  • A middle-aged man, possibly in his late-fifties, holds the lead of his pet dog on a park bench in London England. Afternoon sun filters through nearby trees and the man is wearing a simple, plain white shirt. He sits crossed-legs on this warm afternoon gazing to a point in the distance looking lonely and hopeful of meeting someone else, or maybe of events in a long life. His dog is the man's best friend and companion and he guards him with a strong hand as a master should.

  • An empty hangar after the 'Red Arrows', Britain's Royal Air Force aerobatic team, have left their UK base at RAF Scampton for the sunnier climate and clearer skies of the Mediterranean at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. A lone engineer, left behind to continue the preparations before the start of the Summer air show season walks in the gap of the giant hangar doors. A yellow dustbin that collects foreign objects (FOD) is in the middle of the floor. The team will spend six weeks in Cyprus refining their air display techniques and skills before performing in front of the public from May onwards. Since 1965 they have flown over 4,000 such shows in 52 countries. The hangar dates to World War 2, housing Lancaster bombers of 617 Dambusters squadron who attacked the damns of the German Ruhr valley on 16th May 1943 using the Bouncing Bomb. This version of BAE Systems Hawks are low-tech, without computers nor fly-by-wire technology, Some of the team's aircraft are 25 years old and their airframes require frequent overhauls due.

  • An elderly lady watches the world go by from her street doorway in Lisbon's Bica district of the Portuguese capital. Looking out from her cosy small home that open out on to the narrow street, the old woman looks thoughtful, reflecting on her life perhaps spent in the same quarter of the Portguese capital. Lisbon's Bica district is a steep gradient area of narrow streets more peaceful and atmospheric than other busier locations where cars and trams make wider roads noisier. Flights of steps dissect the quarter which remains largely unspoilt.

  • Taken six months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, a German lady from the old German Democratic Republic (DDR or GDR) looks back over her shoulder nostalgically at an abandoned Trabant car on a sunlit street in eastern Berlin, once in the eastern zone before the Communist-inspired Berlin Wall was breached in November 1989. Blocks of modern East German-designed flats line the street and a tram line can be seen in the middle of the highway. The DDR-produced Trabant suffered poor performance, but its smoky two-stroke engine regarded with affection as a symbol of the more positive sides of East Germany. Many East Germans streamed into West Berlin and West Germany in their Trabants after the opening of the Berlin Wall. It was in production without any significant change for nearly 30 years. The name Trabant means "fellow traveler" in German.

Having left his old bicycle standing at the kerb of a narrow access road and in front of a field full of maturing maize, he bends down with much effort to dig in his fork or spade into the rich Alsace earth and lift out his vegetables to take home. This landscape is typically French or German (Alsace borders the western side of Germany and saw much tragic action in WW2) where maize is a nutritious foodstuff for cattle and also for ducks and geese who are force-fed it locally in the making of fois gras and pate.
