms, healing services, blessings, and ordination of priests, ministers, elders, deacons, and other holy church ceremonies.

  • A young boy eats an ice cream below portraits of the BMX athlete Shanaze Reade and celebrated diver Tom Daley, both funded by the National Lottery, an exhibition featured in the Olympic Park during the London 2012 Olympics. As the tally for gold medals climbed, so the argument over government funding for the young gathered pace. In times of austerity, schools and sports clubs had their budgets for sport reduced and Team GB's success raised more concerns for the future of British youth as potential medal winners.

  • Emma and Martin are a young professional couple living in the experimental community village of Poundbury, Dorset, England. Sitting in their landscaped rear garden the married couple have their portrait taken against a high concrete wall that serves as their property's back boundary. The roofs of neighbouring homes appear over this partition and young tree saplings are fastened to a stake. Poundbury is the visionary model village that the Charles, Prince of Wales sought to develop in 1993 as a successful and pioneering town near Dorchester, built on land owned by his own Duchy of Cornwall, challenging otherwise poor post-war trends in town planning and to some extent following the New Urbanism concept from the US except that the design influences are European.

  • Two young British Asian men stand in front of a Bollywood action hero poster, while waiting for a bus in Southhall, West London, England. The lads are in their early twenties and are dressed against the cold European winter. The muscular Indian man in the movie poster is in his prime, posing as a tough guy and making a serious face towards the viewer, his rippling biceps wet with sweat. We see two ordinary young men living the harsh reality of life in a big English city, with all the pressures, paradoxes and cultural differences of India or Bangladesh, and that of multicultural Britain. It may be sunny but the biting winter day is raw with cold.

  • Good-looking trendy young people spill out of a pub one sunny afternoon in fashionable Notting Hill in West London. Their confidence and sense of fun and living for the moment is seen in their clothes and style. But out-of-sight around the corner on this street stands a rather nervous-looking poor woman, an elderly lady perhaps in her sixties who is holding some shopping bags with her coat buttoned up, despite being warm outside. Her demeanour is that of tiredness and hardship - the opposite of the young generation. There is a wide generation gap here: The division of wealth, health and outlook between these two demographic groups which also symbolises a modern Britain, used to the class system that is alive and well.

Tony Blair MP helps launch a 1992 General Election campaign referring to Prime Minister John Major' failing policies, at Millbank, the notorious Labour Party headquarters in central London. Then, Blair had the shadow employment brief, five years before he went on to beat John Major in the '97 election as Labour Party Leader and Prime Minister. We see him here as a still ambitious, young-looking front-bench Labour politician with a fresh face and very dark hair. He wears a Labour rose in his suit's lapel.

  • A group of American interior design students sketch buildings adjacent while sitting on steps of public building in Florence's Piazza Di Annunziata. The small class is made up mostly of young women and there is a young man who is apparently teaching one woman how to capture the finer points of the architecture opposite. They all have sketchpads on their laps and are either looking into the distance, memorising the landscapes - or using pencils to reproduce these features on to paper. Florence and other Italian cities are full of young Americans studying music and painting, art and design, completing and complimenting US-based courses often as foreign exchange students or as residential terms.

The kids gaze into many directions while two village elders attend to domestic chores in the dirt. Beyond them, we see snow capped peaks of Himalayan mountains. Gorkha has lent its name to the Gurkha soldier, from where young teenage boys are typically recruited for service into the British army, a tradition that goes back to the Indian Mutiny of 1857

  • As a young office worker sleeps incongruously on a marble pavement, a street sweeper nearby brushes away litter with a small dustpan. The manual labourer wears blue overalls, yellow gloves and keys in his back pocket while the man in a wastecoat and smart trousers and polished slip-on shoes appears to be fast asleep, his fingers across his chest. This scene suggests the social divisions of the working man: Of the young, educated post-war generation whose opportunities have afforded them a faster lifestyle, far removed from that of the physically-demanding job of a man whose life has been spent cleaning and sweeping. English social differences is clearly represented here as the harshness of the manual labourer versus a lazy youth of today, seen in the middle of the modern city.

  • A young trader in currencies leans back in his chair on the currency trading floor of Barclays Bank in the City of London, England, UK. Easing back during the stress of a day when the money markets have been volatile, this young man has the responsibilities of millions of Pounds Sterling to trade and value. He has old technology at his disposal, in the decade when technology made a big impression on the workplace but before the arrival of the internet and e-mail. Communication was therefore slow and unreliable although banks like Barclays who traded money across the world were skilled in migrating information across time-zones.

  • "One candle." A family are gathered to celebrate the first birthday of a young child, the back garden of her parent's south London home. The birthday girl reaches out to touch the single lit candle on a chocolate log cake while her grandmother and mother both show her how to blow and extinguish the flame instead. Friends and relatives are sat around the garden on a perfect late-summer afternoon, drinking and laughing on this joyous occasion, a milestone in the first year of any young life. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • A young man strides past the wall and name of the London Stock Exchange in the City of London. Walking fast past this financial institution, we see the young man's shadow on the wall beneath the name on the exterior wall. Three years after the so-called Big Bang in 1986 , this location at the old Stock Exchange Tower became redundant with the advent of the Big Bang, which deregulated many of the Stock Exchange's activities as it enabled an increased use of computerised systems that allowed dealing rooms to take precedence over face to face trading. Thus, in 2004, the House moved to a brand new headquarters in Paternoster Square, close to St Paul's Cathedral.

It is 1989 and the Walkman is the toy of choice for the urban young - the first portable music device that helped change the way society took their taped music out and about - and years before the Apple iPod. It worked but one had to press the foam pads into the ears to drown out background city noise plus the cassette tape often snagged and twisted, ruining the product.

  • Young Nepali boys admire a young girl on an army walk along Himalayan path during recruitment to the British Gurkha Regiment. This recruitment test for the Gurkha Regiment is part of a tough endurance series to find physically perfect specimens for British army infantry training. For example they will need to perform 25 straight-kneed sit-ups at a 45° slant both within 60 seconds to pass. 60,000 boys aged between 17-22 (or 25 for those educated enough to become clerks or communications specialists) report to designated recruiting stations in the hills each November, most living from altitudes ranging from 4,000-12,000 feet. After initial selection, 7,000 are accepted for further tests from which 700 are sent down here to Pokhara in the shadow of the Himalayas. Only 160 of the best boys succeed in the journey to the UK. The Gurkhas have been supplying youth for the British army since the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

Young girl in the picture and whose nails hold the Comunion portrait is Therese Albrecht from Chicago who was raped as an 8 year-old. Taxpayers footed the £10m bill for non-religious elements, which largely angered a nation still reeling from the financial crisis. Pope Benedict XVI is the head of the biggest Christian denomination in the world, some one billion Roman Catholics, or one in six people. In Britain there are about five million Catholics but only a quarter of Catholics regularly attend Sunday Mass and some churches have closed owing to spending cuts.

  • As his mother washes clothes in a communal spring below, a young boy of about 9 years of age stands on a track in the Himalayan foothills near the town of Gorkha. Here, the British army traditionally recruits young men for the Gurkha regiment (as they have done since 1857). The lad is wearing a yellow hooded sweatshirt and like many in this region - even is sub-zero temperatures - flip-flops. Nepal is one of the world's poorest countries. The prospects for this child may mean they will in future, if the army has no place for him, he may try to seek work in cities like Kathmandu rather than face a lifetime's struggle in local agriculture, as can be seen in the valley below. Their supplies and contact with the outside world comes up from these tracks of boulders and stone along which either men or yaks carry up food for basic survival and luxury goods.

He is alone, a young boy experiencing childhood through the traumas of a violent world Divis Tower was a flashpoint area during the height of the Troubles. 9 year-old Patrick Rooney a child of a similar age to this lad, was the first child killed in the Troubles, was killed in the tower during the Northern Ireland riots of August 1969,

  • Wearing braces, striped shirt and sitting on a block, a young lawyer studies a legal book during a mid-morning break in the Inner Temple in the historic City of London. The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple is one of the four Inns of Court around the Royal Courts of Justice which may call members to the Bar and so entitle them to practise as barristers. The Temple was occupied in the twelfth century by the Knights Templar, who gave the area its name but was heavily bombed during the Blitz of 1940-1 and the reclining marble memorial to predecessor, John Hiccocks who held the office of Master in Chancery between 1702 and 1723 (d 1726) behind the young law student is marked by the partially-demolished Goldsmiths Chambers on the north side of Temple Church where Hiccocks is buried. An assortment of potted red plants add to an otherwise dark courtyard

  • Two young men dressed in office suits casually stuff their lunches during a hot lunchtime break in the Broadgate Estate in the City of London. Both with legs across knees, the lads in their 20s sit on a bench beneath a tree alongside the statue of a traditional gardener, slightly bent and equipped with hoe and wearing a wastecoat, hobnailed boots and flat cap, an iconic salt-of-the-earth workman. This scene suggests the social divisions of the working man: Of the young, educated post-war generation whose opportunities have afforded them a faster lifestyle, far removed from that of the physically-exhausted man whose life has been spent working the honest land. The English social divide is clearly represented here as the harshness of the manual labourer versus the youth of today, seen in the middle of the modern city.

  • In neat diagonal rows, young Nepali boys are crouching on the ground at the British Army's Gurkha base in Pokhara, Nepal where the Britain's Ministry of Defence recruits the best choices to become fully-trained soldiers in the UK's Gurkha Regiment. Some 60,000 young Nepalese boys aged between 17 - 22 (or 25 for those educated enough to become clerks or communications specialists) report to designated recruiting stations in the hills each November, most living from altitudes ranging from 4,000 - 12,000 feet. After initial selection, 7,000 are accepted for further tests from which 700 are sent down here to Pokhara in the shadow of the Himalayas. Only 160 of the best boys succeed in the flight to the UK. The Gurkhas training wing in Nepal has been supplying youth for the British army since the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

  • A young skateboarder leaps into the air beneath the huge memorial to the German Communist leader Ernst Thalmann, the leader of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) during much of the Weimar Republic. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1933 and held in solitary confinement for eleven years, before being shot in Buchenwald on Adolf Hitler's orders in 1944. The Ernst Thälmann Pioneer Organisation, consisting of the Young Pioneers and the Thälmann Pioneers, was a youth scouting-styled organisation of schoolchildren aged 6 to 14, in East Germany. Its motto was" "Für Frieden und Sozialismus seid bereit - Immer bereit" ("For peace and socialism be ready - always ready") but the Pioneers were disbanded in 1989 after early protests here in Leipzig at the same time as the Berlin Wall and the Socialist state's fall.

  • A young boy of about 5 years-old sits in the family back garden in the early 1960s. The small lad sits with an embarrassed expression on his face, a brick wall behind him with summer garden plants growing nearby. The boy has blonde hair and a striped t-shirt and was recorded on a film camera by the boy's father, an amateur photographer in 1964. The picture shows us a memory of nostalgia in an era from the last century.

  • While crowds wave Union Jack flags, a young couple too young to remember a world war comfort themselves wrapped in a large union jack flag, to remember the 50th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day on 6th May 1995. In the week near the anniversary date of May 8, 1945, when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Germany and peace was announced to tumultuous crowds across European cities, the British still go out of their way to honour those sacrificed and the realisation that peace was once again achieved. Street parties now - as they did in 1945 - played a large part in the country's patriotic well-being...
