  • A woman toutist reads a map of the area, stopped by the side of highway 190 in Death Valley, California. A road sign warns of the bending road that skirts the arid area, dangerous for those caught without transport and water. Death Valley is a desert valley located in Eastern California. Situated within the Mojave Desert, it is the lowest and driest area in North America. Death Valley has the record highest recorded air temperature in the world. The valley received its English name in 1849 during the California Gold Rush and called Death Valley by prospectors.

All fast-jet pilots are required to complete an emergency drill every six months. The pilot is seated in his ejector seat as if in a real jet using back-projected computer graphics representing a generic landscape below. Each aviator proves they can cope with a series of failures that operators select: Engine, hydraulic failure or bird strike. Apart from the aircraft fuselage, the high-tech facility loads malfunctions on a pilot that he could experience in reality. The version of Hawk that the Red Arrows fly is actually a primitive piece of equipment, without computers or fly-by-wire technology.

  • Looking down into a steep-sided valley, Distant streets and working-class terraced homes are beyond smoking chimneys from a Furnacite coking plant at Abercwmboi. Once known as the worst polluter in Britain it was owned by the National Coal Board (NCB) and sold to the Welsh Development Asoociation (WDA) for £1 Pound though arguments are still raging about how to clear it up and cleanup estimates range from £15-£20 million. The pollution had cruel effects on the local population. It made smokeless coal and locals joked that the plant took the smoke out and dumped it on the Cynon Valley but there was concern about toxic waste dumped in the village after the plant's closure and some suffered birth defects. Ironically, the plant was closed because of environmental considerations.

  • In afternoon sunshine, autumn leaves and far away mountains with light cloud on their peaks are viewed from across a clear valley landscape, seen from the roadside near Levidi in Arcadia, between Tripolis and Argos on the Peloponnese region of south-western Greece. At 850m above sea level, pine forests and the slopes of the Mainalo mountains (a mountain range that spans about 15 to 20 from north to south (southwest of Tripolis to NE of Vytina), surrounds the town which lies to the west. The valley contains potato agriculture and mixed farming and extends up to near Kandila. The athlete called Androsthenes was from Maenalus, won gold at the ancient Olympics in 420 and 416 BC.

  • Red identical t-shirts of young Nepali boys walk in single-file through a dry valley near the British Gurkha Regiment's army camp at Pokhara after recently being recruited into the regiment after a gruelling series of tests to eliminate the weaker and less able candidates. 60,000 boys aged between 17-22 (or 25 for those educated enough to become clerks or communications specialists) report to designated recruiting stations in the hills each November, most living from altitudes ranging from 4,000-12,000 feet. After initial selection, 7,000 are accepted for further tests from which 700 are sent down here to Pokhara in the shadow of the Himalayas. Only 160 of the best boys succeed in the journey to the UK. The Gurkhas have been supplying youth for the British army since the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

  • Locals walk over the exposed stone walls of the once-thriving village of Ashopton that now lies at the bottom of Ladybower reservoir, Derbyshire, England. Remains of the village were revealed during the drought of 1989 the levels of water dropped from the country's reservoirs as rainfall failed in the heatwave while demand peaked in the cities such as Sheffield. The villages of Derwent & Ashopton were submerged when the valley was flooded, between 1943 & 1945, amid much controversy. Derwent church tower was left standing at first, but demolished in 1947 for safety reasons. The remains of the buildings are still visible when the water is very low, as it was in 1989.

The light is clear and we can see into the far distance to valleys and hills beyond.

  • A portrait of a teenage boy of about 16 years-old with Welsh mountains and hills in the background in the 1970s. With a rolling valley, a lake, a farmhouse and misty hills in the distance, the landscape is a peaceful scene of an otherwise wild countryside in north Wales. The boy and his family are on a daytrip to the Welsh hills. It was taken on a film camera by the youth's father, an amateur photographer in 1973. The picture shows us a memory of nostalgia in an era from the last century.

  • As his mother washes clothes in a communal spring below, a young boy of about 9 years of age stands on a track in the Himalayan foothills near the town of Gorkha. Here, the British army traditionally recruits young men for the Gurkha regiment (as they have done since 1857). The lad is wearing a yellow hooded sweatshirt and like many in this region - even is sub-zero temperatures - flip-flops. Nepal is one of the world's poorest countries. The prospects for this child may mean they will in future, if the army has no place for him, he may try to seek work in cities like Kathmandu rather than face a lifetime's struggle in local agriculture, as can be seen in the valley below. Their supplies and contact with the outside world comes up from these tracks of boulders and stone along which either men or yaks carry up food for basic survival and luxury goods.
