  • Two ladies pick plants in a field on the outskirts of Brussels in the 1970s. It is overcast but their smiles are bright as the women stand for their portrait picture, taken on a film camera in 1973. Standing in ankle-deep grass in this meadow on the outskirts of the Belbian capital, they look happy with their collection of wildlife. The picture shows us a memory of nostalgia in an era from the last century.

  • Volunteer Guardian Angels patrol the London underground in central London, an experiment in anti-crime in late-80s London. Patrolling the capital's transport system, an Angel stands over two elderly ladies in a dark-lit carriage. The Angels are under the supervision of the organisation's creator Curtis Sliwa, who started the band of youths to help make New York a safer place, - and in London's case in an era before CCTV made travel less secure. The Guardian Angels is a non-profit international volunteer organization of unarmed citizen crime patrollers. The Guardian Angels organization was founded February 13, 1979 in New York City by Curtis Sliwa and has chapters in 15 countries and 144 cities around the world. Sliwa originally created the organization to combat widespread violence and crime on the New York City Subways.

  • The Mr Chelsea Body Beautiful talent competition is held on the Kings Road in London. Entrants are handsome males and girls showing their muscles and well-trimmed bodies. We see hairy chests, pectorals and biceps on-show by these young exhibitionists who parade themselves in the open-air. Slightly behind them there are also two elderly ladies looking like sisters or perhaps twins. They were once beautiful themselves and sit eagerly on a bench against a wall peering at the handsome young men, wishing they were young again. One holds a walking stick and the other grasps a bottle of wine. It is a scene of young and old, of youth and ageing beauty.

  • Five elderly women on-lookers are lined against a wall outside the famous Ascot race course on Ladies' Day, the annual event on the English sporting and social calendar in June. Each are standing in order of size, from tallest (who holds a Tesco supermarket bag) to smallest and watch as a man dressed in formal tails walks towards an entrance gate for the private members' enclosure. We see the two sides of the class system but it is a humerous scene. There is good nature between the two groups with smiles exchanged with one couple but discomfort from those behind.

  • Pensioners on holiday - or on a daytrip - at the Nofilk seaside town of Great Yarmouth wait for a friend beneath a wide banner advertising a Karaoke event at the venue behind them that night. There are four old ladies and one man in the group, all dressed in summer clothes for their day at the beach. Only the gentleman is looking our way as the women are otherwise occupied. There is litter at their feet and garish posters are behind them. The man is outnumbered, a gender ratio of 4 to 1.

  • Four ladies are seen from behind wearing Union Jack hats and waving Britain's national flag flags. It is the Queens' Golden Jubilee celebrations in London's Hyde Park and this scene of patriotic fun is common when crowds gather to acknowledge their monarch's long reign over her people. The women's faces are obscured but there is a blurred face of an unknown singer leading a concert of rousing songs - perhaps Rule Britannia - that excites the crowd still in the semi-darkness. It is the end of a long day of marches and appearances of Her Majesty on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, marking her 50th year on the throne.

  • Two ladies are seen from a very low angle as they parade down an avenue during the Spring Feria in Seville, Spain. Beneath dozens of colourful decorations which hang from cables above their heads, they walk holding drinks laughing gaily. They are both dressed in traditional red and white flamenco dresses with red and yellow scarves around their necks. It is a lively event that Seville holds annually in the vast fairground area on the far bank of the Guadalquivir River. Rows of temporary marquee tents, or casetas, host families, corporations and friends into the late hours during the April Fair which begins begins two weeks after the Semana Santa, or Easter Holy Week in the Andalusian capital.

  • Five friends walk briskly along a street in the southern Polish city of Krakow. One of the ladies is a bride and has either just married the your man whose arm she's holding, or she is hurrying to her wedding ceremony and the friends around her are all on their way to the church. Another girl is probably her bridesmaid, dressed in frilly blue. There are bouquets of fresh flowers and this is a very special day for these young people who are delighted to attend this wedding somewhere in this city where so many atrocities occurred during the second world war. The picture looks dated from the 1980s but it's the summer of 1990, when Poland was about to undergo massive changes economically and culturally. Their clothing looks very east European for that era and are about to stride past a unisex hairdresser's shop window where a model's face stares to the viewer.
