  • City workers carry office possessions including trays and files that were damaged by the IRA bomb that devastated the City of London's Bishopsgate area in 1993. Allowed to return to their desks to recover their data and working paperwork, they walk through the ancient streets en route to new emergency office elsewhere in the capital. The Irish Republican Army (IRA) exploded a truck bomb on Bishopsgate. Buildings up to 500 metres away were damaged with one and a half million square feet (140,000 m) of office space being affected and over 500 tonnes of glass broken. Repair costs reached approx £350 million. It was said that Roman remains could be viewed at the bottom of the pit the bomb created. One person was killed when the one ton fertiliser bomb detonated directly outside the medieval St Ethelburga's church.

  • Possessions and rubbish collects outside a repossessed Victorian terraced house in south London. In the foreground we see a For Sale sign strapped on the brick wall by local estate agents Burnet Ware & Graves in Herne Hill, Lambeth SE24. The front bay window has been sealed up with plyboard to stop squatters gaining entrance and the domestic remnants of evicted owners who have perhaps defaulted on their mortgage is thrown on the path - a scene of domestic poverty. As a result of the 1987 a stock market collapse, the UK economy experienced a downturn resulting in public services suffering a reduction, including the loss of owners' homes. The recession of the early 1990s describes the period of economic downturn affecting much of the world in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

  • An after-work Christmas party at Coates Wine Bar on London Wall (street) gathers energy after nine o'clock pm at a table near the bar. A group of three girls sing along to a karaoke machine while one of the three sticks out her tongue towards her friend. They are each drinking glasses of white wine and two packets of Marlboro and one of Silk Cut cigarettes lies on the table surrounded by their handbags and other possessions including a camera. There are other people in the background including two men at the bar and a man on his own edging past with a cigarette in his right hand. It is a gloomy place to party with little artificial light to colour (color) the scene. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

  • Having packed nearly all their possessions into a removal company's truck, a family have left this terraced house apart from a telephone that sits on the carpet in the middle of the carpet, on a ground floor home in Herne Hill, South London England UK. The family have taken the precaution of using a professional removal company, rather than trying to move themselves, and we see a yellow storage van parked outside in the street ready to drive the house's contents to the new property. This family home is now empty awaiting its new occupants who will soon arrive with their own items.

  • Three bathers lie on the shingle in the lee of a groyne, a wooden screen from the fresh breeze that has been written on by unknown people having scrawled their names and a noughts and crosses puzzle written in chalk. One person wears his socks in true English style and the lady in the middle has her bag containing possessions near her head. Above them sits a lifeguard on a pair of high steps, peering along the beach with a pair of binoculars. Meanwhile, a lone seagull wheels around the coastal thermals and is caught between the wooden slats of the groyne.

  • Sitting among others in long grass a middle-class lady reads the high-circulation Daily Mail newspaper during a lunchtime break at the Chelsea Flower Show, in London England. The front page headline reads 'Icy Blast from the Kremlin' in an echo from the darkest days of the Cold War, when western media fuelled the insatiable appetite for propaganda. But this scene is from May 1989 before the fall of the Berlin Wall and when the eastern states of the Warsaw Pact were still ruled by their Communist masters. Visitors to this annual horticultural event either sit in the cool shade or like this woman who appears comfortable cross-legged in sandals and a summer dress, stays under the hot mid-day sun with her tabloid format paper spread and with her possessions kept in a shoulder bag.

  • Pilots of the 'Red Arrows', Britain's Royal Air Force aerobatic team exchange green flying suits for famous red ones on PDA Day at RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus. PDA (or 'Public Display Authority'), is when they are allowed by senior RAF officers to perform as a military aerobatic show in front of the public - following a special test flight when their every move and mistake is assessed and graded. Until that day arrives, their training and practicing is done in the privacy of their own airfield at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, UK or here in the glare of Akrotiri. The pilots are called reds and their ground crew, the Blues after their summer air show uniforms.

  • Surrounded by books and holy relics, a monk follower of Tibetan-Buddhism engages in Puja, or prayer, at the Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery and Tibetan Centre in Eskdalemuir, Scotland. This young western man wears traditional Tibetan monk's clothes, prays in a caravan adapted to become a woodland home in the woodland near the Centre. He is a western visitor, many of whom have had a troubled youth and are sometimes escaping a criminal past, who arrive in the Scottish wilderness for isolated Retreat periods, for short-term spiritual relaxation or to follow Tibetan teaching methods for discovering inner-peace, through prayer and meditation. This Tibetan Buddhist complex associated with the Kagyu school celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2007.
