  • A data car with 'Here Technologies' and with roof-mounted cameras, drives past a multi-coloured bike locked to a post in a sidestreet in London's West End, on 29th April 2019, in London, England. Over the next three decades, as NAVTEQ and Nokia, we’ve built a legacy in mapping technology. They now employ 8,000 workers.

  • An elderly couple sit in peace on a quiet beach in the seaside resort of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. In a classic English beach holiday scene, the husband and wife relax, reclining in a pair of deckchairs at a kiosk that dispenses these quaintly British beach chairs. A sign telling other holidaymakers to collect and pay for their time in them appears on the freshly-painted clap-board wall. As the lazy completes word puzzles in her magazine, the gentleman reads his regular copy of the Daily Mirror tabloid newspaper. He is tanned, perhaps spent his summer tending his garden back home but here on holiday, they both have the chance to spend some time together away from home, in a resort known for its beaches and coastal adventures.

  • A lone pensioner sits in one deckchair among many before an outside concert at at Kenwood House, North London. Set in leafy grounds beside Hampstead Heath, these grounds were remodelled by Robert Adam between 1764 and 1779. English Heritage host Summer concerts here and families and music fans spend war summer evenings listening to opera, classical or series of themed performances by visiting artists and groups. Here is also the source of one of London's lost rivers, The Fleet which rises here and flows downhill into the city where it becomes part of the sewer system, emerging in the Thames at Blackfriars. • Looking skyward is a USAF pilot learning how to vector in a potential helicopter rescue as part of a special US Air Force (USAF) survival course (see also Corbis image 42-18212808) Fairchild AFB, Spokane, Washington State. The man has been taught to use a special escape and evasion (E &E) techniques to visiting air crew whose flying careers depend on passing this rigorous week of survival instruction. Should they be downed in hostile territory for example, they will need every skill learned here to survive possibly weeks being hunted in the wilderness so trapping and preparing fresh meat for human consumption is important for survival. Here the crewman has let off a red smoke canister to mark his location for the friendly aircraft to see.

  • Two shipbuilders chat beneath the heavy lifting cranes at the Polish Gdansk shipyard - once known as the Lenin Shipyard but still the largest of its kind in modern Poland. The grimy and hazardous working conditions make for a dangerous environment in which to work and the two men in the foreground and those behind, wear bright yellow hard hats, protecting them from steel edges and rusting machinery. Here in 1980 the union Solidarity (Solidarnosc) was conceived and was partly responsible for a growing dissent against Communist rule, ultimately contributing towards the fall of the Berlin Wall. Lech Walesa started his political career as an electrical technician here, going on to lead Solidarity and then to become President of a democratic Poland. Today Gdansk is a major industrial city and shipping port.

  • Two film crews record a USAF (United States Air Force) aviator, in training during week-long survival course held at the Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Washington, on 6th August 1995, in Spokane, Washington, USA. The course is aimed at highy-trained personnel conducting a survival, escape and evasion course which combat pilots and air crew need to pass before rejoining their units for real-time warfare. Held in hangars and the surrounding forests, it forms part of an extensive physical and psychological assessment of young aviators on active service. In the future any one of them may be shot down behind enemy lines and need to use the lessons passed-on here to help facilitate their rescue by US forces. One pilot who passed this course in 1991, himself a Spokane-born boy, was F-16 pilot Scott O'Grady. He put his skills learned here to the test while evading Serb forces before being airlifted to safety and a hero's Presidential welcome.

  • A window cleaner leathers down a freshly washed window of a terraced house in The Dingle district of Liverpool, England. Next door, the neighbour's favourite colour is obviously red - the colour of his home, his car and his favourite football team too - Liverpool FC. There is a sense of pride here, unlike other areas of the city where derelict streets are still common. Here, the paintwork is fresh, the cars are spotless and the red house has a burglar alarm on the wall. The sign there is a degree of wealth in this neighbourhood.

  • The once busy Rialto Community Centre in Liverpool, England, is now a shell of a building, its windows smashed and caretaker's name painted over as if erased from those employed here to give the local population a sense of belonging. No-one is left here, the impoverished people having moved out for a better life elsewhere.

  • Remains of old home called Sheila's Cottage, last inhabited by the local milk maid of the same name in the 1930s on Ulva, Isle of Mull, Scotland. Ulva is home to Sheila's Cottage, a restored thatched croft house once the home of Sheila MacFadyen. Here you can learn about the famous visitors to Ulva, Boswell and Dr Johnson, Lachlan Macquarie and Sir Walter Scott. Beatrix Potter was a regular visitor to the island and found inspiration for many of her books here. The grandparents of the famous explorer and missionary David Livingstone once lived on Ulva and the walk up to Livingstone's croft is a must.
