  • It is 1985 and a farmer walks along a line of long, combustible straw and with a pitchfork and smouldering straw, sets fire to the organic material in an Essex field, southern England. It is late summer and the harvested corn has left behind short stubble which the farmer sets ablaze. This now restricted practice of destroying cereal straw and stubble by flame was stopped by the introduction of The Crop Residues (Burning) Regulations of 1993 which now restricts farmers on burning crop materials, including residues of oilseed rape, field beans and peas, except in very limited circumstances, e.g. for disease control where a plant health order has been served. The burning of straw and stubble also deprives the soil of valuable organic material and releases greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. ..

Holding on to a football, they're laughing at the antics of unseen school friends, they enjoy the summer's afternoon in the English Midlands.

  • In a field at the town of Boofzheim in the eastern French Alsace region, an elderly Frenchman harvests some of his self-grown carrots crop. Having left his old bicycle standing at the kerb of a narrow access road and in front of a field full of maturing maize, he bends down with much effort to dig in his fork or spade into the rich Alsace earth and lift out his vegetables to take home. This landscape is typically French or German (Alsace borders the western side of Germany and saw much tragic action in WW2) where maize is a nutritious foodstuff for cattle and also for ducks and geese who are force-fed it locally in the making of fois gras and pate.

  • A farmer ploughs his field using a Ford TW-25 tractor in Lincolnshire, England. The large hydraulically-driven machine drives over the land with its plough towed behind over hard-looking ground bought by a local dealer called Sharmans of Grantham, the nearest town. The word Ploughman is on the tractor's front, perhaps a nickname for this local landowner. An escarpment rises in the background towards a farmhouse on its ridge.

  • In mid-day heat of the arid Arizona desert, a complete set of main landing gear undercarriage stands upright amid a field of similar items from airliners at the storage facility at Davis Monthan, Tucson. Here, the fate of the world's retired civil airliners is decided by age or cooling economy. Cannibalised for still-working parts or recycled for scrap, their aluminium is worth more than their sum total. Elsewhere, assorted aircraft wrecks sit abandoned in the scrub minus their bellies, legs or wings like dying birds. After a lifetime of safe commercial flight, wings are clipped and cockpits sliced apart by huge guillotines, cutting through their engineering. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.

The young lady gazes skyward as the swing takes her on an upward trajectory, the sun sinking behind distant trees, a scene of splendid inner-peace and tranquillity, disturbed only by the creaking of the rope on the tree above that supports her as she rides. She is staying at this small camp site where tipis and yurts is the theme of this eco-friendly and carbon-neutral holiday.

  • With a look of delight on her face, a four year-old girl stamps through fallen snow in a field near her home in Bielefeld, Germany. Wearing a vibrant red bobble hat and matching coat, she smiles towards the viewer with the pleasure of any child enjoying the excitement of fresh snow. Ski or sledge tracks can be seen at her feet but she is the only person in this empty landscape, as if she's walking on her own through the snowy hills. It is the winter of 1967 and the reds are very vibrant and dominant from the Kodachrome film used which also has a wonderful muted blue colour cast in the mid-tones giving the picture a chilly, wintry feel reminiscent of the classic days of early photography when shifts in color gave a faded and dated look.

  • A mountain of slate dominates a rugby field, terraced housing and a church, on 3rd October 2021, in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Gwynedd, Wales. The derelict slate mines around Blaenau Ffestiniog in north Wales were awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2021. The industry’s heyday was the 1890s when the Welsh slate industry employed approximately 17,000 workers, producing almost 500,000 tonnes of slate a year, around a third of all roofing slate used in the world in the late 19th century. Only 10% of slate was ever of good enough quality and the surrounding mountains now have slate waste and the ruined remains of machinery, workshops and shelters have changed the landscape for square miles.

  • Peering comically over a hedgerow, a Guernsey cow looks on in a field on the small British-owned Channel Island. Renowned for the rich flavour of its milk, as well as its hardiness and docile disposition descended from two breeds brought over from nearby France (Isigny cattle from Normandy and the Froment du Léon from Brittany) the 450 to 500 kg Guernsey produces around 6,000 litres per cow per year. Its milk has a golden colour due to an exceptionally high content of beta carotene, a source of Vitamin A, which helps reduce the risks of certain cancers. The milk also has a high butterfat content of 5% and a high protein content of 3.7% making it deliciously creamy. The island of Guernsey is divided into ten parishes and along with its larger and more commercial Jersey, is situated in the warm English Channel, nearer to French than the English coast.
