  • On the eve of transfer of law in Hong Kong from the UK to China, construction workers in Central Hong Kong carry on their tasks during a monsoonal rain shower on the last day of British rule. Some are dressed in yellow waterproof coats and hard hats, we see a British-style sign warning drivers of Men at Work resembling a man holding an umbrella. Lastly, on the right another man on a wall, also holding an brolley. In the foreground a car park sign states that the space is full in red letters and a local authority sign saying "Working for a better environment" is written in Chinese and English lettering. The transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China, referred to as "The Handover" occurred at midnight on June 30, 1997, signifying the end of British rule, and the transfer of legal and financial authority back to China.

The grimy and hazardous working conditions make for a dangerous environment in which to work and the worker wears a protective hood on his head. Here in 1980 the union Solidarity (Solidarnosc) was conceived and was partly responsible for a growing dissent against Communist rule, ultimately contributing towards the fall of the Berlin Wall. • The solitary figure of a man stands on the roof of an office building in downtown Atlanta during a victory parade for the city's baseball team. The man may be a security guard, keeping watch over the streets below as crowds gather to honour the Atlanta Braves Baseball team, after their 1995 World Series win. The figure is in his manmade environment and the high walls and windows of the buildings that make up this metropolis dwarf this tiny human who in the scale and perspective of a modern city looks incongruous, isolated and insignificant.

Operational in 1982, the Thames Barrier is one of the largest movable flood barriers in the world, managed by the UK's Environment Agency. The barrier spans 520 metres across the River Thames near Woolwich, and it protects 125 square kilometres of central London from flooding caused by tidal surges. The barrier has closed over 80 times since the year 2000 with ‘at least 800,000 homes and businesses have protected from tidal surges.

  • A young deer lies dead beside a busy highway on a road near Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Washington State. Very recently run-over but seemingly unharmed, this animal has head injuries and died immediately from a collision with a passing vehicle, such as this heavy articulated lorry which blurrs past this location. This is forested area and the deer's natural habitat but too often wildlife in its natural surroundings violently meets the modern human environment and the animal comes of worst. As a result of the death, the roadkill was taken by members of a US Air Force survival course at their nearby facility and so it formed an unscheduled extra lesson in preparing venison for the pot that night (see Corbis image entitled 'US Air Force survival instructors with recent roadkill').

  • Seen from a position on Southwark Bridge, we look westwards to see an office worker communicating on the telephone while referring to some paperwork. His computer monitor is on the desk next to him and beyond on the south bank, the evening sky is going purple and another office tower block's lights are on and the water of the River Thames is coloured blue. We see the office as a box, a work place where people are often separated from others by walls and partitions, creating an isolating work environment.

  • Mothers swing a child across a filthy puddle in the town of Nova Huta, an industrial Stalinist steel town oin southern Poland..In filthy industrial streets, the kids look undernourished in this scene of impoverished, Communist dereliction. It is horribly depressing and unhealthy place to grow up and these children are pale and yet seem happy, with smiles on their faces. The famous steel works can be seen reflected in the puddle before them. After the war, Stalin decided to build an industrial Communist fantasy just outside Krakow: a model town and immense steelworks of the future. The steelworks was named after Lenin and the town would be called Nowa Huta - or, the new steel mill. At its peak, 27,000 people worked at the Lenin Steelworks. But Solidarity grew strong forcing strikes over pay and recognition over their union. Today, it is an economic and ecological disaster area.

  • On its regular morning walk and wearing a matching red coat as its owner, a small dog exercises in Holmead Road in the experimental community village of Poundbury, Dorset, England. As the mutt looks at the camera, the man waits for him to stop sniffing around before moving on. The pair stand on crunchy gravel, a deterrent for would-be thieves who might be tempted to this small town where middle-class residents live. Poundbury is the visionary model village that Charles, Prince of Wales sought to develop in 1993 as a successful and pioneering town near Dorchester, built on land owned by his own Duchy of Cornwall, challenging otherwise poor post-war trends in town planning and to some extent following the New Urbanism concept from the US except that the design influences are European..

A mining town known formerly as Hindenburg until 1945, under Stalinist thought, miners were considered a "working class elite" and were rewarded with higher wages and better social benefits but after communism, Zabrze has a high rate among mother of Ovarian Cancer because of the pollution, caused by the large concentration of industry, the triangle of land between Zabrze, Chorzów, and Bytom has locally been known as 'death triangle'. Since the collapse of communism in 1989, the environmental situation has steadily been improving due the restructuring of the Silesian industry although more than 250,000 jobs have been lost in coal mining since the reintroduction of capitalism. At the same time, enterprises are enjoying enormous profits.
