  • A wife gives an tight, affectionate hug to her husband on the Promenade at North Bay, Scarborough, North Yorkshire. There is no such showing of reciprocated love from the man who continues to read a cricket report in the sports page of his tabloid newspaper. She is wearing a floral summer top and he is topless. In the background we see a bustling sea front. People are walking along the Prom, enjoying the sun and warmth of this usually chilly area of Britain.

  • An aviation enthusiast eats an ice cream during an airshow at North Weald in Essex, southern England. Slurping on the melting ice cream, the odd-looking man wearing an anorak looks to unseen aircraft parked alongside the public areas during the hours before the flying displays commence at this small airfield north of London.

  • A portrait of an aviation enthusiast with boxes of Airfix modelling kits during an airshow at North Weald in Essex, southern England. Holding a silver equipment case in one hand and his camera in another, the eccentric obsessive wears an anorak adorned with collectable badges and pins. Airfix is a UK manufacturer of plastic scale model kits of aircraft and other subjects. In Britain, the name Airfix is synonymous with the hobby, a plastic model of this type is often simply referred to as "an airfix kit" even if made by another manufacturer.

The Christian names of Paul, Chris and John plus the Beatles and the year of 1981 have been gouged into the soft geology, read clearly in backlit sunshine. In the distance are the smooth waters of the North Sea

  • Spectators watch an air show at North Weald in Cambridgeshire, England. A man films a lone aircraft that banks across the summer sky. The enthusiast's blue denim jacket is almost fully-covered with aeronautical badges which depict various foreign military aerobatic teams, including the Swiss, Norwegian and German squadrons, whose emblems have been stitched into the fabric. Plane spotters form hardcore groups of aviation pilgrims. Logging and photographing flying machines, they follow air displays across their own countries and the calendars of other European festivals that attract hundreds of thousands. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.

  • Young lady vet, Diana Stapleton with calf at Manor House Farm, Barnoldswick near Settle, North Yorkshire, England. Nursing a healthy cow in the warmth of the farmer's barn, she has just delivered twin calves and checks on other members of the herd before leaving for another appointment. Diana Stapleton belonged to the Dalehead Veterinary Group based in nearby Settle for 15 years, covering a 20-mile area of 500 remote farms though she specialised in small animals and farmwork before dying suddenly at the age of 39.

  • A mid-morning mist sweeps across the seafront's South Beach at Scarborough, the seaside town in North Yorkshire. Kids run about on the wet sand, some leaping and some just carrying buckets of salt water for sandcastles elsewhere. With the freedom and open-space, children who perhaps live in bleak industrial towns in northern England can enjoy the fresh-air on this north-eastern coast. Their reflections are also seen on the shiny sand and although it appears to be as grim as their home may be, it is in fact a warm day but the daily sea fogs that roll across this beach, a microclimate exists and is unique to this area.

  • Using a tabloid newspaper, a father seeks shelter from sunshine while sitting in a council deck chair. On the front page of the paper is a headline saying "Butchered' showing a picture of an unfortunate young 3 year-old boy murdered by a maniac axeman. Close-by is the man's own son who is digging a hole furiously in the sand. He looks uncannily like a slightly older version of the murdered boy. This coincidence is heightened because of the body-language of the digging lad, seemingly about to chop an unseen object with his red spade. Both man and boy are on holiday at the northern English seaside resort of Scarborough, North Yorkshire and they are otherwise having a great time on South Beach, near the Grand Hotel building, high up on the cliff.

  • Female vet, Diana Stapleton is ecstatically happy after successfully delivering twin calves to Fresian cow at Manor House Farm, Barnoldswick near Settle, North Yorkshire, England. With the two youngsters spread on the soft straw of the barn, and their mother facing the corner of the outhouse with the resulting afterbirth still attached, Diana makes her sense of achievement clear to the farmer who must also be relived about the positive outcome. The survival of twin cattle births depends on thorough training and an instinct for animal husbandry and medical requirements. Diana Stapleton belonged to the Dalehead Veterinary Group based in nearby Settle for 15 years, covering a 20-mile area of 500 remote farms though she specialised in small animals and farmwork before dying suddenly at the age of 39.

  • Local signpost showing nearby village milage and the ruins of Cistercian Byland Abbey. Located near Coxwold and Oldstead and on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, Byland Abbey was described in the late 12th century as one of the shining lights of northern monasticism. The abbey rose to be one of the largest of the Savigniac order in Britain and the remains of the buildings, particularly the great church, are significant in the development of northern architecture in the second half of the 12th century. Sacked by a Scots army after the battle of Shaws Moor in 1322, it was destroyed in the Dissolution of abbeys and monasteries by Henry VIII in 1538; the buildings then became ruinous and a source of building stone for local people.

  • RAF Fylingdales is a British Royal Air Force station high on Snod Hill in the North York Moors, England. Before their demolition by Ministry of Defence contractors this early attack warning Cold War facility, consisted of three 40-metre-diameter 'golfballs' or geodesic domes (radomes) containing mechanically steered radar. They became a local tourist attraction and coach tours drove past the site listening to the interference on radios emitted by the radomes. They have since been replaced by the current tetrahedron ('pyramid') structure and is still a secret location. Its Motto is "Vigilamus" ("We are watching"). It is now a radar base and part of the United States-controlled Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS)...
