  • From a low angle we see, waving a cheery hello to a friend, a rather plump resident of the posh Essex seaside town of Frinton-on-Sea holds on to her oversized sunglasses, her cushion and a portable transistor radio - all of which she has been using whilst on the sea front that we see in the distance behind her round body. Wearing 'Tory blue' (the colour favoured by the Margaret Thatcher during the eighties) the lady has her straw hat tied under the folds of fat of an ample chin and appears to be calling an English Coo-ee! call to the out-of-sight acquaintance.

  • An elderly lady uses a 1970s model of Kodak Instamatic film camera whilst visiting an English country garden. With her eye pressed to the viewfinder, this amateur photographer is a pensioner on a day trip to the country and she takes a snapshot to record the beautiful view of flower beds and neatly-trimmed lawns. The Instamatic was a series of inexpensive, easy-to-load 126 and 110 cameras made by Kodak from 1963 and it was immensely successful, introducing a generation to low-cost photography and helping the growth of the contemporary photographic family album. More than 50 million Instamatic cameras were produced between 1963 and 1970. Kodak even gave away a considerable number in a joint promotion with Scott paper towels in the early 1970s in order to generate a large number of new photographers and stimulate lasting demand for its film business.

  • An elderly lady makes her way from her community village Memorial Hall which she has been volunteering this winter morning as part of a charity funds raising event. The lady might be old and frail but her spirit is such that she still finds the time to integrate into community life and remains active despite her years. Walking beneath the wrought-iron sign in Cleeve Prior, Worcestershire, she edges under tentatively to make her way home wearing a quilted coat and her wedding ring on her gnarled hands. A chilly late-morning sun shines across the architecture of the building and this is the look of a lady happy with her morning's activities with fellow parishioners.

  • In late afternoon winter sun, a lady emerges from deep shadow wearing a fur hat on the Kings Road in Chelsea, London, England. Foreign magazines line a rack of an outdoor newsagent and we only see the lady's head in the sunlight. There is a low colour temperature orange glow to the picture and only the lady's face wrapped in a fur hat and the magazine covers can be seen in detail. There are few highlights apart from the magazines in the sun, and more shadow area making this a dark image. The Kings Road has been famous in London since the 60s when fashion and flower power was the label most associated with being young and hip in the Swinging Sixties. It is more sober these days but families and young people tend to be wealthier, white and middle-class than other areas such as Carnaby Street which is seen as seedy and cheap.

  • In the privacy of her own country home, an elderly French lady is about to have eye-drops administered by her local doctor in the Vosges town of Ban de Laveline. Holding her eyelids up with a thumb in preparation of giving the woman the necessary medicine, the young health professional reaches for his equipment and the lady is left looking rather startled and uncomfortable for a few moments as her eye stares wildly. We are in her small cottage on the outskirts of town and the doctor is making his rounds to various patients unable to attend his daily surgery. The lady wears a colourful apron, typical of French working people, and is possibly in her seventies, living alone with only kind neighbours to ensure her safety. ....http://www.france-voyage.com/en/

  • A carer from an elderly peoples' residential home bends down to speak to an old lady who has been taken out for her daily walk in the fresh-air. The lady however cannot walk but seems to be enjoying her daily constitutional from the comfort of her wheelchair that the nursing specialist kindly pushes along a promenade in Frinton-on-Sea in Essex. With her hankie tucked in her sleeve she also seems to be slightly confused as if she might be suffering from a dementia or possibly just old and tired from the hardships after Britain at war. By 2050 the percentage of people worldwide over 65 years will have doubled.

  • "Crooked Lady." A twelve month-old girl who has recently learned to walk proudly strides past an elderly lady with balancing arms outstretched while at the Dulwich Show in South London. There is a marked difference between the youthful, upright posture of the young girl to the hunched and bent stance of the old woman who stands supporting herself on a brolley. It is a picture that compares youth with old age, the delight that a person of later years shows to a child whose life reaches far ahead. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • Half-way across the Gulf of Mexico, between Miami and Cancun in Mexico, Carnival Cruise's Fun Ship Ecstasy's passengers are on the Sun deck to enjoy the first few days sailing on the tropical seas. One of the ship's photographers has passed around a ship's circular life ring buoy through which one busty blonde lady has posed for a photograph and is about to pass it on to her nearest neighbour. She is wearing a garish pink and yellow bikini and is holding the life-saving device so that only her breasts are showing, obscuring her face. We see the name of the ship, Ecstasy, around the ring and the plastic ropes are falling on the lady's cleavage, forming circles around her bosoms. In the background, another cruise traveller (traveler) wears a straw sun hat and is also sitting on a blue sun lounger. We see exposed, tanned skin and it looks baking hot with the tropical sun at its zenith, directly overhead at mid-day. Carnival was a pioneer in the concept of cheaper and shorter cruises. Its ships are known for their Las Vegas decor and entertainment. The line calls its ships The Fun Ships. The MS Ecstasy is a Fantasy class cruise ship featuring two pools, whirlpools, a variety of dining options, nightclubs, a casino, and duty-free shopping. After Hurricane Katrina, she spent six months in New Orleans serving as quarters for refugees and relief workers. She suffered heavy damage in 1998 after the laundry room in the ship's stern caught fire damaging much of her stern and aft section.

  • Whilst on a cruise aboard the Fun Ship Ecstasy during a voyage from Miami around the Gulf of Mexico, passengers enjoy a sexual game on deck beneath a strong tropical sun. Male contestants have lined up to be inspected by a blindfolded lady wearing a swim suit and painted nails who is required to identify her own husband by feeling his lower body and torso. Howls of laughter emit from the other men as the lady realises that this is indeed her own spouse who stands on a chair, his bulging crotch at chest height. She smiles to herself, still blind beneath a towel and the moment is funny enough for all to enjoy a happy hour of organised entertainment on deck. The Panamanian-registered MS Ecstasy is a 70,367 ton cruise ship carrying 2,052 passengers and 920 crew belonging to Vegas-style Carnival Cruise lines.

  • On a hot afternoon on Calcutta's Maidan, an Indian lady catches a frisbee disc in both hands in front of the glorious Victoria Memorial, the beautiful marble structure built by the British still during the days of the colonial Indian Raj. The lady is lit with golden light and her bottle green sari stands out from a background tree. She grimaces as she stretches to hold on to the frisbee and there are many hundreds of families and groups in the background, nearer to the white, domed building. Built between 1906 and 1921, it is a majestic white marble building at the southern end of the Maidan, a large expansive park in central Calcutta city. Nowadays it is a museum and group activities are being discouraged due to the fears that pollution will damage this fine structure that honours Queen Victoria, then Empress of India.

  • An elderly lady receives a consultation from a professional beautician in the Clinique Bar at World Duty Free in Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5. In a quiet corner of peace and tranquility, the woman's face is examined in detail using a magnifying lens that allows the assistant to see every hair follicle and pore. Amid the busy departures terminal of this international aviation hub, this is a corner of quiet and tranquillity before the woman traveller boards her flight after this few minutes of pampering. The happy woman smiles to the film camera in a portrait on Southend Pier and recorded on a film camera by a relative, an amateur photographer in 1962. The picture shows us a memory of nostalgia in an era from the last century.

  • A woman in her late 20s crouches down to paint the bare wood of a window frame in a Victorian terraced home. Wearing blue work overalls and brandishing a narrow width paint brush with white wood primer on its hairs, the lady works away in a rear room of this house that overlooks similar aged properties in south London, England. The sash-style window is up and open so that fresh air helps dry this coat of paint. Furniture has been cleared from the room - a back of the house upstairs bathroom.

  • A lady office worker trying to enjoy her lunchtime in spring sunshine, ignores a traditional band of Morris Men who gather to begin a St George's Day performance at the church of St. Botolph's without Bishopsgate in the City of London. Wearing white uniforms they jig their traditional dance, a form of English folk dance accompanied by accordion and pipes. It is based on rhythmic stepping and the execution of choreographed figures by a group of dancers. Implements such as sticks, swords, and handkerchiefs may also be wielded by the dancers. In a small number of dances for one or two men, steps are performed near and across a pair of clay tobacco pipes laid across each other on the floor. English records of Morris dancing date back to 1448.

  • An elderly Spanish lady walks towards a strong setting sun that shines through an old medieval street in the beautiful town of Valldemossa in north-west Majorca, one of the Balearic Island. She leans forward, striding with a quick pace while holding a traditional fan called an abanico. Valldemossa is at 400 kilometres above sea level, the highest community on the island and in the middle of the valley of Sierra de Tramuntana. Part of the village goes up into the mountain slope and sits on the slopes of the Tramuntana mountains. The town gained some sort of fame when Polish composer Frederic Chopin came and stayed at the Carthusian monastery (Cartoixa Reial) with his lover George Sand in the winter of 1838-39.

  • A smart elderly lady walks into a late sun on a chilly afternoon on the Kings Road, Chelsea, London, England. Striding past the viewer she has a determined look on her face, a purpose for reaching her destination without delay and oblivious to other influences. Other shoppers are walking in her directionand their faces are also lit by the sunshine but in the background they are less prominant than the woman in the foreground. With so little highlights, this image is full of low-key shadow making it dark and gloomy. Kings Road Chelsea is a chic street that found modern fame during the Sixties when pretty young things paraded their new-found fashion clothing.

  • Sitting among others in long grass a middle-class lady reads the high-circulation Daily Mail newspaper during a lunchtime break at the Chelsea Flower Show, in London England. The front page headline reads 'Icy Blast from the Kremlin' in an echo from the darkest days of the Cold War, when western media fuelled the insatiable appetite for propaganda. But this scene is from May 1989 before the fall of the Berlin Wall and when the eastern states of the Warsaw Pact were still ruled by their Communist masters. Visitors to this annual horticultural event either sit in the cool shade or like this woman who appears comfortable cross-legged in sandals and a summer dress, stays under the hot mid-day sun with her tabloid format paper spread and with her possessions kept in a shoulder bag.
