  • As winter fog lifts, the waters of the River Thames clear to reveal an eerie landscape of industrial river life and architecture at Gravesend, Kent England. It is late-morning and in the hazy distance on the northern river bank, steam clouds near the double twin chimneys of npower's 1400MW coal fired Tilbury power station (powering 1.4 million homes using ?biomass? fuels and low-sulphur coal) which rise above the passing ghostly bulk of a cargo freighter on its last miles of its voyage from open sea into the Thames Estuary and on to Tilbury Docks. Historically, the Thames has long been a route for shipping that kept the capital supplied and although the docks have seen huge decreases in traffic and volume since the second world war, Tilbury remains a busy hub for containerized vessels arrivng from all over the world.

  • A woman hails a taxi in a London street that has been visited by the cartoon graffiti street artist Nathan Bowen of fireman created outside Shaftesbury Ave fire station. Striking a similar pose as the cartoon character, she also raises her arm to make a humourous street moment. But there is also another visual pun of the double-yellow parking lines endemic in the capitals that are echoed in the cartoon's high-visibility clothing.

  • A rack of quintessentially English 'saucy postcards' are on display in Scarborough, the northern seaside town. Telling jokes to send back to friends and family, they using cartoon characters of buxom women, hen-pecked husbands or sexually-frustrated young men, the humour is bawdy and cheeky - the epitome of seaside holiday kitsch. The best-known saucy seaside postcards were created by Bamforths (founded 1870) and despite the decline in popularity of postcards that are overtly tacky, postcards continue to be a significant economic and cultural aspect of British seaside tourism. In the 1950s, Bamforth postcards were among the most popular of the 18 million items purchased at British resorts.

  • While visiting London's tourist sites, a young boy of about 5 years-old spends time at Horse Guards where a soldier from the Household Cavalry, also dressed in a deep red coat, stands motionless and at-ease. It is a bright day and the gray stonework amplifies the scarlett uniform tunics as the boy has his picture taken by family. The British Household Cavalry is classed as a corps in its own right, and consists of two regiments: Life Guards (British Army) and the Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons). They are the senior regular regiments in the British Army, with traditions dating from 1660.

  • As a boy swings from a tree, canoeists enjoy a day's paddling down the River Lesse, Belgium's prime kayaking destination in the southern Ardennes region. At Anseremme, south of the town of Dinant, the adventurers negotiate their way down 21 km of gentle fresh water through the beautiful Belgian gorges and forests. Before plunging down a weir (Barrage in French) near a camp site they are pelted by splashing water from campers in the water. The red canoes have been hired for the day from 'Kayaks Ansiaux' and another rival company who rent blue boats. Families and young people make the slow journey along the Lesse, Paddles match the colours of the canoes and they all glint off a strong afternoon sun during the high-season holiday month. Most commonly routes start in Han and go all the way down to Dinant, where the Lesse meets the Meuse.
