  • Wearing a company wastecoat and blue rubber gloves, the uniform of a Holiday Inn employee, a man of Black ethnicity bends forward to wipe the glass revolving doors at the entrance of this hotel in Paris. Nearby is the man's trolley containing janitorial cleaning products such as a mop and bucket, towels, cloth rolls, atomiser sprays, detergents and tissues needed to maintain the high standards of this motel chain. Coincidentally, a customer is also bending down to re-arrange something in her baggage and leaning at the same angle as the cleaner.

  • At the famous Butlins holiday camp in the Somerset town of Minehead, a poolside lifeguard overlooks the main pool from an overhead bridge. Behind him a monorail transports holidaymakers around the resort. Wearing the large letter B for Butlins on his red vest, the young lad sucks on his whistle held between his lips and prominently, the words 'Made in England' have been tattooed on his left shoulder - as if a statement for his patriotic ideals but also for those of Butlins - an institution for the British working classes who after the war had the opportunity to spend their summers at special resorts in seaside towns that provided entertainment and fun. Butlins and other camp businesses went into decline when the masses preferred Spanish vacations but have since been revived as travel costs have again soared and holidays at home are once again popular.

  • The A30 highway runs deep into the South-West of England - from Exeter in the county of Devon to Penzance in the narrow peninsular of Cornwall. On certain dates in the calendar routes like this, near the Cornish town of Bodmin, England, come to a standstill from the huge volume of cars and private vehicles, all heading down to costal resorts and better weather. We see here a huge tailback of traffic that is queueing along one side of the British dual-carriageway (two lanes in each direction) from close-up to the distance down and up a natural hill in this undulating landscape. The cars have edged forward are nose to tail for hours in summer heatwave and tempers fray, children arguing in the back and an otherwise relaxed holiday mood suddenly goes bad.

  • An aerial view of unidentified islands seen from a regional aircraft passing overhead the atolls and islands to the north Malé, capital of the Indian Ocean Republic of the Maldives. We see the perfectly clear blue sea surrounding the islands and tiny sandbanks of white coral beach sand, all of which are in jeopardy of rising sea levels as global warming makes sea level locations like this vulnerable to being overwhelmed. The only sign of life is the tiny island in the bottom right of frame where holiday resort accommodation ring this dot in the ocean. The Maldives comprise of twenty-six atolls, featuring 1,192 coral islands of which 80 are holiday resorts with 200 inhabited by indigenous communities. • Beneath an ugly breeze block concrete wall, a couple are enjoying their holiday in the English seaside town of Paignton, Devon. Sitting in striped deckchairs they are both curiously touching their own genital areas between their legs, perhaps both scratching an itch. The lady in sunglasses wearing a floral dress on the left looks guilty while her topless male partner appears more amused by the interruption. In this depressing corner of Paignton, also called the English Riviera, the grey construction behind them is a grim reminder of what it is often like to holiday in one's own home country where few exotic luxuries are found. Such squalor is unfortunately common around the UK and a reason why people take their vacations abroad. Even the grass below them is bare with weeds growing and soil at the foot of the wall.

  • Young men in drag perform to an audience as part of their Club 18-30 holiday experience to Ibiza, Spain. A tour rep encourages the men to push their inibitions to the limit but with a reputation for 'Sun, Sand and Sex' the 18-30 holiday formula has been labelled as parents' worth nightmare. From from the company's web site however the fantasy sounds less riotous: "There comes a time in life when you need to do it for yourself. A time to break free and break the mould. To explore, leave the map at home and find yourself. To find that one moment and make it last a lifetime. That time is now. Sunrise to sunset. Sunset to sunrise. This is the time of your life. Love every single second of it."

  • An elderly couple sit in peace on a quiet beach in the seaside resort of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. In a classic English beach holiday scene, the husband and wife relax, reclining in a pair of deckchairs at a kiosk that dispenses these quaintly British beach chairs. A sign telling other holidaymakers to collect and pay for their time in them appears on the freshly-painted clap-board wall. As the lazy completes word puzzles in her magazine, the gentleman reads his regular copy of the Daily Mirror tabloid newspaper. He is tanned, perhaps spent his summer tending his garden back home but here on holiday, they both have the chance to spend some time together away from home, in a resort known for its beaches and coastal adventures.

The holidaymakers are staying in 17 acres of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, experiencing the peace and tranquillity of tipi and yurt camping in their own private, secluded valley - an ever-increasingly popular holiday adventure that is both green and carbon neutral since they are not using electricity for heating or cars to travel. It is also a stress-free lifestyle, away from the pressures of work and urban life, where travellers can unwind safe in the knowledge they are helping the environment.

She is staying at this small camp site where tipis and yurts is the theme of this eco-friendly and carbon-neutral holiday.

  • As a boy swings from a tree, canoeists enjoy a day's paddling down the River Lesse, Belgium's prime kayaking destination in the southern Ardennes region. At Anseremme, south of the town of Dinant, the adventurers negotiate their way down 21 km of gentle fresh water through the beautiful Belgian gorges and forests. Before plunging down a weir (Barrage in French) near a camp site they are pelted by splashing water from campers in the water. The red canoes have been hired for the day from 'Kayaks Ansiaux' and another rival company who rent blue boats. Families and young people make the slow journey along the Lesse, Paddles match the colours of the canoes and they all glint off a strong afternoon sun during the high-season holiday month. Most commonly routes start in Han and go all the way down to Dinant, where the Lesse meets the Meuse.

  • Aboard the Carnival cruise ship Ecstasy, a father and son are practicing wearing life-preservers during the first few hours of their voyage from Miami around the Gulf of Mexico. They and every passenger on-board are being instructed by members of the ship's crew to muster (gather) in specific locations around the vessel before heading further out to sea. Under international law, everyone on a holiday ship like this needs to know what do in the event of an emergency at sea so well-organised drills are rehearsed on deck. The baby looks uncomfortable wrapped in his life vest but sucks on a pacifier dummy. The father looks relaxed in the knowledge that their lives are not risk on this occasion. The Panamanian-registered MS Ecstasy is a 70,367 ton cruise ship carrying 2,052 passengers and 920 crew belonging to Vegas-style Carnival Cruise lines.

  • Four water-logged deckchairs have been abandoned on a wet Brighton's East Pier in East Sussex. It is Spring but the rain has driven away holidaymakers from this desolate and depressing spot from England's South coast seaside resort. We see a gloomy, grey sky and empty horizon with neither people, nor water activity but the stripes of the railings are echoed in the reflective wooden planks on this Victorian-era pier and of the fabric on the deckchairs. We wonder who might have sat on these chairs and where they might be now? This landscape might be the antithesis of a holiday poster that repels rather than attracts tourists to this location.

We see the perfectly clear blue sea surrounding a tiny flat island of white coral beach sand, ringing tropical vegetation and scrub that is in jeopardy to rising sea levels as global warming makes sea level locations like this vulnerable to flooding. The Maldives comprise of twenty-six atolls, featuring 1,192 coral islands of which 80 are holiday resorts with 200 inhabited by indigenous communities. This Islamic nation of 298 sq km (115 sq miles), lie seven hundred kilometres (435 miles) south-west of Sri Lanka..

  • Three laughing ladies hold up their sticks of rock beneath a seaside character on the seafront at Blackpool, on 18th July 1993, Blackpool, Lancashire, England. In 1887, sugar-boiling factory owner Ben Bullock bought some plain stick candy band had the idea of putting ‘Blackpool Rock’ through the centre of the rock. Now a major industry in the holiday season in Britain and many seaside towns have their versions with their own names running through the rock. Modern seaside rock is thicker, about 1 inch, and more solid than the original form. Its sugar content is nowadays a reason not to buy as much, the adverse effects on teeth from sugar and colouring by the confectionary industry being a main reason for its decline.
