One sees the surreal-looking white radomes in the shape of golf balls - each containing a satellite dish - that are dotted across the science-fiction landscape. Many of these are used for signals interception from communications satellites and are commonly thought to be part of the ECHELON and PRISM eavesdropping projects by the NSA, a highly secretive world-wide signals intelligence and analysis network. Other parts of this notorious site are thought to be used by the Space Based Infrared System employed by the US National Missile Defence program. The base has attracted significant levels of protest from anti-nuclear and pacifist groups.

  • A young child is surrounded by adults as they visit the trade stand of an unnamed manufacturer of a smart bomb that occupies a prominent space at their stand at the Farnborough air show - an expo for the aviation and defence industries. A primitive plastic chain protects the million Pound armament from visitors touching although the bomb will be a non-operational model. A TV screen demonstrates the deadly nature of the guided munition that are typically mounted under the wings of fighter jets - in the days before pilotless drone aircraft.

  • Company employees at defence, security and aerospace company Thales' exhibition stand at the Farnborough Air Show. The MoD's newest and most sophisticated surveillance and targeting drone, the Watchkeeper, is undergoing trials at Aberporth in west Wales. While the arguments over America's policy of "assassination by drone" rage across Pakistan and Afghanistan, fuelling public concern over the cold-eyed automation of warfare, the future of UAVs is quietly taking shape here on the Welsh coast, where there is daily proof that UAVs and manned aircraft can co-exist in British airspace.

  • RAF Fylingdales is a British Royal Air Force station high on Snod Hill in the North York Moors, England. Before their demolition by Ministry of Defence contractors this early attack warning Cold War facility, consisted of three 40-metre-diameter 'golfballs' or geodesic domes (radomes) containing mechanically steered radar. They became a local tourist attraction and coach tours drove past the site listening to the interference on radios emitted by the radomes. They have since been replaced by the current tetrahedron ('pyramid') structure and is still a secret location. Its Motto is "Vigilamus" ("We are watching"). It is now a radar base and part of the United States-controlled Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS)...

  • A view of the green Yorkshire moors countryside looking down from a nearby hill to the top secret intelligence-gathering base of RAF Menwith Hill, near Harrogate, Yorkshire, England. One sees the surreal-looking white radomes in the shape of golf balls - each containing a satellite dish - that are dotted across the science-fiction landscape. Many of these are used for signals interception from communications satellites and are commonly thought to be part of ECHELON, a highly secretive world-wide signals intelligence and analysis network. Other parts of this notorious site are thought to be used by the Space Based Infrared System employed by the US National Missile Defence program. The base has attracted significant levels of protest from anti-nuclear and pacifist groups.
