  • A schoolboy of Afro-Caribbean descent stands looking confused on a platform at Victoria mainline station in central London. The young lad looks smart in a new school uniform of cap, blazer, long trousers and polished black shoes. We might guess that it is the start of a new academic year and that he is about to attend a new school for which he needs to take a train on his own. His mother and younger and older sister are also to the far right of the picture so he may go with his elder sibling carrying a multi-coloured umbrella and a bright blue briefcase containing his lunch and a few items needed for lessons. Surrounded by adult commuters, some of who look on with mild amusement, also make await their train from the city out of town. Mostly, people mind their own business and what is a special day for the boy will become a much-travelled route.

  • On the day that Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre closes before its demolition and redevelopment, south Londoners pass the iconic Elephant symbol is outside the mall before doors are locked for the final time after 55 years, on 24th September 2020, in south London, England. The much-criticised architecture of the Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre was opened in 1965, built on the bomb damaged site of the former Elephant & Castle Estate, originally constructed in 1898. The centre was home to restaurants, clothing retailers, fast food businesses and clubs where south Londoners socialised and met lifelong partners.

  • While seated to have dinner at home, a young boy of about 10 years of age hides his face and wipes his lips with a serviette. Demonstrating perfect manners that his parents must have instilled in him, the lad's face is hidden from the viewer as he presses the cloth to his face to obscure his identity. He is eating some sort of pudding with a spoon and a fork rests on the highly-polished table on which an ornamental posy of flowers is reflected. It is a scene of immaculate etiquette that a boy from a middle-class background might be expected to show to elders and visitors. It is an example of grooming and pedigree to take with him out into the outside world where he will be expected to be the best behaved.

  • A group of schoolboys from the City of London school in central London, visit a financial institution as part of their education course work. Wearing the jackets and trousers with the dark colours of their college, the boys look to be in high-spirits as they walk along a street in the capital. Looking upwards to where the tall banks and insurance institutions may tempt them to seek careers in the Square Mile - London's oldest quarter and financial district. The City of London School (CLS) or City is a boys' independent day school on the banks of the River Thames in the City of London, England founded by a private Act of Parliament in 1834, following events starting from a bequest of land by John Carpenter, Town Clerk of London in 1442, for four poor children in the City of London.

  • A class of schoolboys accompanied by their teachers play on the shingle at the water's edge in the south coast seaside town of Brighton. The East Pier is resplendent with amusement rides and attractions that populate its long structure, jutting out into the calm English Channel beyond which is the French coast further south. The children are still in their school shirts, shorts and ties but have taken off their shoes and socks to frolic and enjoy some precious fresh-air and the freedom that childhood brings. According to British legal requirements, schoolchildren on away day visits must have accompanying adults with a ratio of 1:xx though it appears this group's quota is less with two teachers per 28 boys.

  • Looking down from a high vantage point, we see boy pupils seated as they gather in front of the Headmaster during morning assembly at the City of London School for boys in central London. Individual faces in neat rows stretch into the distance as we look past the Headmaster who is addressing, facing his students. Some seem serious, a few are looking bored while one boy can be seen coughing into his hand and another looking away with a smirk. We can see a diverse range of ethnic backgrounds, skin colours and hairstyles. The City of London School (CLS) is a boys' public school on the banks of the River Thames. It traces its origins to a bequest of land by John Carpenter, town clerk of London in 1442. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

  • A memorial has been placed where a young Spanish schoolboy boy called 'Diego' died at Seven Dials, Covent Garden, London, England, UK. If we drove past this place where someone's life ended, the victim would just be an anonymous statistic but flowers are left to die too and touching poems and dedications are written by family and loved-ones. One reads: "?Diego our friend, we are sorry you had to die like this.? ?School will never be the same without you.? From a project about makeshift shrines: ?Britons have long installed memorials in the landscape: Statues and monuments to war heroes, Princesses and the socially privileged. But nowadays we lay wreaths to those who die suddenly - ordinary folk killed as pedestrians, as drivers or by alcohol, all celebrated on our roadsides and in cities with simple, haunting roadside remberences.
