  • Four water-logged deckchairs have been abandoned on a wet Brighton's East Pier in East Sussex. It is Spring but the rain has driven away holidaymakers from this desolate and depressing spot from England's South coast seaside resort. We see a gloomy, grey sky and empty horizon with neither people, nor water activity but the stripes of the railings are echoed in the reflective wooden planks on this Victorian-era pier and of the fabric on the deckchairs. We wonder who might have sat on these chairs and where they might be now? This landscape might be the antithesis of a holiday poster that repels rather than attracts tourists to this location.

  • Just after heavy rain when the streets of London's West End are wet but brightening after the clouds have passed we look into the windows of a black taxi cab on the busy Charing Cross Road. It is a scene of urban transport and inclement weather. We can see the rough form of the taxi driver at the front of his vehicle but it appears that he is stationary, possibly awaiting for the return of his fare-paying passenger from nearby bookshops such as Foyles in the background. A No-Smoking sticker is on the window and advertising on the side panel shows the arms of an airline passenger sitting in an airliner seat but once the taxi passenger returns, their head will be directly above this. The car's roof is still wet from rain, glistening in the artificial street lights that have turned on during the dark rain storm.

  • A father chases a runaway tyre (tire) along the wet sand before it crashes into the man's young child, otherwise unaware of the impending impact. Waves of the icy North Sea crash onto the seafront and the child is preoccupied with the force of nature and the exhilaration of being outside in the cold. .

  • Londoners from a break from their office jobs, take a walk in the rain at Broadgate in the City of London, the capital's heart of its financial district. The reflection of an 80s steel art instillation and the surrounding corporate development is seen on the ground as we look down from a high vantage point. Coloured umbrellas look all the brighter in the subdued light and wet conditions. The people come and go in their 90s fashion. The art is called Fulcrum (1987) by Richard Serra, a sculpture commissioned for the west entrance to Liverpool Street station in the Broadgate complex.

  • A pilot of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, is about to plunge into the blue Mediterranean waters for his annual Wet Drill exercise during Spring training in Cyprus. There are lines attaching him to a boat ensuring his safety. The rehearsal is to practise a helicopter recovery after a fast-jet ejection over the sea. His RAF-issue life vest (containing a vital life-raft) has inflated when in contact with the salt water and helps him stay afloat in the cold water. This yearly event is required of all flying personnel to ensure that any accident over water can reach a positive outcome - by the rescuing of an expensively-trained pilot or navigator.
