  • A holy Sadhu man attracts a crowd on the Maidan in central Calcutta, India. Near some ballustrades built by the British during the last years of the Raj, the man is leaning forward on his knees and his head is buried in gravel. Practicing Tapas or Niyamas, is one form of Austerity that holy men like this perform to cleanse themselves of bad thoughts. It is a conservation of energy; an increase of power in the system by sense control; a process of positive-thought, self-imposed hardships and inner-strength - all to gain a higher being for oneself. They might stand in cold water in winter, stand on or bury their heads in earth. Niyamas also breeds non-violence, truthfullness, non-stealing, moderation, non-possessiveness, purity, contentment, discipline, study and surrender.

Together they are acting as part of the International Christian Dance Fellowship whose performers include performers, choreographers and teachers of all styles of dance technique, as well as those who dance in worship, intercession, healing, evangelism and prophetic interpretation. • A memorial has been placed where ?Sarah? died near the A29 in Pulborough, Sussex, England, UK. Were we to ignore this place where someone's life ended, the victim would just be a statistic but flowers are left to there too with touching poems and dedications written by family and loved-ones. One reads: ?A little Angel lent, not given/to be born on earth/and grow in Heaven/We have lost a Princess, but gained an Angel/To take you so soon is tragic we know/but when Jesus calls, you just have to go." From a project about makeshift shrines: ?Britons have long installed memorials in the landscape: Statues and monuments to war heroes, Princesses and the socially privileged. We lay wreaths to the ordinary who die suddenly - folk killed as pedestrians, as drivers or by alcohol, all celebrated on roadsides and cities with simple, haunting roadside remembrances.

  • In the terminal at Charles de Gaulle/Roissy airport, Paris France, the peace of the airport chapel looks like a Star Trek-style place of worship, typical of the new airport experience pushed upon in the late '60s and early '70s. Short stools and padded benches line the intimate space in the satellite building. Designed by Paul Andreu, Charles de Gaulle became a symbol for airport modernity becoming an 'Aérogare' where trains and planes whisk the new world traveller of the late '60s, away beyond an ever-extending horizon. From here, the Air France Concorde crashed on the aviation employment town of Gonesse on July 25th 2000. • During a journey into America's hinterlands, days after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, crowds of New Yorkers gathered at barriers where streets were closed, near Ground Zero, to offer help for volunteers: Spare beds offered, free food distributed, and offers of salvation. A man here has a board urging prayer and revival for those feeling spiritually adrift. American flags hang from buildings and businessmen and tourists talk in the street with some wearing dust masks. In outpourings of grief, anger and patriotic rhetoric, flags were flown as never before as America sought to express their emotions and a unity. .

  • A Muslim community Imam prays at the bedside of a patient who is staying on the Phyllis Friend surgical ward, Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, London. They both hold out their hands in prayer and the patient puts them to his face. It is daylight behind the bed but the two men are lit by artificial light from a bulb. The Royal London is one of London's oldest, having been founded in 1740 and is a major teaching hospital in Whitechapel, East London. It is part of the Barts and the London NHS Trust, alongside St Bartholomew's Hospital ("Barts"), which is a couple of miles away. Because of the cultural profile of East London, patients tend to be from many faiths, speaking many languages.

On the wall is a poster offering welcome to other religions: To Sikhs, Buddhists, Christians, Jews, Humanists, Jains, Hindus and Rastafarians, to name a few. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009). ...

  • Lit by the bight lights of Times Square in New York City, US flags hang from the scaffolding of a construction site four days after the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11th. Above the Stars and Stripes, we see fashion advertising bllboards showing white American models posed in contemporary couture proving that business and the media works endlessly to provide content and commerce amid the emotional turmoil and horrors of the terrorist attacks. Large white sheets pronounce prayers for the families of victims and to God Bless America.

  • A tourist crouches on the original 4th century marble starting line at ancient Olympia's athletics track where both ancient Greeks and Romans held their games. Nike was the Goddess of Victory to whom Olympic athletes made offerings and prayers before competition. Hercules is said to have paced out the 600 Greek feet, or 'Stadion,' from which we get the word 'Stadium'. Olympic spectators suffered dehydration due to to extreme heat. The 29th modern Olympic circus came home to Greece in 2004 and at the birthplace of athletics and the Olympic ideal, amid the woodland of ancient Olympia where for 1,100 continuous years, the ancients held their pagan festival of sport and debauchery. The modern games share many characteristics with its ancient counterpart. Corruption, politics and cheating interfered then as it does now.

  • On a partially-demolished building, a mural of the ancient Goddess Nike remains chipped and scraped on an old restaurant wall. Nike was the Goddess of Victory to whom Olympic athletes made offerings and prayers at the Temple of Zeus before competition but this site is in the heart of the modern town of Olympia that has grown up around the birthplace of athletics, amid the woodland of ancient Olympia where for 1,100 continuous years, the ancients held their pagan festival of sport and debauchery. The modern games share many characteristics with its ancient counterpart. Corruption, politics and cheating interfered then as it does now and the 2004 Athens Olympiad echoed both what was great and horrid about the past.
