Christian worship has probably been offered at the church of St. Botolph's without Bishopsgate since Roman times. The original Saxon church, the foundations of which were discovered when the present church was erected, is first mentioned as 'Sancti Botolfi Extra Bishopesgate' in 1212.St. Botolph without Bishopsgate may have survived the Great Fire of London unscathed, and only lost one window in the Second World War, but on 24 April 1993 was one of the many buildings to be damaged by an IRA bomb. The memorial cross (1916) at the garden’s entrance is believed to be the first memorial of the Great War to be set up in England.

  • Standing late at night in the doorway of a Soho nightclub in Old Compton Street, London England, a bouncer provides security for his employer. Otherwise known as doormen or door supervisers, these usually hardened men offer a deterrent for anyone causing trouble inside ot out of licensed bars and clubs such as this. Lit from overhead spotlights, he looks menacing and capable of street violence - enough to urge troublemakers to move on quick. reflected in the glass is Ed's Diner a well-known eaterie in this street. Soho is known as a rather seedy but vibrant area of London's West End and late-night social disorder fuelled by excessive alcohol is pretty much normal.

  • Filled with suits, jackets, trousers, and overcoats, the choices of mens' office worker clothes fill a shop front window belonging to Mr Byrite, a high-street clothes store chain in London England UK. Bargain sale prices for the items of clothing are all over the window display, offering discounts for £30, £40 or £60 and the mannequins used to wear these clothes either have bald-headed representations of men, or faceless white models wearing sun glasses. There is a sale of cheap items attracting young city men, far from traditional work attire, and more fashionable for the day.

  • Reflections of Tudor royalty including King Henry the VIII and Jane Seymour appear as ghostly apparitions on a street corner in London's Mayfair. An art gallery exhibition of Tudor portraits, includes a striking picture of an unknown child seen far right who appears to be crossing a zebra-crossing. It looks like a girl but is in fact a young boy of about nine years of age, confusing our perception of gender in the middle-ages. Also, a white traffic direction arrow points around the road's corner as if indicating the location of Queen Jane. They all float just above ground level maiking an eerie and mystical image.

  • A shop window in Camden north London proclaims in red stencilled letters the business is open seven days a week when the store has gone out of business and the words No Hope have been added after the pane of glass has been white-washed. Stickers have been applied and torn off again. It is a graphic picture of irony and delusion, a misguided shop owner who thought his company was successful when it was heading for closure.

  • Seen through a junk shop window in north London, the large letters Last Day have been painted in white emulsion paint on the pane of glass. Between the letters are figures and bric-a-brac on sale in this budget store. A tiger model; a Jesus figure; a doll in a green dress. 'Last Day' is also ironic in a Biblical context as it was taken a few days after the Day of Resurrection and Easter.

  • Office lights illuminate the 800 foot tower at 1 Canada Square, Canary Wharf in London Docklands, one of the tallest buildings in Europe. Designed by the Argentine architect César Pelli, construction was completed in 1991. Identifiable from a great distance as an obelisk-shaped tower with its aircraft warning light flashing on top, this building is a monument to 1980s-style capitalism...From the 'Windows' series. ..Since Microsoft brought about the name Windows to brand the PC computing user interface, I have taken it upon myself to collect and henceforth, add to - a group of pictures about the original window, long after the original word was hijacked by a man called Gates. More will be added during 2007...Windows have been around for a long time - the Romans invaders even had a glass substance that sealed the chilly British air - and stench - from their sensitive Roman noses. ..Nowadays, I'm attracted to the labelling and messaging that becomes attached to the inside or outside of panes of glass, as if they are urban, public post-it notes for anything an individual wishes to share or advertise. Sometimes the message can be a warning, a cry for help or just an accidental freak of mis-spelling that somehow creates a different meaning altogether to that intended. ..
