Twenty-three per cent of Northumberland National Park is owned by the Ministry of Defence and used as a military training area though they encourage as much access to the area as possible. Sometimes areas are cordoned off from the public for military exercises. Visitors are welcome outside of live firing times if no red flags are displayed. When military exercises are happening, red flags around the boundaries indicate restricted access. Visitors are told not to pick up, kick or remove any object and not to stray off the public rights of way or tarmac roads.

  • Sheep up for auction kept behind fencing to avoid the spread of diseases at the ancient annual Priddy Fair in Somerset, England. A sign issued by the government's disease control policy, unauthorised visitors are forbidden to enter the catle pens, avoiding the spread of epidemics like Foot and Mouth. According to tradition, Priddy Sheep Fair moved from Wells in 1348 because of the Black Death, although evidence has been found of a Fair being held at Priddy before that. There is a local legend, which says that as long as the hurdle stack shelter remains in the village, so will the Fair.

  • A union jack flies proudly in front of tall Leylandii trees in a garden at Horning on the Norfolk Broads. As a statement of British territorial ownership in sububia where an Englishman's home is his castle is reflected also in his garden and the high boundaries between him and his neighbour, with the blight of the evergreen - a screen of privacy and supremacy. Even on sites of relatively poor culture, plants have been known to grow to heights of 15 metres (49 ft) in 16 years. Their rapid, thick growth means they are sometimes used to enforce privacy, but such use can result in disputes with neighbours whose own property becomes overshadowed.[

  • A door painted with a high-gloss red finish is closed and a warning sign for privacy is hung to deter outsiders from entering. This briefing room belongs to the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team Lincolnshire, who use these offices as headquarters and administrative centre for the 90-plus displays they perform a year. The pilots' crew room is screened off from visitors and the notice says "Stop, do not enter, briefing in progress" to isolate the serious business of briefing and de-briefing. Performance appraisals before and after a training flight or air show displays are intense. Matters of safety and perfection are discussed so the aviators politely close the door unless visitors have been invited in to hear about the features of the next flight or afterwards, the gentlemanly exchanges providing analysis and frank views.

  • Air passengers exit and enter a transit train at Chicago O'Hare airport, Illinois USA. They pull suitcases behind them as they negotiate the airport terminal transport system that takes them across the sprawling complex of terminals and tunnels. A large central yellow traffic arrow saying OUT is most prominent telling arriving people to keep in the middle, allowing those departing to enter the carriage from the sides. There is a slight blur to the picture showing the hurrying nature of modern air travel, vastly different from the pioneering days of flight for only the socially elite. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903..

  • Crewman looks out of wondow during flight on a Lockheed Martin-built C-130J Hercules airlifter. Externally similar to the classic Hercules in general appearance, the J model sports considerably updated technology. These differences include new Rolls-Royce AE 2100 D3 turboprops with Dowty R391 composite scimitar propellers, digital avionics (including Head-Up Displays (HUDs) for each pilot). During more than 50 years of service the Hercules family has the longest continuous production run of any military aircraft in history. Strategic, automated low-level airdrops keep 60 road transport vehicles and up to 120 supple troops off hostile roads using only three flight crew.
