  • An English Electric Lightning supersonic jet fighter aircraft of the Cold War era sits in an industrial wasteland on the side of the A1 motorway in England. Parked in a take-off attitude, the wreck is now covered with graffiti though once the forefront of Britain's nuclear deterrent. The Lightning was noted for its great speed, the only all-British Mach 2 fighter aircraft and was the first aircraft in the world capable of supercruise. The Lightning was renowned for its capabilities as an interceptor; pilots commonly described it as "being saddled to a skyrocket"

  • The still new Canary Wharf tower stands tall in the distance with a foreground of a city in turmoil. A still derelict space occupies the space where large offices will be built in the future. Fences stop trespassers from entering a water-filled hole on wasteland. This docklands development in east London is the product of the 1980s financial boom when during the office of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, huge building projects such as the Docklands consortium saw vast changes in London's landscape. The centrepiece was 1, Canada Square, also known as the Canary Wharf tower.

  • Military jet fighter engines awaiting recycling for scrap value in arid desert at Davis Monthan facility, Tucson, Arizona. A landscape of old technology, the relics of former wars and air supremacy now reduced to aluminium and sprayed IDs. Jet pipes and power plants, the energy to get multi-million aircraft into the air to attack or defend territory and culture. These retired aircraft engines whose air frames are too old for flight are being stored then recycled, their aluminium worth more than their sum total at this repository for old military fighter and bomber aircraft.

  • A Loyalist wall and rubbish-strewn wasteground shows the dereliction of 1990s Belfast, northern Ireland. Here, the fate of the world's retired civil airliners is decided by age or a cooling economy and are either cannibalised for still-working parts or recycled for scrap, their aluminium fuselages worth more than their sum total. After a lifetime of safe commercial flight, wings are clipped and cockpits sliced apart by huge guillotines, cutting through their once-magnificant engineering. • Rubbish and litter blocks the waterways of a canal in east London. Algae and household pollution lies on the surface of the waters dug by navvies of the Victorian era when canals around Britain helped supply the industrial revolution with the raw ingredients to power the furnaces, mills and wharves of the transport age. This is a section of the River Neckinger that once flowed from south London into the Thames at Bermindsey but during the redevelopment of the warves into expensive riverside apartments, the waters were once again freed from 20th century dereliction.

  • Despite a gloriously bright summer afternoon, we see a depressing corner of Southend-on-Sea's Adventure Island. A young couple sits on some white towels in front of a wall that is adorned with graffiti and has its paint rubbed away. It is a scene of squalor and desolation in a town that makes revenue from the day-tripper holiday market. Since Victorian times, many Londoners have traditionally come to this south-east coast on the Thames Estuary, close to the capital. Towns like this have seen a marked decline since the advent of the package tourism in favour of exotic beaches in Spain.

  • Household refuse pollutes a coral beach on Meedu Island, an indigenous community in the Republic of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean. Packaging, foodstuffs and general waste has been tossed away on this otherwise beautiful place, north of the capital Male. Unfortunately, the practice of tossing away one's rubbish is a normal practice in this culture, the local people selfishly unconcerned about the future of their habitat and the health of their community. Only a few miles from Meedu are islands that serve as holiday resorts where families from Europe travel by air for the perffect vacation - unaware that fly-tipping is so widespread that it threatens this nation's worldwide status as a paradise on earth..

  • Graffiti sprayed on a rendered brick wall proclaims that a higher authority 'Can't evict our ideas'. This message of resistance by the underdogs of a moral majority appears on a part of wasteland in the Yorkshire city of Bradford, where the residents of an estate near the city centre have been forcibly removed to make space for a new development. Before their migration, the anonymous, downtrodden people were desperate enough to write this piece of anarchical philosophy that might be seen as a metaphor for a class war against the establishment by The People; the working classes otherwise known in Marxist ideology, as the Proletariat - a kind of thought from the (Orwellian) novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, by George Orwell.

  • As afternoon light fades, we see an incongruous landscape of false forest trees amid an industrial airport lot. A supporting pillar from the hotel chain, Sofitel, a 605 bedroom, 27 suite and 45 meeting room accommodation and business hub, is situated at the Heathrow Airport 's Terminal 5 hotel. The woodland screen is hiding a wasteland of undeveloped land that may soon be another airport hotel but at the moment, it makes for a strange rural/urban scene where the viewer is not sure where reality stops and fiction takes over. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009). .

  • Fake classical Greek statues stand outside a night club in Nafplio, a former Byzantines, Frank, Venetian, and Ottoman coastal Peloponnese port town of 14,000 on the Argolic Gulf. The walls of this modern building seen near wasteland on the outskirts of town are made to look authentic but result in a false tourist style. There are three pieces of fake art that stand on well-watered grass: One of a nude Greek Goddess, a miniature lion in the middle and nearest the viewer is a naked figure of a man - muscular and classically posed as a heroic and mythical figure. Nafplio was also the first capital of independent Greece which was destroyed in the 7th Century for its alliance with Sparta. This contemporary landscape is therefore bears no resemblance to its heritage.
