  • Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is seen dancing with a Tory Party official during the 1990 Conservative Party conference in Blackpool. Thatcher is wearing a favourite black and red ball gown and is the centre of attention for delegates and media. She is seen with Joy, Babs and Teddie - otherwise known as the Beverly Sisters entertainers, the longest surviving vocal group of all time without a change in the line up. The sisters kick their legs up in the air dancing the Charleston (though not in unison) but Mrs Thatcher in her long dress declines and merely stands straight-legged. They are on the dance floor and Tory party officials are enjoying the moment as their PM relishes the moment.

Spinning his partner on the specially-laid flooring, the gentleman is dressed in a double-breasted suit in keeping with the 1950s theme of this fair's celebration of a newly-refurbished park. The lady wears a red dress and holds her arm out to regain balance as she is pulled back towards her dance partner. The seated crowd watch attentively beneath London Plain trees whose foliage gives welcome shade on a warm summer afternoon.

  • Morris man and lunchtime drinkers gather in Leadenhall Market on St George's Day, when 'Englishmen' celebrate their patron saint. Wearing white uniforms they jig their traditional dance, a form of English folk dance accompanied by accordion and pipes. It is based on rhythmic stepping and the execution of choreographed figures by a group of dancers. Implements such as sticks, swords, and handkerchiefs may also be wielded by the dancers. In a small number of dances for one or two men, steps are performed near and across a pair of clay tobacco pipes laid across each other on the floor. English records of Morris dancing date back to 1448.

  • Visitors to the ancient site of Stonehenge celebrate the Summer Solstice on the morning of June 21st - the longest day - by dancing in circles while holding hands. The Stonehenge site is a place of pilgrimage for neo-druids and those following pagan or neo-pagan beliefs. The midsummer sunrise began attracting modern visitors in 1870s. Today the stones are owned by English Heritage, the guardians of ancient and historical structures. Most years, substantial police and barriers prevent on-lookers from approaching the stones but on this occasion, revellers were allowed to party long after the early 4.15am sunrise. Stonehenge is a Neolithic and Bronze Age megalithic monument located near Amesbury in the English county of Wiltshire. Composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones it is one of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world. Archaeologists think that the standing stones were erected between 2500 BC and 2000 BC and served as an outdoor observatory from where to watch the constellations. The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986.

  • An elderly retired couple dance on the wide but darkly lit dance floor at Blackpool Tower Ballroom, England. They are the only dancers in the empty dance space, except for the Wurlitzer organist who is playing his accompanying music at the front of the stage, in a pool of bright light. We are looking down from a balcony high above and the husband and wife are pausing during their dance routine, stopping just long enough to register as sharp figures in the picture. The light is orange and red because of the tungsten light source. The Ballroom is the traditional home of the mighty Wurlitzer Organ and complemented by the 3 Deck Wersi - the world's most advanced organ. The Wersi is a state-of-the-art Louvre organ which is played by the resident organists in this magnificent setting. The present interior of the Blackpool Tower circus was created by the famous theatre designer, Frank Matcham and completed in 1900.

Thatcher is wearing a favourite black and red ball gown and is the centre of attention for delegates and media whose TV lights have lit the dancing couple from the right-hand side. Her partner is young and has acne and is wearing a formal dinner jacket and bow tie. The image is warm from the ambient light and there is a slight blur of movement as they sweep past the viewer.

  • A traditional band of Morris Men dance outside the ancient Christian church of St. Botolph's without Bishopsgate in the City of London on St George's Day. The church may have survived the Great Fire of London unscathed, and only lost one window in the Second World War, but on 24 April 1993 was one of the many buildings to be damaged by an IRA bomb.

  • Mexican Papantla Flyers perform a pre-Hispanic ritual dedicated to their sun god, a leap from a 90 foot pole, on 15th May 1996, the Tulum ruins, Yucatan, Mexico. Dressed in their native costumes these men lash themselves to this towering pole with a leather bindings and soar off into space backwards and upside down in the ultimate leap of faith. The Papantla Flyers are Totonac Indians performing an ancient fertility ceremony. As they slowly descend to earth, the 13 revolutions made by the four flyers equal the 52-year span of the Aztec century. They represent earth, water, fire and air and the interweaving of these four elements symbolizes the creation of new life. A fifth man is left on top, dancing on this tiny nine-inch platform while simultaneously playing both a pre-Columbian flute and drum.
