  • A middle-aged woman walks along a gloomy street in Toxteth, Liverpool, England. Passing a boarded-up greengrocer that probably once served the local community, the lady strides past its sealed window and the name of its past owner, obviously proud of her business' quality in an otherwise run-down area. Toxteth saw serious rioting in 1981 and the legacy of social-deprivation ever since meant a breakdown of law and order. Used as the epitome of poor inner-city Britain, it is located to the south of the city and is synonymous with social issues, degradation and poverty with some of the most underprivileged families in the UK. Recently many streets in the worst areas have been demolished including a threat to Beatle Ringo Starr's childhood home.

  • A young girl dressed in a red coat and pink socks walks half-way along a bright yellow stretch of corrugated sheet metal that screens off a derelict block of flats in Toxteth, Liverpool, England. The flats' windows are also partly-boarded up in an area that saw serious rioting in 1981. Toxteth is an inner-city area of Liverpool, Merseyside. It is located to the south of the city and is synonymous with social issues, degradation and poverty with some of the most underprivileged families in the UK. Recently many streets in the worst areas have been demolished including Beatle Ringo Starr's childhood home.

  • Three bathers lie on the shingle in the lee of a groyne, a wooden screen from the fresh breeze that has been written on by unknown people having scrawled their names and a noughts and crosses puzzle written in chalk. One person wears his socks in true English style and the lady in the middle has her bag containing possessions near her head. Above them sits a lifeguard on a pair of high steps, peering along the beach with a pair of binoculars. Meanwhile, a lone seagull wheels around the coastal thermals and is caught between the wooden slats of the groyne.

  • A chunk of prime yellow fin tuna fish steak lies after filleting on a table in a processing factory on the island of Himmafushi, Maldives. The 50kg carcasses have been swimming across the Indian Ocean non-stop since birth and having just been line-caught by freelance boat crews who share profits for only high-quality fish that passes stringent health tests. The tuna has been encased in ice since being landed at sea to keep a low-temperature body core so the workers cut out the prime flesh as quickly as possible before boxing the resulting chunks of steak for export by air to Europe and in particular for customers such as UK's Sainsbury's supermarket. The Sri Lankan butchers are ex-fishermen and widowers, having lost their families during the Tsunami. Using extremely sharp knives, they skillfully remove valuable meat and throw away the rest.

  • A solo teenage player takes a shot at the net on a basketball court at the Cyprea Marine Foods (CMF) processing factory on Himmafushi Island, Maldives in the Indian Ocean. It is dusk near the equator and soon dark. The landscape is barren except for some young trees on the waterfront where two people are walking in the cool tropical air. Seen in the last, darkening light of day, the player leaps upwards and his arm stays where his ball left his hand to roll around the ring. The man is enjoying some leisure time at the end of his working day, possibly an employee of CMF who handle newly-caught tuna fish for export to the EU and the UK's supermarket food industry.

  • A group of young boys play in the calm waters of the Indian Ocean on Meedu Island, in the Republic of the Maldives. The shallows are a safe playground for these kids who swim and splash about in the clear shallows next to two small dhoni boats often used to fish using traditional hand and line, an important source of income for remote communities in this island nation. The sea is perfectly clear blue and the sand coral-white, in jeopardy to rising sea levels as global warming makes sea level locations like this vulnerable to flooding. The Maldives comprise of twenty-six atolls, featuring 1,192 coral islands of which 80 are holiday resorts with 200 inhabited by indigenous communities. This Islamic nation of 298 sq km (115 sq miles), lie seven hundred kilometres (435 miles) south-west of Sri Lanka.

  • With blood and guts on the blue deck, a fisherman from the Maldives hoses down a yellow fin tuna on the floor of a dhoni boat in the Indian Ocean. After clubbing it death, he has removed its respiratory organs with sharp knives and washes it down with a hose. Next it will be plunged into ice containers to cool the flesh, reducing the risk of self-deteriorating flushed blood which renders it unfit for consumption under EU law (its live internal core temperature is 40 degrees centigrade). When as many fish have been caught (often weighing 50kg) before dark using hand and line method, rather than nets, the boat presses on to the processing factory at Himmafushi where they're filleted and boxed for export to Europe and in particular, for UK supermarkets like Sainsbury's.
    maldives281-14-11-2007.jpg
  • Fishermen from the Maldives haul aboard a yellow fin tuna to the deck of a dhoni boat in the Indian Ocean. The tuna has been swimming across the Indian Ocean non-stop since birth but after being dragged up with hooks, the 50kg fish will be clubbed to death by smashing its skull with repeated blows. Next it will be gutted efficiently with sharp knives and immediately plunged into ice containers to cool the flesh, reducing the risk of self-deteriorating flushed blood which renders it unfit for consumption under EU law (its live internal core temperature is 40 degrees centigrade). When as many fish have been caught before dark using hand and line method, rather than nets, the boat presses on to the processing factory at Himmafushi where they're filleted and boxed for export to Europe and in particular, for UK supermarkets like Sainsbury's.
    maldives298-14-11-2007.jpg
  • A fisherman from the Maldives sits making a call on his mobile cell phone on the bow of a dhoni boat which heads along on a calm Indian Ocean. After a hard day's fishing he gazes forward to open sea where an almost uninterrupted view of sea and horizon is seen beyond except for a small island is faintly in view. Even small remote atoll communites in the Maldives have strong phone signals and many also have good Wi-Fi connections. He and his crew have been catching Yellow Fin Tuna in the seas north of the capital Male in this Islamic Republic. Their catch is for export to the EU and in particular, the UK's supermarkets. There is no limit and no obvious destination, just infinity and the thought of tomorrow.

  • David Reynolds (aka Eco) is a long-term activist, campaigner in the peace movement and resident of the Faslane Peace Camp, Scotland. His home of three years is called the Earth Shack and is largely re-cycled from scrap and garbage found locally on rubbish tips. Eco leans against his garden fence holding a mug of coffee this chilly Sunday morning. Signs of his political beliefs adorn the place: CND logos and Peace on Earth statements. His mother was a ?Carnie? (after the word Carnival, someone working on the fairgrounds) so perhaps it?s from her that he more enjoys an alternative outdoor camping lifestyle after a few years in the army. Faslane Peace Camp is a makeshift site alongside Faslane Naval base where Trident nuclear deterrent missiles and submarines dock. The camp has been occupied continuously, in a few different locations, since 1982.

  • A customized caravan sits in the damp woods at the Faslane Peace Camp, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Matt Bury, 52, is one of the camp's 10 full time residents and has been living in this trailer for a year. Painted harlequin-styled diamonds adorn the walls of the van in a personal artistic statement. Calor gas bottles lie on the ground and weeds grow around this semi-permanent site. Faslane Peace Camp is a makeshift political activists' site alongside HM Naval Base Clyde where Trident nuclear deterrent missiles and Vanhuard Class submarines dock. The camp has been occupied continuously, in a few different locations since 12 June 1982. Image taken for the 'UK at Home' book project published 2008.
