  • An elderly retired couple dance on the wide but darkly lit dance floor at Blackpool Tower Ballroom, England. They are the only dancers in the empty dance space, except for the Wurlitzer organist who is playing his accompanying music at the front of the stage, in a pool of bright light. We are looking down from a balcony high above and the husband and wife are pausing during their dance routine, stopping just long enough to register as sharp figures in the picture. The light is orange and red because of the tungsten light source. The Ballroom is the traditional home of the mighty Wurlitzer Organ and complemented by the 3 Deck Wersi - the world's most advanced organ. The Wersi is a state-of-the-art Louvre organ which is played by the resident organists in this magnificent setting. The present interior of the Blackpool Tower circus was created by the famous theatre designer, Frank Matcham and completed in 1900.

  • In mid-day heat of the arid Sonoran desert sit the remains of a Boeing 747 airliner at the storage facility at Mojave, California. Here, the fate of the world's retired civil airliners is decided by age or a cooling economy and are either cannibalised for still-working parts or recycled for scrap, their aluminium fuselages worth more than their sum total. After a lifetime of safe commercial flight, wings are clipped and cockpits sliced apart by huge guillotines, cutting through their once-magnificant engineering. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903. .

  • Standing near Hougemont Farm, Waterloo, Belgium, scene of some of the fiercest fighting on the battlefield on the day in 1815 when French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated by the (Iron) Duke of Wellington, we see the current Duke, Brigadier Arthur Valerian Wellesley, 8th Duke of Wellington, KG, LVO, OBE, MC, DL, FKC (born in Rome on 2nd July 1915). He is a British hereditory peer and a retired officer in the British Army. When he succeeded his father as Duke, he was known as Marquess Douro but is now styled His Grace The Duke of Wellington. Making an occasional visit to the battlefields, he stands on a raw winter's day on the very landscape where his ancestor's brave British men fought off a fierce French attack, the Duke gazes out over the rolling hills that proved the undoing of Napoleon and which changed the course of European history.

  • Seen from the air at dawn, dozens of F-4 Phantom fighters from the Cold War-era are laid out in grids across the arid desert at Davis-Monthan Air Forbe Base near Tucson Arizona. These retired aircraft whose air frames are too old for flight are being stored then recycled, their aluminium worth more than their sum total at this repository for old military fighter and bomber aircraft. They sit in neat rows in low light, their shadowy wings are blue in colour but their fuselage are stripped of markings, being taped up against the dust. This is a scene of once-great flying machines relegated to sad scrap, long-after the Soviet Union's own demise when western armies fought a war of propaganda. .

He is a very active gardener, the nurturing of plants and flowers being his passion now that he is of retirement age after a lifetime of work. Now he enjoys the rewards of his labours from mother earth in this lush plot of his that looks every bit the perfect English cottage garden despite it being in an urban inner-city.

  • A businessman dozes in autumn sunshine with an elderly couple in Bank triangle in the City of London. A scene of both the pressures of a modern job in a capital city and also the years of leisure after a lifetime's career, after which a pension secures a healthy future, we see two generations - of the modern work era alongside retirement.

Today it trains future officers for the demands of leadership and military understanding of military understanding,. Students are tested for their command instincts, intellect, strength of character and physical endurance often under great psychological pressure - the demands asked of them in modern warfare. Failure in this test might not necessarily mean dismissal though perserverence or refusal to give up won't harm their prospects.

  • In the privacy of her own country home, an elderly French lady is about to have eye-drops administered by her local doctor in the Vosges town of Ban de Laveline. Holding her eyelids up with a thumb in preparation of giving the woman the necessary medicine, the young health professional reaches for his equipment and the lady is left looking rather startled and uncomfortable for a few moments as her eye stares wildly. We are in her small cottage on the outskirts of town and the doctor is making his rounds to various patients unable to attend his daily surgery. The lady wears a colourful apron, typical of French working people, and is possibly in her seventies, living alone with only kind neighbours to ensure her safety. ....http://www.france-voyage.com/en/

  • In a field at the town of Boofzheim in the eastern French Alsace region, an elderly Frenchman harvests some of his self-grown carrots crop. Having left his old bicycle standing at the kerb of a narrow access road and in front of a field full of maturing maize, he bends down with much effort to dig in his fork or spade into the rich Alsace earth and lift out his vegetables to take home. This landscape is typically French or German (Alsace borders the western side of Germany and saw much tragic action in WW2) where maize is a nutritious foodstuff for cattle and also for ducks and geese who are force-fed it locally in the making of fois gras and pate.

  • A husband and wife make their way along a pavement towards the entrance of the Ascot racecourse where the annual Ladies' Day event is held as part of the English social season calendar. Leading the way and carrying two walking sticks and in a polythene bag, his best jacket for the dress-code is important if one is allowed access to the private enclosures. He wears a top hat and waste coat as he hobbles along with wife in tow. She is behind him rummaging through her handbag perhaps looking for tickets or cash. Royal Ascot is held every June and is one of the main dates on the sporting calendar and social season.

  • An elderly lady makes her way from her community village Memorial Hall which she has been volunteering this winter morning as part of a charity funds raising event. The lady might be old and frail but her spirit is such that she still finds the time to integrate into community life and remains active despite her years. Walking beneath the wrought-iron sign in Cleeve Prior, Worcestershire, she edges under tentatively to make her way home wearing a quilted coat and her wedding ring on her gnarled hands. A chilly late-morning sun shines across the architecture of the building and this is the look of a lady happy with her morning's activities with fellow parishioners.

  • Awaiting the visit from his local country doctor to pay him a visit to his remote French farmhouse, an elderly gentleman sits alone in his favourite armchair. Uncertain what the future may hold, the man is old and frail and he looks down to the floor of this front room with worry across his face. He is suffering from cancer and may not live long but the presence of another human being, especially a doctor, is a small comfort from. Someone to share his concerns with and to seek advice from this terminal condition. It is a bright summer morning but even with the sun, it's a gloomy part of the house in which he lives alone.

  • Making their way across a snow-swept road in Norwood, south London, an elderly couple tread warily as the snow turns to slush. It's a bleak, raw morning as the new snowfall has settled on this suburban street where cars are parked on icy kerbs. Wearing sensible hats and coats and non-slip boots the pensioners are vulnerable to icy black spots which may endanger their stability because old people are susceptible to falls and injury at these hazardous times. A very monochrome landscape, we see little colour. Instead it is a scene of jeopardy and of an uncaring society for its older generations.

  • Good-looking trendy young people spill out of a pub one sunny afternoon in fashionable Notting Hill in West London. Their confidence and sense of fun and living for the moment is seen in their clothes and style. But out-of-sight around the corner on this street stands a rather nervous-looking poor woman, an elderly lady perhaps in her sixties who is holding some shopping bags with her coat buttoned up, despite being warm outside. Her demeanour is that of tiredness and hardship - the opposite of the young generation. There is a wide generation gap here: The division of wealth, health and outlook between these two demographic groups which also symbolises a modern Britain, used to the class system that is alive and well.

  • Ninety year-old Mrs Irene Spurling sits with fingers crossed looking to camera with a mild look of mild bemusement. She is actually familiar with celebrity, having been the secretary to the Australian operatic singer Dame Nellie Melba between 1919-1921. She travelled with the diva in the latter years of her singing career, and in 1993 lived in a nursing home in Winchester, Hampshire England. Irene has clear blue eyes, brushed silver hair and seemingly gnarled, arthritic hands and still wears her wedding ring. Despite her years, she is still active and interested in her surroundings.

  • A rather rotund man wearing a flat cap, a checked shirt under braces that keep his ample trousers up above his fat tummy, affectionately tickled his pet dog, a Whippet ,who stands still with two paws on his master's large leg. It is a bright day on the beach at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England. Bathers are running on the sand in the background and the man and his dog are content to watch the world go by from their promenade bench. Their is a great deal of trust and love these two have for each other - the gentleman having brought his dog on holiday to the seaside with him, rather than leave him with friends or in kennels. The dog is healthy, lithe and obviously has great speed in those muscular legs, vastly different to the man, whose frame is heavy and slow.

  • A middle-aged man, possibly in his late-fifties, holds the lead of his pet dog on a park bench in London England. Afternoon sun filters through nearby trees and the man is wearing a simple, plain white shirt. He sits crossed-legs on this warm afternoon gazing to a point in the distance looking lonely and hopeful of meeting someone else, or maybe of events in a long life. His dog is the man's best friend and companion and he guards him with a strong hand as a master should.
