London Rail is a directorate of Transport for London (TFL), involved in the relationship with the National Rail network within London, UK. It manages non-tube rail systems in London. Railways started to change the landscape of London itself, followed by its suburbs in the mid to late 19th century when streets and neighbourhoods were cut in half by the new infrastructure.

  • The rack and pinion narrow guage mountain railway nearing the summit of Mount Snowdon, the highest point in England, on 14th June 1992, in Llanberis, Wales, UK. The rack and pinion system used is that patented by the Swiss engineer Dr Roman Abt. The railway uses double rack rails, fastened to steel sleepers between the running rails. Each locomotive is equipped with toothed pinions (cogwheels), which engage the rack and provide all the traction necessary to scale the steepest inclines. On the way down, the rack and pinion system also acts as a brake.

  • A Post Office employee hauls a cart full of post onto the station platform on the Mail Rail system. The Post Office Railway, also known as Mail Rail, was a narrow-gauge driverless underground railway in London, built by the Post Office with assistance from the Underground Electric Railways Company of London, to move mail between sorting offices. Inspired by the Chicago Tunnel Company it operated from 3 December 1927 until 31 May 2003. It ran east-west from Paddington Head District Sorting Office in the west to the Eastern Office at Whitechapel in the east, a distance of 6.5 miles (10.5 km). It had eight stations, the largest of which was underneath Mount Pleasant, but by 2003 only three stations remained in use because the sorting offices above the other stations had been relocated.

OBB, the Austrian Federal Railways operate a network of 5,683 km makes them the by far largest railway-company in this country. Heavy snow has fallen in this region of the Alps and deposits have settled on the fences and the glowing red stop traffic light, signalling for motorists to halt at this dangerous road-crossing location. So fast is this mode of transport, it blurs past this cold, desolate spot where only one nearby house is next to the trackside.   • Beneath Azulejo tiles, travellers and commuters walk through the concourse of Sao Bento railway station, on 20th July, in Porto, Portugal. The name of the station derives from a Benedictine monastery built on this spot in the 16th century. The monastery fell victim of a fire in 1783, was later rebuilt, but was in a grave state of disrepair at the end of the 19th century. The most notable aspect of Sao Bento Station is the tile panels in the vestibule. There are some 20 thousand and date from 1905–1916, the work of Jorge Colaço, the most important azulejo painter of the time. The first tiles were put up on 13 August 1905.
