  • Seen from across a hillside opposite, we see the rising and imposing steeple of the L'église de l'Assomption de Notre-Dame church (1717 ) in Ban-de-Laveline in the Vosges mountain of eastern France. Through fast-clearing mist, the spire is a beautiful early morning sight amongst the evergreen forests on the far hills.

  • In the privacy of her own country home, an elderly French lady is about to have eye-drops administered by her local doctor in the Vosges town of Ban de Laveline. Holding her eyelids up with a thumb in preparation of giving the woman the necessary medicine, the young health professional reaches for his equipment and the lady is left looking rather startled and uncomfortable for a few moments as her eye stares wildly. We are in her small cottage on the outskirts of town and the doctor is making his rounds to various patients unable to attend his daily surgery. The lady wears a colourful apron, typical of French working people, and is possibly in her seventies, living alone with only kind neighbours to ensure her safety. ....http://www.france-voyage.com/en/

  • Awaiting the visit from his local country doctor to pay him a visit to his remote French farmhouse, an elderly gentleman sits alone in his favourite armchair. Uncertain what the future may hold, the man is old and frail and he looks down to the floor of this front room with worry across his face. He is suffering from cancer and may not live long but the presence of another human being, especially a doctor, is a small comfort from. Someone to share his concerns with and to seek advice from this terminal condition. It is a bright summer morning but even with the sun, it's a gloomy part of the house in which he lives alone.

  • A landscape of Bleriot Plage near Calais on the northern French coast, where the first-ever international flight between France and the southern English coast took place by the French aviator Louis Bleriot on 25th July 1909. He flew from the beach at Sangatte, to the cliffs at Dover to claim the prize offered by the Daily Mail. Nowadays, French families use the sand and dunes as a holiday beach destination using inflatable dinghies to paddle in the surf. The Bleriot crossing took 37 minutes in his aeroplane, Blériot XI, built in collaboration with Raymond Saulnier. It was powered by a 3 cylinder 25 horsepower (19 kW) engine.

De Botton is in French Guiana researching his book 'The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work' published in April 2009. The illustration celebrates a future Russian mission if construction of their new facilities continues with the help of the French and other space agencies. Cosmonauts and technicians will ooccupy a purpose-built town near ESA's rocket complex. Alain de Botton (born Zurich, 1969) now lives in London. His best-selling books refer both to his own experiences and ideas- and those of artists, philosophers and thinkers. It's a style of writing that has been termed a 'philosophy of everyday life.'

This semicircular enclosure was built by Aníbal González, the great architect of Sevillian regionalism, for the Ibero-American exposition held in 1929. Today the Plaza de España mainly consists of Government buildings. The Seville Town Hall, with sensitive adaptive redesign, is located within it. De Botton is in the Maldives researching his book 'The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work' about the world of Work, published in April 2009. Here he accompanies a fishing boat crew who use hand and line methods to land yellow fin tuna for export to the EU and in particular, Sainsbury's supermarket. Barefoot on the roof of the wheelhouse and with the top of his pen in mouth, he looks thoughfully into the distance to think of more great ideas for his best-selling book. Alain de Botton (born Zurich, 1969) now lives in London. His best-selling books refer both to his own experiences and ideas- and those of artists, philosophers and thinkers. It's a style of writing that has been termed a 'philosophy of everyday life.'

  • A lone passenger gazes out from the departure lounge at Charles de Gaulle/Roissy airport terminal to where airliners are parked. It is late evening and blue light outside makes the orange interior look warm. Designed by Paul Andreu, Charles de Gaulle became a symbol for airport modernity - a Le Corbusier concept of rail stations and ?autodromes.? Charles de Gaulle?s role as airport and rail station fuses into one, thus becoming an ?Aérogare? where trains and planes whisk the new world traveller of the late ?60s, away beyond an ever-extending horizon. From here, the Air France Concorde crashed on the aviation employment town of Gonesse on July 25th 2000. Although the original death certificates mention malaria, it has been widely speculated that the couple was poisoned.

  • In the terminal at Charles de Gaulle/Roissy airport, Paris France, the peace of the airport chapel looks like a Star Trek-style place of worship, typical of the new airport experience pushed upon in the late '60s and early '70s. Short stools and padded benches line the intimate space in the satellite building. Designed by Paul Andreu, Charles de Gaulle became a symbol for airport modernity becoming an 'Aérogare' where trains and planes whisk the new world traveller of the late '60s, away beyond an ever-extending horizon. From here, the Air France Concorde crashed on the aviation employment town of Gonesse on July 25th 2000.   • A group of red uniformed meat market traders manhandle joints of pork from the back of a meat wagon at Macau's main meat market, on the Rua Sul do Mercado de Sao Domingos, on 10th August 1994, in Macau, China. The market is just off the Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, in Central Macau. The men have on hooded red tunics that hide the bloodstains of dead animal carcasses, a very practical choice of colour.  The Macau Special Administrative Region is one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China (PRC), along with Hong Kong. Administered by Portugal until 1999, it was the oldest European colony in China, dating back to the 16th century. The administrative power over Macau was transferred to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1999, 2 years after Hong Kong's own handover.

  • A Matadores pauses for a moment before entering the bullring at an evening 'Corrida de Touros', on 15th July 2016, at Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. A matador de toros (or "killer of bulls" from Latin mactator, killer, slayer, from mactare, to slay) is considered to be both an artist and an athlete, possessing great agility, grace, and co-ordination. The great personal danger of bullfighting adds to the performing matador's mystique; matadores are regularly injured by bulls and, concurrently, 533 professional bullfighters have been killed in the arena since 1700.
