  • In late afternoon winter sun, a lady emerges from deep shadow wearing a fur hat on the Kings Road in Chelsea, London, England. Foreign magazines line a rack of an outdoor newsagent and we only see the lady's head in the sunlight. There is a low colour temperature orange glow to the picture and only the lady's face wrapped in a fur hat and the magazine covers can be seen in detail. There are few highlights apart from the magazines in the sun, and more shadow area making this a dark image. The Kings Road has been famous in London since the 60s when fashion and flower power was the label most associated with being young and hip in the Swinging Sixties. It is more sober these days but families and young people tend to be wealthier, white and middle-class than other areas such as Carnaby Street which is seen as seedy and cheap.

  • Half-way across the Gulf of Mexico, between Miami and Cancun in Mexico, Carnival Cruise's Fun Ship Ecstasy's passengers are on the Sun deck to enjoy the first few days sailing on the tropical seas. One of the ship's photographers has passed around a ship's circular life ring buoy through which one busty blonde lady has posed for a photograph and is about to pass it on to her nearest neighbour. She is wearing a garish pink and yellow bikini and is holding the life-saving device so that only her breasts are showing, obscuring her face. We see the name of the ship, Ecstasy, around the ring and the plastic ropes are falling on the lady's cleavage, forming circles around her bosoms. In the background, another cruise traveller (traveler) wears a straw sun hat and is also sitting on a blue sun lounger. We see exposed, tanned skin and it looks baking hot with the tropical sun at its zenith, directly overhead at mid-day. Carnival was a pioneer in the concept of cheaper and shorter cruises. Its ships are known for their Las Vegas decor and entertainment. The line calls its ships The Fun Ships. The MS Ecstasy is a Fantasy class cruise ship featuring two pools, whirlpools, a variety of dining options, nightclubs, a casino, and duty-free shopping. After Hurricane Katrina, she spent six months in New Orleans serving as quarters for refugees and relief workers. She suffered heavy damage in 1998 after the laundry room in the ship's stern caught fire damaging much of her stern and aft section.

  • A British lady applies a layer of sun cream to her hand on a beach in Magaluf. In the foreground, and aligned with the lady's own body is a sun lounger with a beach towel draped over which depicts the torso and legs of a cartoon Hercules Adonis character complete in ancient Greek style with muscular thighs and short skirt. In the background is a hotel building and two other tourists with their tanned backs towards the viewer. Magaluf is a popular holiday resort on the island of Mallorca, one of the Spanish Balearic Islands. A seedy resort very much orientated around British tourists and catering for both young parties as well as families, it is considered as a hot and exotic alternative to the chilly seaside towns around the UK's coast. .

In the context of the News International media scandals of 2011, the (daily) Sun is a sister paper to the now defunct (Sunday) News of The World, closed down by proprietor Rupert Murdoch in the light of public outrage over phone hacking. The Sun's own headline refers to the previous day when Murdoch sat before a Parliamentary Select Committee to answer questions about the nature of phone hacking into private voicemails of victims and their grieving families. Murdoch's overall message was the committee grilling was his most humble day.

  • A lady protects herself from a mid-day summer summer sun with a brightly coloured parasol brolley. Oblivious to the viewer, she balances her lunch snack on her lap with toes pointing inwards, exposed to the hot solar rays. Meanwhile, she holds on tight to her eager pet poodle dog who is straining on its leash, wanting to go for a walk along the largely unpopulated promenade in this Devon resort, otherwise known as the English Riviera. But splashes of white paint (from the painted beach huts) have been left on the pavement. It is a horrible place to sit in the sun and her partner has left her alone to sit on her sun lounger, leaving the second chair vacant.

  • During an August heatwave, the population of Brixton and many others from all over London, bask in the glorious weather at the Brockwell (Brixton) Lido in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, South London. The Lido is a magnet for families, select groups, the young and old and represents an amalgam of humanity who enjoy the benefits of outdoor bathing and the friendship of meeting old friends and new acquaitances. We see two men of Afro-carribean origin who have a corner of the Lido to themselves. One wears a towel wrapped around his lower-body and sits, arms folded with a look of territorial superiority while the other applies sun lotion to his leg. There is little space left on the full pavement which retains its solar heat long after the sun has left the quadrangle of the lido's oblong design but their colourful towels and possessions are spread out on the paving stones along with childrens' toys including an Action Man toy soldier who is also tanning himself. It is a scene of fun for all ages and backgrounds. Brockwell Lido is a large, open air swimming pool in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London. It opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994. Brockwell Lido was designed by HA Rowbotham and TL Smithson of the London County Council's Parks Department to replace Brockwell Park bathing pond. It is now a Grade II listed building

  • Spiritual revellers celebrate the summer Solstice (mid-summer and longest day) at the ancient stones of Stonehenge, on 21st June 2017, in Wiltshire, England. Fifteen thousand attended the 2017 Solstice at Stonehenge, according to English Heritage. Pagans say the ancient monument is a sacred place that links the Earth, Moon, Sun and the seasons. Built in three phases between 3,000 B.C. and 1,600 B.C. its purpose remains under study. However, it’s known that if you stand in just the right place inside the monument on summer solstice, through the entrance towards a rough hewn stone outside the circle you will see the sun rise above the Heel Stone.

  • A smart elderly lady walks into a late sun on a chilly afternoon on the Kings Road, Chelsea, London, England. Striding past the viewer she has a determined look on her face, a purpose for reaching her destination without delay and oblivious to other influences. Other shoppers are walking in her directionand their faces are also lit by the sunshine but in the background they are less prominant than the woman in the foreground. With so little highlights, this image is full of low-key shadow making it dark and gloomy. Kings Road Chelsea is a chic street that found modern fame during the Sixties when pretty young things paraded their new-found fashion clothing.

  • As an early sun rises, the twin stacks of Richborough cooling Towers make silhouettes against the golden morning light. Now decommissioned, these industrial giants of the landscape are sending clouds of steam vapour into the air, in the county of Kent. Nature can be seen competing with 20th Century technology as solar energy is seen against the war power being generated. From 1962-1971 Richborough burned coal from collieries. In 1971 the station was converted to burn oil. Too costly to run plant underwent trials on an experimental fuel called Orimulsion, a cheap heavy oil and water-based emulsion produced form natural bitumen from Venezuela. Initial results or trials suggested it would make a cheap clean fuel alternative to oil but high sulphur emissions from the plant caused nearby Acid Rain and after local protest, the site has since been derelict.

  • The sun rises on a red sky in London's Docklands during a period of regeneration. The solar power gathers in strength and intensity as it climbs from below the horizon and behind buildings, its circular disc a flaming yellow which is soon to turn a deeper hue over the capital's red skies. A crane from a nearby construction project tells about the regeneration of London's East End during the early 1990s when the Thatcherite heyday in house and office building accelerated the demand for homes and headquarters during the economic boom.

Comically they also wear wide sombrero hats bought in Cancun during their vacation around the Gulf of Mexico, the destination of this popular cruise line whose base is Miami. Stitched with garish colours the souvenirs provide shelter from the overhead tropical sun though the woman of this couple chooses to hang hers over a shoulder and keeps her original hat on her head. This may be the couples' honeymoon or just a special annual holiday away from the kids or a humdrum lifestyle where the weather is far from the intensity of Florida, a favourite resort for Americans not liking foreign travel.

  • We are looking down from above to office and business workers who are lying down and relaxing in the grass in their lunch break at Finsbury Circus, a circular green park space in the heart of London's financial district, the City of London. Surrounding them is an art instillation of steel sheep that are incongruously grazing among the assorted people, much like they once did when London was a home to livestock en-route to market and other animals used for transport. It is a warm afternoon and in the foreground, a man wearing a dark suit has taken off his polished shoes and is lying his head on his jacket in the warm afternoon, loosening his tight tie and stretching his neck. Elsewhere, a lady is sitting eating a packed lunch with the Sun newspaper and a man a little further behind is in jeans and plimsoll shoes. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

The young male in the middle is the one rowing and he pulls on one oar to steer around an unseen obstacle in the absolutely calm, clear blue waters of this majestic river whose source rises in deepest Gloucestershire to its industrial estuary in the English Channel 215 miles (346 km) away. But here in Oxfordshire, we see an idyllic scene of adventure and peace on calm rural waters in a beautiful and tranquil setting, on an English midsummer day. • Soon after setting sail from Miami, en-route to Cancun in Mexico, passengers of Carnival Cruise's Fun Ship Ecstasy liner are told to report on the top sun deck for the obligatory safety drill. Told to fetch their life vests from their respective cabins and suites, they have gathered at various muster points around the vessel to hear the crews' instructions about abandoning ship or the precuations needed to enter the water. We look down from a higher deck to see several dozen tourists on red vests, milling around awaiting the signal to return to their previous activities and entertainment. Operators like US-owned Carnival take these drills very seriously. Carnival was a pioneer in the concept of cheaper and shorter cruises. Its ships are known for their Las Vegas decor and entertainment. The cruise line calls its ships The Fun Ships and the MS Ecstasy is a Fantasy class cruise ship featuring two pools, whirlpools, a variety of dining options, nightclubs, a casino, and duty-free shopping.
