Vast sheets of window glass lets in natural daylight in this tranquil area where travellers can remain largely undisturbed from the otherwise hectic airport terminal created by the Richard Rogers Partnership (now Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners). This is Lombard Street, originally a piece of land granted by King Edward I to goldsmiths from the part of northern Italy known as Lombardy (larger than the modern region of Lombardy). It is a narrow and usually dark sidestreet near the Bank of England in the heart of what is called the Square Mile - the inner-part and oldest quarter of London occupied first by the Romans 2,000 years ago. Nowadays the City of London is home to banks and financial institutions but also with a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000.

A red double-decker Routemaster bus has stopped in a queue of traffic opposite with an advert for London buses saying 'We've got to get this city to work' but with tattoos on his arms and his forehead and wearing heavy army-style boots, he is clearly not on his way to a job and therefore out-of-place in this busy part of London. With arms folded and head resting on an unseasonal coat, the man is asleep and going nowhere.

The young men have lodged themselves awkwardly a metre above the ground, resting their feet on various door catches and ledges, as if floating in mid-air. On a street traffic sign the French words 'Defense de Stationner' are written which in English translates as 'No Stopping', referring to vehicles not pedestrians. There is graffiti tagging sprayed on the walls and a brown stain at the bottom of a drainpipe

London 2012 volunteers are called 'Games Makers', as they are helping to make the Games happen. Up to 70,000 Games Makers take on a wide variety of roles across the venues: from welcoming visitors; to transporting athletes; to helping out behind the scenes in the Technology team to make sure the results get displayed as quickly and accurately as possible. Games Makers come from a diverse range of communities and backgrounds, from across the UK and abroad. The vast majority are giving up at least 10 days to volunteer during the Games.

Jet lag, medically referred to as desynchronosis, is a physiological condition which results from alterations to the body's circadian rhythms resulting from rapid long-distance transmeridian (east–west or west–east) travel on a (typically jet) aircraft. It was previously classified as one of the circadian rhythm sleep disorders.
