  • A young boy of about 5 years-old stands on a seaside bridge as an older man walks past in the early 1960s. Seen from a low angle, we look up at the small boy standing on some steps of a bridge on the seafront at Southend-on-Sea in Essex, recorded on a film camera by the boy's father, an amateur photographer in 1962. The picture shows us a memory of nostalgia in an era from the last century.

  • The British art historian John Gage (June 1938-Feb 2012) known for his books on Turner and the art of the Industrial revolution. John Gage, who has died aged 73, was an art historian whose incisive intelligence and deep commitment to exploring the significance of colour in painting made him one of the most original and important figures working in the field. His magisterial book on understandings of colour in western art, Colour and Culture: Practice and Meaning from Antiquity to Abstraction (1993), has become a standard work of reference. The fruit of the better part of a lifetime's work, it has found a wide audience well outside the field of art history, and has been translated into five languages. John also wrote groundbreaking studies on Turner that transformed our understanding of this artist's approach to painting, showing how its vivid visual qualities do not speak just to the eye, but address both eye and mind in a way that is rich with symbolic and cultural meaning.

The male in the foreground is seen in close-up and we see the expanse of his back covered in freckles. After many sunny hours beneath solar rays he is tanned but not burned. Nevertheless, he is at risk of the pigment in those freckles turning into melanomas, the cause of skin cancer. More than 10,000 people a year are developing the deadliest form of skin cancer as a result of package holidays and excessive use of sunbeds. Cases of malignant melanoma rose by 650 (6.5 per cent) in a single year as a result of binge-tanning at home and abroad, according to Cancer Research UK.

It is patrolled by Burlington Arcade Beadles in traditional uniforms including top hats and frockcoats. The original beadles were all former members of Lord George Cavendish's regiment, the 10th Hussars.
