  • On a bright summer afternoon, a young spoiled girl shows-off by riding her favourite motorized Barbie trike along The Parade, the main promenade in the north Welsh seaside town of Llandudno, Wales. Wearing a bright pink helmet and travelling on the matching pink toy bike, she trundles along with the low-tide coast over her left shoulder. Barbie is a best-selling fashion doll launched in 1959 and produced by Mattel, Inc. The brand's merchandising reaches far and wide to countries and cultures around the world and this little girl seems to be the happiest on the beach, enjoying a generous present perhaps from a parent. She is the exact age that Mattel are targeting when they market these toys to accompany their dolls and accessories though the industry has come under fire for its controversial stereotyping of gender and subtle sexuality.

  • "Crooked Lady." A twelve month-old girl who has recently learned to walk proudly strides past an elderly lady with balancing arms outstretched while at the Dulwich Show in South London. There is a marked difference between the youthful, upright posture of the young girl to the hunched and bent stance of the old woman who stands supporting herself on a brolley. It is a picture that compares youth with old age, the delight that a person of later years shows to a child whose life reaches far ahead. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • "Homo erectus." At the exact moment that a young human being walks for the first time, an eleven month-old girl infant conquers her fear and takes her first tentative upright unaided steps. After months of building lower leg strength by pushing and leaning against household objects, she now leaves the protective hands of a delighted but nervous mother who relishes the joyous moment of her offspring's great achievement. The girl's legs and hips help propel her forward motion, naturally making her an upright bi-pedal species. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

On a labour ward at Kings College Hospital, London, a new-born baby girl has been temporarily separated from her mother and placed uncomfortably in a small weighing dish, minutes after taking her first breaths, to record her birth-weight, recording in old imperial pounds and ounces rather than modern metric grams and kilo units. The midwife has clamped a plastic seal on the child's umbilical cord wound which eventually dries and falls off. The crying girl has a mass of black hair but whose ethnicity is caucasian. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • Young Nepali boys admire a young girl on an army walk along Himalayan path during recruitment to the British Gurkha Regiment. This recruitment test for the Gurkha Regiment is part of a tough endurance series to find physically perfect specimens for British army infantry training. For example they will need to perform 25 straight-kneed sit-ups at a 45° slant both within 60 seconds to pass. 60,000 boys aged between 17-22 (or 25 for those educated enough to become clerks or communications specialists) report to designated recruiting stations in the hills each November, most living from altitudes ranging from 4,000-12,000 feet. After initial selection, 7,000 are accepted for further tests from which 700 are sent down here to Pokhara in the shadow of the Himalayas. Only 160 of the best boys succeed in the journey to the UK. The Gurkhas have been supplying youth for the British army since the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

  • Behind their horsebox, a dedicated mother puts the finishing touches to her daughter's hair at a gymkhana in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Wearing regulation jodhpurs, tie and hairnet, the young girl is almost ready to mount her pony and hopefully earn winning rosettes. The word gymkhana is an Indian Raj term that referred to a place where sporting events took place to test the skill of the competitors. In the UK and east coast of the US, the term gymkhana now almost always refers to an equestrian event for riders on horses, often with the emphasis on children's participation (such as those organised here by the Pony Club). Gymkhana classes include timed speed events such as barrel racing, keyhole, keg race (also known as "down and back"), flag race, and pole bending.

  • Seen from a hillside opposite, with the clear blue backdrop of the snow-covered Himalayan mountain peaks, a Nepalese family crouch on the hilltop to rest during a family walk from their community village near Gorkha, Central Nepal. In the middle of the picture, a young girl twirls and dances across the clearing as her parents and siblings watch, drawfed by the powerfully- dominant range of natural features that form part of the highest altitudes on earth although Gorkha is only 3281 feet (about 1000 meters) above sea level. These peoples' homes cling to the sides of impressive mountains that draw tens of thousands of travellers to this region to trek the paths and conservation sanctuaries of this fast-developing Buddhist and Hindu Kingdom.

  • It is late on a summer Somerset evening and light is fading towards bedtime for children. Clutching a small bunch of daisies, a five year-old girl gazes at one of her flowers as if held in a trance. Standing in a meadow belonging to her grandfather, she holds up a single stem and twirls it around in her fingers to see its shape and sense its smell. About to climb over a gate in the background, her younger brother is having an adventure of his own, standing on the metal horizontal part of the frame, holding on with one hand. It is a tranquil scene of childhood innocence, of long summer days and summer holidays. From a personal documentary project entitled "Next of Kin" about the photographer's two children's early years spent in parallel universes. Model released.

  • A four year-old girl plays some sort of religious role-play game - perhaps an angel or the Virgin Mary - but what do see is her age of innocence as she wears an NHS blanket like a shawl over her head and draped over her arms like a Christian icon. Next to her is her 18 month-old baby brother who has learned to drink his warm milk from a plastic bottle, recently coming to like both breast and formula milk. Together they look at something that is interesting out of frame. The viewer looks up at the two siblings from a low angle to see them tall against the corniced ceiling of their South London home. From a personal documentary project entitled "Next of Kin" about the photographer's two children's early years spent in parallel universes. Model released.
