  • "One candle." A family are gathered to celebrate the first birthday of a young child, the back garden of her parent's south London home. The birthday girl reaches out to touch the single lit candle on a chocolate log cake while her grandmother and mother both show her how to blow and extinguish the flame instead. Friends and relatives are sat around the garden on a perfect late-summer afternoon, drinking and laughing on this joyous occasion, a milestone in the first year of any young life. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • While on ceremonial duties at the Queen's Buckingham Palace, members of the Welsh Guards prepare the finer details of uniform presentation at the Wellington barracks, opposite the Palace in central London, England. Buffing up their bearskin hats and brushing away any specks of dust from shoulders, they each help the other appear as near-perfect as they can before parading in front of thousands during the Changing of the Guard or at other times, during tropping of the Colour on the Queen's birthday occasion. Formed in 1915 by order of King George V, have fought in every war since but are housed at the Wellington Barracks purely for ceremonial reasons, also serving on active duty in the world's trouble spots, where their professionalism is demanded by their British Ministry of Defence masters.

  • A lady office worker trying to enjoy her lunchtime in spring sunshine, ignores a traditional band of Morris Men who gather to begin a St George's Day performance at the church of St. Botolph's without Bishopsgate in the City of London. Wearing white uniforms they jig their traditional dance, a form of English folk dance accompanied by accordion and pipes. It is based on rhythmic stepping and the execution of choreographed figures by a group of dancers. Implements such as sticks, swords, and handkerchiefs may also be wielded by the dancers. In a small number of dances for one or two men, steps are performed near and across a pair of clay tobacco pipes laid across each other on the floor. English records of Morris dancing date back to 1448.

  • Listening intently to a speech given by the Rt. Hon. Kenneth Clarke MP, the then-Chancellor in John Major's Conservative government of 1994, these city and financial dignitaries have feasted well in the old Guildhall, the City of London's town hall - the Guildhall - in the historic financial district of the capital. Wearing formal banquet attire, these chiefs of industry appear to be an all-male audience though there were also women sat at tables during the Banker's Dinner held every in June when the Chancellor of the Exchequer delivers a speech known as the Mansion House Speech hosted by the Lord Mayor, which takes its name from his official residence nearby. They concentrate on the speech to hear the Chancellor's predictions for growth and prosperity.

Hundreds of members of the armed forces, the Caribbean community, friends and neighbours attended the service because Flt Sgt Brown was one the last 'pilots of the Caribbean', a group of Afro-Caribbean volunteer RAF personnel but when he died at the age of 96 no family members were traced and so a campaign followed to recognise his wartime service and for a military send-off in London's central RAF church.
