  • "I love Lambeth because .." post-it notes express an affection for south Londoners' home borough, left on a country show noticeboard. Pink heart-shaped stickers tell the viewer how much they appreciate life in this inner-city region of the capital where crime is a major negative aspect of living here. Many reasons are written by children whose optimism seems untainted.

  • A close-up detail of teenage words, written in marker pen on a young person's arm in the departures concourse of Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5. Holding the handles of her baggage trolley that has an open bag in which we see some possessions, the girl displays the words 'I (heart) love you' and the name of Kentin Bisou. It may be a declaration of true love or just a teenage prank before an adventure starts from this aviation hub. • "Anywhere between 3-5am." A mother has brought her three and a half month-old infant into bed and comforts her new baby back to sleep in bed by holding her hand at dawn, after a broken night's rest. We see large adult's fingers encircling the tiny digits of the baby girl who is mercifully sound asleep again, instinctively aware of love and trust. It is a picture of protective parenthood, of a close bond between mother and child in a safe, cosy, warm and idyllic place within the loving family home. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

In response to the violence and destruction that took place the week before, communities reacted with anger in a way rarely seen in a large UK city these days. Walls like these have sprung up in other locations where destruction was widespread and locals lost their convenience stores, sports shops and even homes.

  • Lying on her back with eyes closed, a young girl stretches her arms out allowing her father to support her weight in an empty swimming pool in Miami Florida. With complete trust, she lets herself go and yields to her own natural buoyancy as she floats amid this seemingly wide ocean of chlorinated water belonging to a hotel on Ocean Drive. We see her bright red costume clearly against the complimentary prime colour green in a vibrant display from the spectrum. It is a scene of love and confidence, of youth and health.

  • A rather rotund man wearing a flat cap, a checked shirt under braces that keep his ample trousers up above his fat tummy, affectionately tickled his pet dog, a Whippet ,who stands still with two paws on his master's large leg. It is a bright day on the beach at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England. Bathers are running on the sand in the background and the man and his dog are content to watch the world go by from their promenade bench. Their is a great deal of trust and love these two have for each other - the gentleman having brought his dog on holiday to the seaside with him, rather than leave him with friends or in kennels. The dog is healthy, lithe and obviously has great speed in those muscular legs, vastly different to the man, whose frame is heavy and slow.

  • A departing lover hugs her boyfriend farewell before her long-haul flight in the Departures concourse at. Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5. While embracing her young man, she gazes off into the distance amid the otherwise busy airport terminal where the emotions of parting as well as the joys of reunited loved-ones are played out in various parts of aviation hubs around the world. They are both in their own worlds, removed from the noise and confusion of other passengers. Her departure is brief and yet their sadness of being separated is plainly too much to bear. • A young girl of approximately 9 years of age plays with her father. With window light falling across the dad and girl, the two are both dressed in shades of blue - the father with darker skin than his daughter. They are both Tamil refugees from the Indian Ocean Island of Sri Lanka and have escaped the civil war there where their ethnic group is being dangerously persecuted by the Singhalese majority. The family have recently arrived in Britain seeking political asylum and are temporarily housed in a bare council flat in Chalk Farm in North London. The girl reaches up to touch the man's moustache and he lets her grab his mouth in a playful respite from their life-changing circumstances.

  • A large man with a shaved head and hairy back is seen from behind as he watches a display by the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team at Weymouth, England. A heart shape which grows from his bald head has been drawn with red smoke in the sky two Hawk jet aircraft taking part in the town's annual air show along the sea front. Such a tough-looking male specimen contrasts with the romance of this valentine symbol helping to make this picture's quirky juxtaposition touching. The Red Arrows use smoke to emphasize their flight-path, help the spectators see their manoeuvres and to make more of an enjoying spectacle. In blue sky they use white smoke for The Heart and red when overcast. We watch the man from below and see him craning his neck skywards, the skin on his thick neck wrinkling as he looks heavy from this angle.
