  • The message in graffiti lettering "Don't come here they attack you" has been written on a wall outside a house in the Toxteth area of Liverpool, Merseyside England. Flat 1A has a bright red-painted door and red bricks in an otherwise poverty-stricken district of this poor inner-city where crime and social deprivation has become the normal way of life for Scouses (someone from Liverpool). We see the red theme carried throughout this image of threat and ill-discipline where survival is clearly hard. These 'back to back' terraced houses have largely been demolished during Liverpool's regeneration during the 60s and 70s though some remain, accommodating unfortunate families on low-income.

  • A man stands on his own on a grassy bank to cut a lonely figure in long grass on an embankment near the tall Canary Wharf tower structure a mile away in the background at Dockland's area of East London. Above the grassy bank at Mudchute, a city farm on London's Isle of Dogs, England, the sky is threatening with gathering clouds but lights still picks out the man against the darkening skyline. He stands with arms folded looking thoughtfully at the ground as if depressed or considering his isolation in the world. It is a seemingly rural location but is, in fact, an area of inner-city London, close to major construction projects, transforming Docklands into a major centre for finance and new housing.

  • Grabbing a quiet few moments in an otherwise busy environment, two people lie in long grass near the tall Canary Wharf tower structure a mile away in the background at Dockland's area of East London. On the grassy bank at Mudchute, a city farm on London's Isle of Dogs, England, the two people have been joined on this war summer afternoon by a small goat who is making its way along, munching at the lush vegetation. It is a seemingly rural location but is, in fact, an area of inner-city London, close to major construction projects, transforming Docklands into a major centre for finance and new housing.

  • Three teenage boys bait their lines in the calm of the River Wandle, one of London's lost rivers that still meanders through inner-city London on its course from Carshalton Pond to the Thames. The three lads are reflected in the ripples of this once-polluted water which was once flushed with the toxins of industry such as tanning factories and breweries. After expensive clean-ups by local authorities, kids like these are once again able to catch trout in the way boys like them would do hundreds of years before the industrial revolutiion fouled many a water course. It is a perfect later-summer afternoon and the sun is shining on waterside reeds and grasses making this a scene of idyllic boyhood and undusturbed lazy dreams.

  • Looking down from above, we see young men who are open-chested and with their suit jackets either beneath their heads or on the grass, three office co-workers stretch out over the lush grass and sunbathe during a hot summer lunchtime in Trinity Square in the City of London, England. One has his paperwork under his head and a can of Coke to quench his thirst. Already tanned, the threesome bask under a hot mid-day sun. Risking sunburn after prolonged solar radiation exposure, they enjoy the inner-city heatwave.

  • A middle-aged woman walks along a gloomy street in Toxteth, Liverpool, England. Passing a boarded-up greengrocer that probably once served the local community, the lady strides past its sealed window and the name of its past owner, obviously proud of her business' quality in an otherwise run-down area. Toxteth saw serious rioting in 1981 and the legacy of social-deprivation ever since meant a breakdown of law and order. Used as the epitome of poor inner-city Britain, it is located to the south of the city and is synonymous with social issues, degradation and poverty with some of the most underprivileged families in the UK. Recently many streets in the worst areas have been demolished including a threat to Beatle Ringo Starr's childhood home.

  • The rotting blue door of a Victorian terraced house now dilapidated and abandoned on the streets of Toxteth, on 14th June 1991, in Liverpool, England. Toxteth is an inner-city area of Liverpool, Merseyside, located to the south of the city and, in the 1990s, was synonymous with social issues, degradation and poverty with some of the most underprivileged families in the UK. Recently many streets in the worst areas have been demolished including Beatle Ringo Starr's childhood home.

  • Two young 'Scouse' girls sit on a telephone junction box and against a brick wall on which there is graffiti and childish scribbles. They are near a back alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England. The older, taller girl is of Asian-descent and the younger is White British who hides her face with her top. Both are facing other activity in this inner-city street where there are 'back to back' houses in a poor area, South of the city centre and home to deprived families. Few of these back-to-backs exist after being cleared to allow construction of high-rise tower-blocks and flats.

  • Looking up towards majestically tall 100 year-old mature Ash trees and blue skies, the sun glints off a window pane in an Edwardian age semi-detached house on Ruskin Park, Denmark Hill, SE24 (its post code) South London England. It is a beauitiful winter afternoon in this inner-city suburban district of Britain's capital, approximately 5 miles south from the River Thames. A couple are walking their dogs past an elegant line of period homes that were completed in 1908, the age of innovative building in the new 20th Century. The properties overlook the borough park named after John Ruskin, the renowned artist and commentator who lived in nearby Herne Hill. It looks an affluent area, a prosperous location to invest in a mortgage in uncertain times with market prices falling during the credit crunch and recession.

  • Late at night in a South London street, two young children remain fast asleep in the back of their parents' car. It is a dark despite pools of light falling from street lighting that throw heavy shadows beneath other vehicles. The silhouettes of large ash trees can be seen against the city skyline. The interior lights in the car are switched on to reveal the sleeping childrens' faces. An older girl has her mouth wide open while her younger brother is seen in profile but both are peacefully unaware that they have arrived home after a long drive fro the countryside to the inner-city. From a personal documentary project entitled "Next of Kin" about the photographer's two children's early years spent in parallel universes. Model released.

  • Two young boys concentrate on piling plastic bottle crates on top of each other making towers that echo the tall Canary Wharf tower structure a mile away in the background at Dockland's area of East London. On the grassy bank at Mudchute, a city farm on London's Isle of Dogs, the pile of crates is untidy and unstable making them lean at odd angles making the boys hold on to their building projects. They are dressed for a summer afternoon's activity in a seemingly rural location but which is, in fact, an area of inner-city London.

  • The shadows of tree branches across the boarded-up entrance of All Hallows, an inner-city church on Copperfield Street, on 30th January 2018, in the south London borough of Southwark, England. All Hallows Church Southwark was designed by George Gilbert Scott Junior and built in 1879-80 in Copperfield Street south of the river. The church suffered bomb damage on two occasions in WW2, in addition to being gutted by a landmine where it remained a relative ruin. It was not until 1957 that any attempt was made to salvage the bombed church, but due to the poor state of the surviving remains, the main structure and northern parts of the building had to be demolished.

  • From an aerial perspective, we look down on the green algae and a lone rower who is sculling upstream of the River Lea (Also Lee) in east London, England. The words No Fishing have been painted by hand on a old Victorian lock that once served as a navigable route for barges to negotiate this inner-city waterway. With its source in the Chiltern Hills and ending in the River Thames, this stretch of river has seen development from Saxon times through to the building of the 2012 Olympic site at Stratford. Meticulously placing his oars in the water, he parts the organic growth with the slim boat's hull and looks over his shoulder to check his distance and angle as he nears the lock's concrete spans.

  • Near the junction of the 400 to Buckhead, the 401 highway divides and splits during afternoon rush-hour traffic which slows and builds up so that vehicles and cars back-up as they head home and out of Downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The inner median is coned off during some construction work which slows the traffic even more. Crossing the 5-lane road comes a train of Atlanta's own mass-transit system, the MARTA network and it approaches the overpass with care. We see the infrastructure of a modern metropolis at the busiest time of day when the exodus to get home puts the roads and feeder lanes under the most pressure. Fortunately, the weather is fine with good visibility making drivers' journeys a little shorter and more tolerable but it shows too America's habit and dependency on car culture.
