  • A Parachute Regiment recruit is in mid-flight and leaps across a wide space between scaffolding and a rope net during the 14-week long Pegasus (P) Company selection programme. Seen in silhouette, the man is in full stretch, half-way between the gantry he leapt from and the rope net that he is about to meet. It is an image that describes a mid-point, a half-way position between safety and uncertainty. Known as the Trainasium, it is an 'Aerial Confidence Course' which is unique to P Company. In order to assess his suitability for military parachuting, the Trainasium tests a candiates ability to overcome fear and carry out simple activities and instructions at a height above ground level. Recruits wanting to join the British Army's Parachute Regiment held regularly at Catterick army barracks, Yorkshire, need to pass this and other tests before earning the right to wear the esteemed maroon beret.

It was founded by the 5th Duke of Argyll to provide an income for himself and his tenants through fishing. Originally cottages with thatched roofs did not have gable ends or chimneys but this one has one gable and with a chimney attached. http://www.ambaile.org.uk/en/item/item_photograph.jsp?item_id=22178

  • Reaching out to a tower of scaffolding, high above the skyline of North London, a member of a company of abseiling construction scaffold workers make use of circus skills. Suspended with ropes, carabinas and a seat harness normally used by mountaineers, this man is wearing a safety helmet and blue overalls and his dirty gloved hand is about to make contact with yellow iron work as his colleague looks skyward, already tethered to the reinforced structure. A 60s tower block is immediately behind and suburban houses and streets are below. We see a man about to make contact with a place of safety, reaching out to his destination while spread across London's skies. Lit by flash, this picture is confusing because the viewer sees a false sense of size and scale between the iron work and the flats behind.

  • Half-way across the Gulf of Mexico, between Miami and Cancun in Mexico, Carnival Cruise's Fun Ship Ecstasy's passengers are on the Sun deck to enjoy the first few days sailing on the tropical seas. One of the ship's photographers has passed around a ship's circular life ring buoy through which one busty blonde lady has posed for a photograph and is about to pass it on to her nearest neighbour. She is wearing a garish pink and yellow bikini and is holding the life-saving device so that only her breasts are showing, obscuring her face. We see the name of the ship, Ecstasy, around the ring and the plastic ropes are falling on the lady's cleavage, forming circles around her bosoms. In the background, another cruise traveller (traveler) wears a straw sun hat and is also sitting on a blue sun lounger. We see exposed, tanned skin and it looks baking hot with the tropical sun at its zenith, directly overhead at mid-day. Carnival was a pioneer in the concept of cheaper and shorter cruises. Its ships are known for their Las Vegas decor and entertainment. The line calls its ships The Fun Ships. The MS Ecstasy is a Fantasy class cruise ship featuring two pools, whirlpools, a variety of dining options, nightclubs, a casino, and duty-free shopping. After Hurricane Katrina, she spent six months in New Orleans serving as quarters for refugees and relief workers. She suffered heavy damage in 1998 after the laundry room in the ship's stern caught fire damaging much of her stern and aft section.

  • Soon after setting sail from Miami, en-route to Cancun in Mexico, passengers of Carnival Cruise's Fun Ship Ecstasy liner are told to report on the top sun deck for the obligatory safety drill. Told to fetch their life vests from their respective cabins and suites, they have gathered at various muster points around the vessel to hear the crews' instructions about abandoning ship or the precuations needed to enter the water. We look down from a higher deck to see several dozen tourists on red vests, milling around awaiting the signal to return to their previous activities and entertainment. Operators like US-owned Carnival take these drills very seriously. Carnival was a pioneer in the concept of cheaper and shorter cruises. Its ships are known for their Las Vegas decor and entertainment. The boat is rusty, having seen many miles on inland seas around the western isles, the edge of the Atlantic, dependent of fisheries policy and EU quotas that dictate how much they're allowed to catch per day/per week.

  • A pile of assorted ropes and fibrous cord and fishing pots await removal from the coastal landscape, having been collected by volunteers from a beach on Holy Island, on 27th September 2017, on Lindisfarne Island, Northumberland, England. The amount of rubbish found dumped on UK beaches rose by a third last year, according to a new report. More than 8,000 plastic bottles were collected by the Marine Conservation Society’s annual beach clean-up at seaside locations from Orkney to the Channel Islands on one weekend in September 2016. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, also known simply as Holy Island, is an island off the northeast coast of England. Holy Island has a recorded history from the 6th century AD; it was an important centre of Celtic and Anglo-saxon Christianity. After the Viking invasions and the Norman conquest of England, a priory was reestablished.

  • A woman rock climber hangs on to a small piece of rock and is suspended by ropes. .The Great Orme (Welsh: Y Gogarth or Pen y Gogarth) is a prominent limestone headland on the north coast of Wales situated in Llandudno. It is referred to as Cyngreawdr Fynydd in a poem by the 12th century poet Gwalchmai ap Meilyr. It is echoed by the Little Orme, a smaller but very similar limestone headland, which is on the other side of Llandudno Bay in the parish of Llanrhos. The geology of the Great Orme is limestone and the surface is particularly noted for the limestone pavements covering several headland areas. There are also rich seams of Dolomite-hosted copper ore.

  • An eleven year-old girl swings with head thrown backwards in a field in Herefordshire, England. It is an image of care-free youth, of a free-spirit and without a care in the world. The young lady gazes skyward as the swing takes her on an upward trajectory, the sun sinking behind distant trees, a scene of splendid inner-peace and tranquillity, disturbed only by the creaking of the rope on the tree above that supports her as she rides. She is staying at this small camp site where tipis and yurts is the theme of this eco-friendly and carbon-neutral holiday.

  • A life belt hangs on a cross-shaped post, all painted a vivid red as the sun sinks down below the horizon and beyond the historic Bamburgh Castle, in Northumberland, northern England. Lit with a strong off-camera flash we see the slightly blurred device, invented for saving lives at sea, with a ghostly corona around its form, against a fading blue sky. The rope dangles near the ground, around which the grasses of the dunes blow in a faint breeze. Only the foreground is lit by the flash and the distant castle building and shoreline. We see such equipment and imagine safety and rescue and also jeopardy and hazards at sea. Supplied for those taking risks and making stupid decisions makes these items essential on coastal areas.
