  • Commuters to-and-fro in the heat of a city summer during a 3-day underground tube strike in September 2007. This is Victoria mainline station during a summer heatwave. It's a transport hub for tube lines, buses and overground train routes and we see masses of pedestrians and buses reflected in the glass of a bush shelter window. As a result of the industrial action, the buses are full so the quickest way of reaching one's destination is to walk. An official points out directions, someone shields his eyes from the sun, a lady walks with her hands in pockets, the 239 bus to Victoria approaches and sightseeing tours sign advertises tickets. People are seen in differing scales and sizes.

  • Aboard the Carnival cruise ship Ecstasy, a father and son are practicing wearing life-preservers during the first few hours of their voyage from Miami around the Gulf of Mexico. They and every passenger on-board are being instructed by members of the ship's crew to muster (gather) in specific locations around the vessel before heading further out to sea. Under international law, everyone on a holiday ship like this needs to know what do in the event of an emergency at sea so well-organised drills are rehearsed on deck. The baby looks uncomfortable wrapped in his life vest but sucks on a pacifier dummy. The father looks relaxed in the knowledge that their lives are not risk on this occasion. The Panamanian-registered MS Ecstasy is a 70,367 ton cruise ship carrying 2,052 passengers and 920 crew belonging to Vegas-style Carnival Cruise lines.

  • Near the junction of the 400 to Buckhead, the 401 highway divides and splits during afternoon rush-hour traffic which slows and builds up so that vehicles and cars back-up as they head home and out of Downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The inner median is coned off during some construction work which slows the traffic even more. Crossing the 5-lane road comes a train of Atlanta's own mass-transit system, the MARTA network and it approaches the overpass with care. We see the infrastructure of a modern metropolis at the busiest time of day when the exodus to get home puts the roads and feeder lanes under the most pressure. Fortunately, the weather is fine with good visibility making drivers' journeys a little shorter and more tolerable but it shows too America's habit and dependency on car culture.

  • Lambeth Bridge closed in the aftermath of the terrorism event when four people were killed (including the attacker) and 20 injured during a terrorist attack on Westminster Bridge and outside the Houses of Parliament, on 22nd March 2017, in central London, England. Parliament was in session and all MPs and staff and visitors were in lock-down while outside, the public and traffic were kept away from the area of Westminster Bridge and parliament Square, the scenes of the attack. It is believed a lone man crashed his car into pedestrians then, armed with a knife tried to enter Parliament, stabbing and killing a police officer at parliament's main gates.

  • Police officers from Humberside in the North east of England stand in front of the main entrance to the Olympic Park as a visible presence during the London 2012 Olympics. More than 230 officers from across the Humber region travelled to London to help police the Olympic Games. Holidays were restricted, training reduced and special constables drafted in to provide cover in Hull and the East Riding as officers were sent to London to police the city while the Games are on. Senior officers say they have been working hard to ensure "core policing" across Hull and the East Riding is not weakened.

  • Street landscape near the Westfield City shopping complex, Stratford. On a new stretch of highway recently finished for those circumnavigating the perimeter of the Olympic park and its nearby shopping centre. The outer barrier of the Olympic Park is 2.5 sq km and circles a huge area of the borough of Stratford in the borough of Newham. The new landscape often looks incongruous to those living on many poor estates, excluded from the events. But this regeneration is the legacy by the government who promise a brighter future for this part of east London..
