Under international law, everyone on a holiday ship like this needs to know what do in the event of an emergency at sea so well-organised drills are rehearsed on deck. The baby looks uncomfortable wrapped in his life vest but sucks on a pacifier dummy. The father looks relaxed in the knowledge that their lives are not risk on this occasion. The Panamanian-registered MS Ecstasy is a 70,367 ton cruise ship carrying 2,052 passengers and 920 crew belonging to Vegas-style Carnival Cruise lines.

Even small remote atoll communites in the Maldives have strong phone signals and many also have good Wi-Fi connections. He and his crew have been catching Yellow Fin Tuna in the seas north of the capital Male in this Islamic Republic. Their catch is for export to the EU and in particular, the UK's supermarkets. There is no limit and no obvious destination, just infinity and the thought of tomorrow.

  • The flight-deck crew of a Sri Lankan Airlines A340-300 series Airbus - registration number 4R-ADE - perform a series of pre-flight checks before a scheduled departure, while on the apron at Malé international airport in the Republic of the Maldives. Featuring electronic instruments it is known as a 'glass cockpit' and using a printed checklist manual, they methodically work through dozens of complex systems that require accurate input before the aircraft is ready for take off. Flight navigation computers, fuel and engine settings and radio frequencies all need programming by the two pilots, the captain on the left and the First Officer on the right. These modern airliners have only two pilots in a modern flight-deck as technology superceeded the need for a third member, the flight-engineers of a previous era of aviation.

Historically the Thames was only so-named downstream of the village; upstream it is named the Isis, and Ordnance Survey maps continue to label the river as "River Thames or Isis" until Dorchester.

  • Half-way across the Gulf of Mexico, between Miami and Cancun in Mexico, Carnival Cruise's Fun Ship Ecstasy's passengers are on the Sun deck to enjoy the first few days sailing on the tropical seas. One of the ship's photographers has passed around a ship's circular life ring buoy through which one busty blonde lady has posed for a photograph and is about to pass it on to her nearest neighbour. She is wearing a garish pink and yellow bikini and is holding the life-saving device so that only her breasts are showing, obscuring her face. We see the name of the ship, Ecstasy, around the ring and the plastic ropes are falling on the lady's cleavage, forming circles around her bosoms. In the background, another cruise traveller (traveler) wears a straw sun hat and is also sitting on a blue sun lounger. We see exposed, tanned skin and it looks baking hot with the tropical sun at its zenith, directly overhead at mid-day. Carnival was a pioneer in the concept of cheaper and shorter cruises. Its ships are known for their Las Vegas decor and entertainment. The line calls its ships The Fun Ships. The MS Ecstasy is a Fantasy class cruise ship featuring two pools, whirlpools, a variety of dining options, nightclubs, a casino, and duty-free shopping. After Hurricane Katrina, she spent six months in New Orleans serving as quarters for refugees and relief workers. She suffered heavy damage in 1998 after the laundry room in the ship's stern caught fire damaging much of her stern and aft section.

  • Whilst on a cruise aboard the Fun Ship Ecstasy during a voyage from Miami around the Gulf of Mexico, passengers enjoy a sexual game on deck beneath a strong tropical sun. Male contestants have lined up to be inspected by a blindfolded lady wearing a swim suit and painted nails who is required to identify her own husband by feeling his lower body and torso. Howls of laughter emit from the other men as the lady realises that this is indeed her own spouse who stands on a chair, his bulging crotch at chest height. She smiles to herself, still blind beneath a towel and the moment is funny enough for all to enjoy a happy hour of organised entertainment on deck. Told to fetch their life vests from their respective cabins and suites, they have gathered at various muster points around the vessel to hear the crews' instructions about abandoning ship or the precuations needed to enter the water. We look down from a higher deck to see several dozen tourists on red vests, milling around awaiting the signal to return to their previous activities and entertainment.   • Vinnie Browse switches off his overhead reading light in his Junior Rating bunk aboard HMS Vigilant, a 16,000 ton, 150m long Vanguard class nuclear submarine while moored at HM Naval Base Clyde, Faslane, Scotland. Vigilant has a crew of 140 men and when at sea, only incoming communication, family-grams, are allowed so many months away on operational duty can be tough on home life. On-board entertainment is therefore important for morale. The Vanguard Class SSBN (Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear) provides the United Kingdom's strategic nuclear deterrent and carries Trident II ballistic missiles, powered by a pressurised water reactor (PWR) fuelled by a ton of fissionable uranium elements producing huge amounts of energy.   • A family risk their safety near a larger cruiser while passing-by in a tiny motorised boat on the River Thames during the Henley Royal Regatta boat races, England. The father and children float past the larger vessel that could badly damage their boat in a collision. The river is busy on Regatta weekend and vessels of all shapes and sizes occupy an otherwise narrow stretch of water in rural Oxfordshire. Parties and good-humour on-board the cruisers still means that river laws and good behaviour must be followed to avoid accidents. In 1829 a boat race challenge was held between teams representing the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The venue chosen was a straight stretch of the Thames at the small town of Henley-on-Thames. Now held July and is one of the main dates on the sporting calendar and social season for the hoi polloi.

  • High up in the picture, two employees (one in traditional Arab clothes, the other in western dress) of Bahrain International Airport stand on the edge of a passenger 'air bridge' to oversee the departure of an airliner at Bahrain International Airport as it is pushed back by an unseen airport vehicle. It is night time and the ramp (or aircraft parking tarmac) is illuminated by yellow artificial light with the bridge itself, lit my overhead fluorescent tubes that give a blue-green tint above the mens' heads who watch the nose of a departing airliner. It is slowly taken backwards on its way to the runway take-off  position with its passengers on-board. We see only the fuselage, wings and part of its engine cowlings but not the undercarriage wheels, nor the ground itself. The men look as if they are floating in mid-air, being disembodied from the rest of the airfield's equipment.

Some 80-plus members of the team will spend six weeks away from home. 23 tons of spares and personal effects travel ahead by ship with another 10 tons travelling on-board a C-130 transport aircraft. The Suppliers ensure possessions and spares are stored taking many weeks of meticulous planning. .

Sewn onto the traveller's rucksack, the countries represented by these patches show a much-travelled young person who has amassed a collection of world air miles and travel experiences, with their national flags and emblems on display in a way that adventurers show their routes and wanderlust to others, perhaps as proof of a lifetime wandering the world's borders and airports. As each badge is added, it accounts for new travel companions and the hazards and joys of modern air travel.   • A computer-generated astronaut lies down on board a space flight on Virgin Galactic's  SpaceShipTwo's,  unveiled as a replica model during Wired NextFest at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, New York. Under construction by Burt Rutan in Mojave, California and looking more like '2001 A Space Odyssey,' than future everyday holidays, SpaceShipTwo is a re-usable orbiting vehicle that will become an important tool for Man's leisure time in space when affordable commercial space tourism starting in 2009/10. Aboard the space vehicle will be 6 passengers, each paying $200,000 for the 40 minute flight to 360,000 feet (109.73km, or 68.18 miles) and to experience 6 minutes of weighlessness. From these circular portholes, astronauts will see 1,000 miles having taken off from the new Spaceport America, New Mexico. .
