  • During a street party in London's East End, the young men have decided to parade outside with their flag to show their devotion to their local club. One reaches down to pick up a patriotic hat during the celebrations commemorating the 50th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day on 6th May 1995. West Ham was founded in 1895 as Thames Ironworks FC and reformed in 1900 as West Ham United. In 1904 the club relocated to their current Boleyn Ground stadium and will take over the 2012 Olympic stadium. In the week near the anniversary date of May 8, 1945, when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Germany. Street parties now - as they did in 1945 - played a large part in the country's patriotic well being.

  • St Columba's church at Gruline, Isle of Mull, Scotland. The building of St Columba’s at Gruline was begun in June 1873, the cost being divided between Captain Parr of Killiechronan and Colonel Greenhill-Gardyne of Glenforsa House. The church was completed in December 1873 and the first service held there in June 1874, with 26 people present for the English service in the morning and 47 for the Gaelic service in the evening. The church and the adjacent burial ground were consecrated on Sunday 4th July 1875 by Bishop George Richard Mackarness (1823 – 1883). It was the first church to be consecrated in Mull for some centuries. There are memorial plaques to these two benefactors on the walls of the nave. In 1893 the Gruline Estate was sold to William and Mary Melles. Much of the woodwork in the church was carved by Mary Melles, including the pulpit and reredos. Daphne Margaret Gough, Mary Melles’s grand-daughter was the only person, it is believed, to have been baptised, confirmed, married and have her ashes buried at Saint Columba’s.(http://www.grulinechurch.org.uk)

  • Looking downwards from a high vantage point on a hillside, we see one mountain-biker leading a second cyclist as they traverse across a sunlit mountainside near the hamlet of Masecha in the parish of Triesenberg, Liechtenstein. The late afternoon sun is low across the valley and there is a haze that partly obscures and refracts light over the distant landscape. There is snow on the distant mountain peaks but the countryside has the brown look of a snowless winter. Far off villages and hamlets hug the hillsides and golden light floods the scene. The tiny landlocked Principality of Liechtenstein is bordered by the Alpine countries of Austria and Switzerland and is a winter sports resort, though best known as a tax haven, attracting companies worldwide to register their assets in secrecy. .

  • Decorator and part-time chimney sweep Alan Squires prepares to apply another coat of emulsion paint to the exterior walls of a cottage called Burnside in the tiny hamlet of Hallin, Waternish, on the Isle of Skye, Scottish Highlands. With his shadow looming large on the newly-painted off-white pebbledash that is rendered a warm orange in the low sunlight, Alan walks with his long roller after a day's decorating in this beautiful place near Dunvegan. Alan is an Englishman who came to Skye in 1987 for the community spirit. "everybody knows everybody' he says though admits that southerners come from the south in search of an idyllic lifestyle but harsh winters often send them back to warmer climates. Alain's fresh paint therefore needs to dry before winter weather blows in from the Atlantic. Image taken for the 'UK at Home' book project published 2008.

  • Leaning against the side wall of the eighteenth-century Stein Inn in the tiny Loch-side hamlet of Stein, Waternish, on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, a road-racing bicycle stands beneath a prominent three-letter sign saying 'Inn'. The image is in shadow and therefore monotone, with little colour except for the faint blue that is seen above from a fading sky. The wall is painted white and the word in block capitals is in black. The image is clean and simple without confusing elements or messages. The Inn itself is the oldest on Skye and is one of renowned travel writer's Alastair Sawday's special places to stay and which boasts 99 Malt Whiskies behind the counter.

  • Across the calm waters of a Scottish bay, isolated houses and crofts sit before the dramatic Cuillin Mountains that rise up in the distance on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. Sunlight from unusually fine weather spreads across this beautiful landscape seen from the road to Dunvegan, near the hamlet of Harlosh. Farming practices have changed irreversably in a generation and many southerners have English accents rather than that of native Scots islanders as city dwellers from the far south seek an alternative to urban lifestyles. The weather can have adverse effects on those unprepared for such wild conditions, especially during harsh winters when violent storms batter these Atlantic coasts. But old crofts have been converted to bed and breakfast homes, catering for tourist visitors who adore this form of idyllic escapism.
