  • An aerial landscape view of a railway network whose tracks and rails converge on a station in central London. Three trains filled with commuters all make their way into this unseen railway hub. The route curls away into the distance, slicing its way through the capital. London Rail is a directorate of Transport for London (TFL), involved in the relationship with the National Rail network within London, UK. It manages non-tube rail systems in London. Railways started to change the landscape of London itself, followed by its suburbs in the mid to late 19th century when streets and neighbourhoods were cut in half by the new infrastructure.

  • As evening light fades, bright light from the electricity-hungry Canary Wharf docklands development is supplied by the voltage from electricity cables and supporting struts at an east London sub-station, England. A network of 110 miles of cables have stretched across 542 'L6' pylons across England's Kent countryside, from the coal-fired power station at Dungeness to this location, carrying 40,000 Volts along this network of aluminium cables to power some of London's high supply demands. Insatiable appetites for energy means electricity is now an expensive commodity after climbing oil prices doubled electricity utility bills for some domestic users.

  • A long-distance detail of London's telecommunications BT Telecom Tower. The BT Tower is a communications tower located in Fitzrovia, London, owned by BT Group. It has been previously known as the Post Office Tower, the London Telecom Tower and the British Telecom Tower. The main structure is 177 metres (581 ft) tall, with a further section of aerial rigging bringing the total height to 191 metres (627 ft). In 1962, the BT Tower overtook St Paul's Cathedral to become the tallest building in London. Its primary purpose was to support the microwave aerials then used to carry telecommunications traffic from London to the rest of the country, as part of the British Telecom microwave network.

  • In front of an ad for Mercury, the 90s mobile phone network provider, a city worker uses his mobile phone in a London street. Actor Harry Enfield was the face of the media campaign on tv and in print to help promote the young industry, still then an expensive accessory for the ordinary Briton. Mercury Communications, was a national telephone company in the United Kingdom, formed in 1981 as a subsidiary of Cable & Wireless to challenge the monopoly of British Telecom (BT). Mercury was the first competitor to BT, and although it proved only moderately successful at challenging their dominance, it was to set the path for new communication companies to attempt the same. In 1997, Mercury ceased to exist as a brand with its amalgamation into the operations of Cable & Wireless Communications and totally exited from the telecommunications business by 1999.

  • An elderly lady walks past the intimidating backdrop of tagged walls of Plaistow, an east London station after the crime of defacement and criminal damage to London Underground property has been committed by persons unknown - a persistent problem that costs the transport company network up to £3 million a year to remove. If caught, juvenile delinquents may escape with only a caution because of their age but older ones are prosecuted, though some times after leaving many thousands of tags across their neighbourhood.

  • Standing in their cradles are three members of a National Grid Live-line electricity cable crew, protected in a conductive cage beneath the electricy cables that they maintaining. We see the sagging cables stretching to distant electricity pylons and the three human figures standing like astonauts in their protective cradles. Huge structure of girders and relays are behind them and they wear safety clothing allowing them to work comfortably inside the electrical field at close range with gloved hands. • Moving steadily 100 feet (8 metres) along a live-line electricity cable, a National Grid maintenance worker protected in a conductive cage, proceeds to the next 'separator' that holds the high-voltage cables from touching each other. From the ground we see the sagging cables stretching to a distant electricity pylon and two yellow cages, one large in the foreground where we see the human figure standing like an astonaut, and the other cage out of focus, a greater distance away but all dwarfed by the huge structure of girders and relays. Wearing clothing bonded to the conductor, the lineman can work comfortably inside the electrical field at close range with gloved hands. • A map detail of the London underground (subway) network has been sprayed by an unknown graffiti tagger, whose swirling aerosol spray has indelibly marked the illustration of tube lines and stations in England's capital. We see the poster title Journey Planner and the shadow of the tube station wooden roof overhang and three styles of graffiti by three perpetrators. Graffiti vandalism costs the British taxpayer £100 million Pounds a year, £6 million alone is spent by transport companies whose cleaning squads remove offending material.

  • Striding urgently are a group of rail commuters emerging from London Bridge main line station in central London along a station concourse. Marching in step, the strangers are on their way to work in the City of London or Southwark on the south bank of the Thames. They are all passing-by a mobile smoothie drink kiosk that has the slogan "Guaranteed to keep you going till lunch." London Bridge station is one of 18 railway stations managed by Network Rail and is a major transport terminus and interchange for central London and serves over 42 million people a year. The tube station serves the Jubilee Line and the Bank branch of the Northern Line.

  • A male commuter disappears underground after a rail journey terminated at the London Bridge mainline station. Travelling downwards into the London Underground tube system, the man seen as a generic silhouette is seen only from the upper legs and moves against the orange light from the escalator well wall. The polished machinery is in the foreground and the floor is spotlessley clean. • As blue light fades on a bitterly cold winter's evening, the barrier of an Austrian level-crossing has been lowered to stop traffic and allow a high-speed ICE-T train to continue on its route through, near Salzburg, Austria, Europe. OBB, the Austrian Federal Railways operate a network of 5,683 km makes them the by far largest railway-company in this country. Heavy snow has fallen in this region of the Alps and deposits have settled on the fences and the glowing red stop traffic light, signalling for motorists to halt at this dangerous road-crossing location. So fast is this mode of transport, it blurs past this cold, desolate spot where only one nearby house is next to the trackside. (From a story about travelling through 6 European countries by coach in 7 days).

  • Electricity cables stretch into early morning mist above Swanscombe, Kent, London England. In the foreground we see a stack of discs called Insulators which stop the electricity carried in the conductor (the wires strung between each pylon) from jumping to the pylon and then down to earth. The cables disappear into the winter fog creating a Sci-Fi scene of 21st technology. Diagonally, the cables travel across the picture but they are part of a line of 542 pylons that have already crossed 110 miles of English countryside, carrying 40,000 Volts along this network of aluminium cables from Dungeness coal-fired power station to West Ham sub station in London's East End - to power the West End's high energy supply demands.

  • Near the junction of the 400 to Buckhead, the 401 highway divides and splits during afternoon rush-hour traffic which slows and builds up so that vehicles and cars back-up as they head home and out of Downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The inner median is coned off during some construction work which slows the traffic even more. Crossing the 5-lane road comes a train of Atlanta's own mass-transit system, the MARTA network and it approaches the overpass with care. We see the infrastructure of a modern metropolis at the busiest time of day when the exodus to get home puts the roads and feeder lanes under the most pressure. Fortunately, the weather is fine with good visibility making drivers' journeys a little shorter and more tolerable but it shows too America's habit and dependency on car culture.

  • The outline of electricity cables stretch across a gloomy winter sky in woodland near Wrington, North Somerset England. Diagonally, the cables travel across the picture but they are part of a line of L6 pylons that have already crossed many miles of South-West England's countryside, carrying 40,000 Volts along this network of aluminium cables to power some of Bristol's high supply demands. In the foreground we see the bare boughs and branches of trees creating a Sci-Fi scene of ugly 21st technology versus the beauty of nature. Insatiable appetites for raw power and energy means electricity is now an expensive comodity after climbing oil prices doubled electricity utility bills for some domestic users.
