  • A middle-aged man, possibly in his late-fifties, holds the lead of his pet dog on a park bench in London England. Afternoon sun filters through nearby trees and the man is wearing a simple, plain white shirt. He sits crossed-legs on this warm afternoon gazing to a point in the distance looking lonely and hopeful of meeting someone else, or maybe of events in a long life. His dog is the man's best friend and companion and he guards him with a strong hand as a master should.

  • A young man whistles to a tune that he is listening to through headphones. It is 1989 and the Walkman is the toy of choice for the urban young - the first portable music device that helped change the way society took their taped music out and about - and years before the Apple iPod. It worked but one had to press the foam pads into the ears to drown out background city noise plus the cassette tape often snagged and twisted, ruining the product.

They are part of a larger grouping of people, settled mainly along the middle reaches of the Baram, Bintulu, and Rajang rivers in Sarawak, Malaysia and referred collectively as the Orang Ulu, or upriver people. Like some other Dayak people, they are known for being fierce warriors, former headhunters, adept in Upland rice cultivation, and having extensive tattoos and stretched earlobes amongst both sexes.

  • Two young men dressed in office suits casually stuff their lunches during a hot lunchtime break in the Broadgate Estate in the City of London. Both with legs across knees, the lads in their 20s sit on a bench beneath a tree alongside the statue of a traditional gardener, slightly bent and equipped with hoe and wearing a wastecoat, hobnailed boots and flat cap, an iconic salt-of-the-earth workman. This scene suggests the social divisions of the working man: Of the young, educated post-war generation whose opportunities have afforded them a faster lifestyle, far removed from that of the physically-exhausted man whose life has been spent working the honest land. The English social divide is clearly represented here as the harshness of the manual labourer versus the youth of today, seen in the middle of the modern city.

  • A man has chosen a free surface to spread himself out on during a lunchtime break in the City of London. Having removed his shirt and tie, he sunbathes topless with only his trousers and shoes, the clue as to his day-job in a London office. There is a heat wave in the capital and others are soaking up rays during a working week. Bronzed and asleep, the young man is carefree enough not to worry about his eccentric behaviour in a public place.

  • Beneath the giant, solid pillars of the Bank of England in the heart of London's financial district - the ancient Square Mile - a man dressed in a traditional pinstripe suit has stopped to make a phone call or check for messages. Halting his journey along this street he has opted to stand in line with a traffic no waiting cone and also near double-yellow lines that restrict parking or stopping. Without the cone or lines this scene would otherwise be without colour - the columns of this financial institution and the pavement (sidewalk) are drab - so the welcome yellow gives this picture more interest. We only see the man from the rear view and so he remains anonymous, a small person set against the scale of a large-scale financial landscape..

  • A young man in his twenties parties in the evening at a Coates Wine Bar on London Wall in the heart of the City of London, England. Holding a small glass containing a shot of alcohol, he sings at the top of his voice during a Karaoke night. He wears a shirt and tie so probably works in an office. Without a care in the world he has closed his eyes to enjoy the moment of elation and alcohol. It's dark in the bar with few lights in the background but spotlights have little effect to brighten up the scene.

  • A rather rotund man wearing a flat cap, a checked shirt under braces that keep his ample trousers up above his fat tummy, affectionately tickled his pet dog, a Whippet ,who stands still with two paws on his master's large leg. It is a bright day on the beach at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England. Bathers are running on the sand in the background and the man and his dog are content to watch the world go by from their promenade bench. Their is a great deal of trust and love these two have for each other - the gentleman having brought his dog on holiday to the seaside with him, rather than leave him with friends or in kennels. The dog is healthy, lithe and obviously has great speed in those muscular legs, vastly different to the man, whose frame is heavy and slow.

  • In evening city mist, a car park attendant stands guard over his downtown Atlanta parking lot. Next to him is a giant billboard for Marlboro with the classic face of the Marlboro cowboy, depicted drawing on a cigarette and wearing the traditional wide-brimmed stetson. They are low in the frame and the gloomy and eerie mist sits oppressively around the tall buildings, obscuring their top floors. Office lights still burn and a bright street light shines with the intensity of a small solar flare. The Marlboro Man is part of a tobacco advertising campaign for Marlboro cigarettes. The Marlboro Man was first conceived by the Leo Burnett agency in 1954. The image involves a rugged cowboy or cowboys, in nature with only a cigarette. The ads were originally conceived as a way to popularize filtered cigarettes, which at the time were considered feminine. Actor and author William Thourlby is said to have been the first Marlboro Man. The models who portrayed the Marlboro Man were New York Giants Quarterback Charley Conerly, New York Giants Defensive Back Jim Patton, Darrell Winfield, Dick Hammer, Brad Johnson, Bill Dutra, Dean Myers, Robert Norris, Wayne McLaren, David McLean and Tom Mattox. Two of them, McLaren and McLean, died of lung cancer.

  • As a young office worker sleeps incongruously on a marble pavement, a street sweeper nearby brushes away litter with a small dustpan. The manual labourer wears blue overalls, yellow gloves and keys in his back pocket while the man in a wastecoat and smart trousers and polished slip-on shoes appears to be fast asleep, his fingers across his chest. This scene suggests the social divisions of the working man: Of the young, educated post-war generation whose opportunities have afforded them a faster lifestyle, far removed from that of the physically-demanding job of a man whose life has been spent cleaning and sweeping. English social differences is clearly represented here as the harshness of the manual labourer versus a lazy youth of today, seen in the middle of the modern city.

  • Following UK commercial driving law, a lorry driver relaxes by reading in a window at the M40 motorway services in Warwickshire, England. Leaning back while engrossed in his book, the man is sitting in sunlight on this summer's day. Outside is a poster advertising the premium ice cream brand, Magnum. A girl is shown also lounging about enjoying a Magnum on a beautiful sun-kissed beach, with the sun reflecting on a calm sea. We see Magnum's web site and their products of Classic and White chocolate snacks in their wrappers. The man is oblivious to the nature of the ad but it lends a sense of paradise versus reality, between the fantasy of youth, natural beauty and the reality of an older working man on the road.

  • The solitary figure of a man stands on the roof of an office building in downtown Atlanta during a victory parade for the city's baseball team. The man may be a security guard, keeping watch over the streets below as crowds gather to honour the Atlanta Braves Baseball team, after their 1995 World Series win. The figure is in his manmade environment and the high walls and windows of the buildings that make up this metropolis dwarf this tiny human who in the scale and perspective of a modern city looks incongruous, isolated and insignificant.

  • A young man strides past the wall and name of the London Stock Exchange in the City of London. Walking fast past this financial institution, we see the young man's shadow on the wall beneath the name on the exterior wall. Three years after the so-called Big Bang in 1986 , this location at the old Stock Exchange Tower became redundant with the advent of the Big Bang, which deregulated many of the Stock Exchange's activities as it enabled an increased use of computerised systems that allowed dealing rooms to take precedence over face to face trading. Thus, in 2004, the House moved to a brand new headquarters in Paternoster Square, close to St Paul's Cathedral.

The man is close to the viewer, looking directly at us while other members of his community appear around a bend. Agriculture accounts for about 40% of Nepal's GDP, services comprise 41% and industry 22%. Agriculture employs 76% of the workforce, services 18% and manufacturing/craft-based industry 6%. Agricultural produce -- mostly grown in the Terai region bordering India -- includes tea, rice, corn, wheat, sugarcane, root crops, milk, and water buffalo meat. Industry mainly involves the processing of agricultural produce, including jute, sugarcane, tobacco, and grain.

  • With his body in shade and only his head in the sun, a Portuguese man stands in the street of central Lisbon to read the headlines of national and provincial newspapers which are pinned by their top right corners for passers-by to glance at or buy. Lit by early morning sun, the daily or weekly periodicals are set in a neat row for the benefit of this man and other citizens of the Portuguese capital. Ornate square tile mosaics are set in the pavement (sidewalk) in a design style that Lisbon is well-known for. In an age of mass-communications, reading one's media on paper in such a manner already seems old fashioned.

  • man is lying down on the steps of Royal Exchange opposite the Bank of England in the City of London, to take a nap under a mid-day sun in the heart of the capital's financial district. A red double-decker Routemaster bus has stopped in a queue of traffic opposite with an advert for London buses saying 'We've got to get this city to work' but with tattoos on his arms and his forehead and wearing heavy army-style boots, he is clearly not on his way to a job and therefore out-of-place in this busy part of London. Still to towel himself down, he looks chilled to the bone but stands talking to friends out of view. • An athletic man poses against a wall on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach, Florida. This fine specimen of a man wears roller-blades and trousers tucked into his skates with a yellow t-shirt with the word Frequency across his pectoral muscles. His shdow appears across the wall and because of the angle, his shape has been greatly exaggerated, his body becoming a much wider, stockier proportion than the reality. He stands with an arm resting high on the wall and the other on his hip, almost in a feminine manner. He is nonetheless the epitome of maleness, of virility with the healthy physique that women adore and other men are jealous of! The sdidewalk pavement arcs around a corner and the wall with its long shadow is a strong diagonal line across the picture, disappearing to the far right.

With the heavy load on his back, supported in the traditional Himalayan manner of a head strap that steadies the pack, the man makes his steady way down the foothill using a long pole for extra balance. Communities here partly-depend on the agriculture of rice-growing but also on the passing tourist trade. Western trekkers from all over the world walk through these tiny communities on their way up the series of climbing trails of the Annapurna Conservation Sanctuary circuit, a sometimes rigorous walk from the low hills of Pokhara to the higher altitudes of Annapurna, the (26,000 feet (8,000 metre) peak. To be greeted by so much choice is the most rewarding experience and the offer of hot showers is about the best reward for so much exertion.

  • Pensioners on holiday - or on a daytrip - at the Nofilk seaside town of Great Yarmouth wait for a friend beneath a wide banner advertising a Karaoke event at the venue behind them that night. There are four old ladies and one man in the group, all dressed in summer clothes for their day at the beach. Only the gentleman is looking our way as the women are otherwise occupied. There is litter at their feet and garish posters are behind them. The man is outnumbered, a gender ratio of 4 to 1.

  • A rather eccentric-looking man is seated on a bench on Blackpool's North Pier. This northern seaside resort in the north-west of England is diverse in its transient holiday population whose behaviour can be routinely odd. The pier has intricate cast ironwork seat backs dating from 1863 and the man sits with ankles crossed, wearing a suit and trilby hat on a warm summer's day. In the background we see families - parents and children - playing and walking on the beach at low-tide - the golden sands a much-visited aspect of Blackpool, the largest resort in the north of England and visited traditionally by working people from industrial towns and cities during the industrial revolution.

  • A gentleman dressed in a pin-stripe suit favoured by older workers in England, exhales the smoke from a fat cigar during a lunch-hour in Trinity Square in the City of London. The man is overweight and leads an unhealthy lifestyle, his chin overlapping his striped shirt. The cigar is held at the tips of two fingers and we can see in profile the billowing of a smoky cloud from the man's lips. Government statistics suggest that in 2001, 27% of adults aged 16 and over smoked cigarettes in England; 28% of men and 25% of women. 66% of smokers in England wanted to give up smoking but more than 120,000 deaths were caused by smoking in the UK in 1995; that is, one in five of all deaths.

  • Sitting drunk on a mid-town sidewalk (pavement), a construction worker wipes tears from his eyes. The man has driven from his mid-west home to offer help at the hazardous Ground Zero where for the past 4 days and nights he has been uncovering debris and human remains after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Exhausted and emotional, he was sent away for his own and the safety of others and alcohol was his first purchase. New Yorkers praised their heroes for assisting their city (and America) in their hour of need but here, passers-by stepped over him complaining of his drunken state. The now lonely man is distressed, tormented and psychologically fragile but gets no help. With his few possessions, his hard hat and flag, mask and cans of Budweiser we see a man at his lowest ebb.
