  • An English caucasian lady smiles at something of interest to the viewer's right. She is a wrinkled female in her sixties, a healthy person with her own original teeth and whose untidy hair is greying and whose skin is slightly tanned under a summer sun. She wears a blue shirt with a wide collar, fashionable in the 1980s (eighties) and has a bemused, attentive expression as if entertained by something of humour out of frame. This is someone's mother and grandmother, at an age when her hard-working life is nearly over and her pension is hopefully covering her everyday needs.

  • Seen low from behind stage, a male voice choir are lined up to sing during their performance at an open-air temporary auditorium during the Lambeth Show, an inner-city cultural and family event held annually in Dulwich Park, a leafy suburb of South London. The choristers are dressed in white shirts which are untidily untucked from their dark trousers (pants). Their heads echo the purple, yellow and red spots from the overhead lights. The front of stage is covered by a curved ribbed roof structure that arches over the mens' heads. The singers look small in scale to the cavernous height of this ceiling, occupying a small percentage of the frame. We cannot see the choir's conductor, nor their audience but we get an impression of wide area in which to project their voices

  • Two young boys concentrate on piling plastic bottle crates on top of each other making towers that echo the tall Canary Wharf tower structure a mile away in the background at Dockland's area of East London. On the grassy bank at Mudchute, a city farm on London's Isle of Dogs, the pile of crates is untidy and unstable making them lean at odd angles making the boys hold on to their building projects. They are dressed for a summer afternoon's activity in a seemingly rural location but which is, in fact, an area of inner-city London.

  • A local woman passes a graffiti-daubed street corner and tourist kiosk near Florence's Piazza Santa Croce. The smartly-dresses young lady walks by the ramshackle shop piled with souvenirs and trinkets, a rather untidy and unsafe-looking electricity junction box and a shop called The Gold Corner selling 18Kt gold. It is a bright morning and the sunshine illuminates the yellow wall that has been covered at ground level by the scrawls of graffiti by local youths - a facet of every corner of the city's medieval architecture.

  • The last moments of street lighting illuminates the pavement and road as dawn breaks over the shoreline on the untidy and empty seafront in Nea Makri, a coastal town near Athens on the Marathon road. This town is the original route that the Athenian messenger Pheidippides ran in 490BC to deliver news of the Greek victory over Persia in the Battle of (Marathonas) Marathon. Nowadays, this is a rather unattractive town with few echoes of Greece's ancient glories although the 29th modern Olympic circus came home in 2004. The modern games share many characteristics with its ancient counterpart. Corruption, politics and cheating interfered then as it does now and the 2004 Athens Olympiad echoed both what was great and horrid about the past.
