  • Transport for London's (TFL) new signposts for the new Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) have been erected around the inner orbital road perimeter around the capital, and seen on the South Circular in East Dulwich on the day that the new area becomes effective for newer vehicles, on 25th October 2021, in London, England. Now 18 times larger, the new ULEZ area bans older vehicles such as polluting diesels and petrol cars older than 2006, an attempt to lower poisonous emissions that further harm the health of 1 in 10 children who have asthma. Drivers of non-exempt vehicles may enter the ULEZ after paying a £12.50 daily fee - or face a £160 penalty.

  • A car worker fits engines on the production line in the German BMW-owned Rover factory in Cowley, Solihull, England. New vehicles come off the line at a constant rate for sale in the domestic British and export markets. Motor car production has taken place at Cowley near the city of Oxford, England for over ninety years. The car factory is known today as Plant Oxford and is now owned by BMW and has been extensively redeveloped. It remains the largest industrial employer in Oxfordshire employing more than 4,300 people.

  • The A30 highway runs deep into the South-West of England - from Exeter in the county of Devon to Penzance in the narrow peninsular of Cornwall. On certain dates in the calendar routes like this, near the Cornish town of Bodmin, England, come to a standstill from the huge volume of cars and private vehicles, all heading down to costal resorts and better weather. We see here a huge tailback of traffic that is queueing along one side of the British dual-carriageway (two lanes in each direction) from close-up to the distance down and up a natural hill in this undulating landscape. The cars have edged forward are nose to tail for hours in summer heatwave and tempers fray, children arguing in the back and an otherwise relaxed holiday mood suddenly goes bad.

The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success. ...

  • Near the junction of the 400 to Buckhead, the 401 highway divides and splits during afternoon rush-hour traffic which slows and builds up so that vehicles and cars back-up as they head home and out of Downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The inner median is coned off during some construction work which slows the traffic even more. Crossing the 5-lane road comes a train of Atlanta's own mass-transit system, the MARTA network and it approaches the overpass with care. We see the infrastructure of a modern metropolis at the busiest time of day when the exodus to get home puts the roads and feeder lanes under the most pressure. Fortunately, the weather is fine with good visibility making drivers' journeys a little shorter and more tolerable but it shows too America's habit and dependency on car culture.

  • Months after the fall of the Berlin wall and the collapse of the communist GDR state (the German Democratic Republic), a Trabant is worked on at the company factory, on 15th June 1990, in Berlin, Eastern Germany. The East German auto maker VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke was at Zwickau in Saxony. The Trabant was the most common vehicle in East Germany - Like the Beetle in the West, its Peoples' Car with a 595 cc, two-cylinder air-cooled engine. It had space for four, was compact, light and durable with its distinctive body shape constructed from Duroplast panels attached to a galvanized steel shell. It was in production without any significant changes for about 34 years, becoming a symbol for the cheap, cheerful and polluting possessions for Communist Europeans. When the Berlin Wall eventually fell, Trabants coughed and spluttered onto West German roads for the first time. (Photo by Richard Baker / In Pictures via Getty Images)

Buses, cars and three scooters and riders appear to be stuck in the middle of a motoring nightmare as no-one goes anywhere - the progress of this journey to destinations and life itself, has ground to a halt. A bus passenger looks out resigned through her window, a driver on another vehicle rests his hand on a ledge and the riders are sandwiched between cars. The dot matrix sign on the 60 bus it mentions its own destination, the abbreviation for Piazza spelled as "P.za". The Piazza Venezia takes its name from the adjacent Palazzo Venezia, the former embassy in the city of the Republic of Venice. The piazza is at the foot of the Capitoline Hill and near the Roman Forum.
