  • A detail of the ornate sign hanging outside the Sailor's Reading Room on East Cliff, Southwold, Suffolk. Topless mermaids and a shell form part of the sign on a red brick wall of this Grade II listed Sailors' Reading Room, which still provides daily papers and a place to read them. Built in 1864 in memory of Captain Charles Rayley RN, a naval officer at the time of Trafalgar, the Reading Room was a refuge for fishermen and sailors. It provided a place to meet and receive religious instruction, away from the pubs, and somewhere to read things that were good for the soul. Displays of a seafaring nature line the walls and fill glass cabinets. Pictures and portraits of local fishermen and seascapes, model ships and maritime paraphernalia offer a fascinating history of Southwold's connections with the sea.

  • After an internal meeting, a male employee is ready to leave a small conference room at the British Airways' corporate headquarters at Waterside at Harmondsworth near Heathrow Airport. Themed rooms like this are titled after BA's destinations - in this case, the southern French Cote d'Azur town of Nice. The man is reaching out to shake a colleague's hand before they all exit and re-convene elsewhere. Focus is on the room's name and not on the man, who remains anonymous. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009). .

  • The long meeting table in the Locarno Room at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), on 17th September 2017, in Whitehall, London, England. In 1925 the Foreign Office played host to the signing of the Locarno Treaties, aimed at reducing tension in Europe. The ceremony took place in a suite of rooms that had been designed for banqueting, which subsequently became known as the Locarno Suite. During the Second World War, the Locarno Suite's fine furnishings were removed or covered up, and it became home to a foreign office code-breaking department.

  • Crew room classroom of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team at their RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire headquarters. Using two scaled model Hawk jet aircraft he shows how their formation is to be flown on their next training flight. Five autumn and winter months are spent teaching new recruits manual aerobatic display flying while the older members (who rotate positions) learn new disciplines within the routine. Their leaning curve is steep, even for these accomplished fast-jet aviators who had already accumulated 1,500 hours in fighters. By Summer they need every aspect of their 25-minute displays honed to perfection. In this meeting room they meet before and after every flight discussing safety, merits and failures.

  • A woman in her late 20s crouches down to paint the bare wood of a window frame in a Victorian terraced home. Wearing blue work overalls and brandishing a narrow width paint brush with white wood primer on its hairs, the lady works away in a rear room of this house that overlooks similar aged properties in south London, England. The sash-style window is up and open so that fresh air helps dry this coat of paint. Furniture has been cleared from the room - a back of the house upstairs bathroom.

  • Deep below-decks, we see the highly-classified Conflict Direction Center or War Room on the US Navy aircraft carrier USS Harry S Truman during its deployment patrol of the no-fly zone at an unknown location in the Persian Gulf. This top secret office is used for planning and executing sophisticated tactical electronic warfare that fighter jets and surveillance aircraft engage in from air operations mounted from the carrier. The Truman is the largest and newest of the US Navy's fleet of new generation carriers, a 97,000 ton floating city with a crew of 5,137, 650 are women. The Iraqi no-fly zones (NFZs) were proclaimed by the United States, United Kingdom and France after the Gulf War of 1991 to protect humanitarian operations in northern Iraq and Shiite Muslims in the south.

  • Awaiting the visit from his local country doctor to pay him a visit to his remote French farmhouse, an elderly gentleman sits alone in his favourite armchair. Uncertain what the future may hold, the man is old and frail and he looks down to the floor of this front room with worry across his face. He is suffering from cancer and may not live long but the presence of another human being, especially a doctor, is a small comfort from. Someone to share his concerns with and to seek advice from this terminal condition. It is a bright summer morning but even with the sun, it's a gloomy part of the house in which he lives alone.

  • Deep below-decks, we peer through a striped window of the highly-classified Conflict Direction Center or War Room on the aircraft carrier US Navy USS Harry S Truman during its deployment patrol of the no-flyzone in the Persian Gulf, near the Kuwaiti coast. Iraqi aircraft were forbidden from flying inside the zones. The policy was enforced by US, UK and French aircraft patrols until France withdrew in 1998. .
