  • Seen from a low angle at the side of the track, near where grass and daisies grow, a speeding Eurostar TGV train hurtles towards the viewer, blurring as it comes towards us. This is the Kent countryside, otherwise known as the fertile Garden of England, and the route for high-speed trains that ply back and forth between western Europe and London St Pancras. This international passenger service was made possible by the completion of the Channel Tunnel in 1994 operating eighteen-carriage Class 373 trains which run at up to 300 kilometres per hour (186 mph) on a network of high-speed lines. Eurostar is operated by the national railway companies of France and Belguim, SNCF and SNCB, and by Eurostar (UK) Ltd (EUKL), a subsidiary of London and Continental Railways (LCR) which in turn also owns the high-speed infrastructure and stations on the British side.

Stanage Edge at approximately 4 miles in length and 458m at its highest point is the largest of the gritstone cliffs that overlook Hathersage, Derbyshire. The area is one of the most popular locations in the Peak District National Park for climbing and walking with hundreds of rock climbing routes to challenge all ranges of ability. Walkers are drawn to the area to enjoy the varied moorland scenery with stunning views across the surrounding countryside including Hathersage, Castleton and the 'Shivering Mountain', Mam Tor in the west. • Two children walk along a path between two dry stone walls in the countryside around the Yorkshire town of Settle. Striding between the boundaries of agricultural grazing land, whose trees and undergrowth has been cleared, the kids have come from a distant farmhouse which has recently lost its stock of sheep due to Foot and Mouth disease. Dry stone walls serve as boundaries and enclosures for farmers and land owners. Built by tradesmen called Wallers, a dying tradition and skill, they're constructed from stones without any mortar to bind them together. The stones must be carefully selected by shape to ensure that they have a large contact surface area with their neighbours and so do not slip. They are a legacy of the movement towards enclosure of common farming and grazing land as English society moved away from medieval feudalism. Model released.

One sees the surreal-looking white radomes in the shape of golf balls - each containing a satellite dish - that are dotted across the science-fiction landscape. Many of these are used for signals interception from communications satellites and are commonly thought to be part of ECHELON, a highly secretive world-wide signals intelligence and analysis network. Other parts of this notorious site are thought to be used by the Space Based Infrared System employed by the US National Missile Defence program. The base has attracted significant levels of protest from anti-nuclear and pacifist groups.

  • A portrait of a teenage boy of about 16 years-old with Welsh mountains and hills in the background in the 1970s. With a rolling valley, a lake, a farmhouse and misty hills in the distance, the landscape is a peaceful scene of an otherwise wild countryside in north Wales. The boy and his family are on a daytrip to the Welsh hills. It was taken on a film camera by the youth's father, an amateur photographer in 1973. The picture shows us a memory of nostalgia in an era from the last century.

  • Empty countryside landscape at the former nuclear weapons-era airfield occupied by US Air force personnel during the Cold War and now vacant, awaiting re-landscaping and returning to common parkland for the public to use. Opened in 1942, it was used by both the Royal Air Force and United States Army Air Forces during World War II and the United States Air Force during the Cold War. After the Cold War ended, it was closed in 1993. The airfield was also known for the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp held outside its gates in the 1980s. In 1997 Greenham Common was designated as public parkland.

The late afternoon sun is low across the valley and there is a haze that partly obscures and refracts light over the distant landscape. There is snow on the distant mountain peaks but the countryside has the brown look of a snowless winter. Far off villages and hamlets hug the hillsides and golden light floods the scene. • Deep in the West Sussex countryside are a group of Territorial Army soldiers. They have stopped in a remote lane to consult their Ordnance Survey maps during a day of learning to navigate with maps and compasses. Over a weekend learn the skills needed to be part-time army volunteers known as the TA and have far to go. Together they look at maps and argue where they should go next. Looking on with mild amusement is their senior officer who accompanies them to assess their leadership skills and initiative. Behind them a road sign tells them the road ahead is a dead end to traffic. It is a very English summer landscape of lush green vegetation and grasses. The TA work as part of Britain's reserve land forces. Together with the Regular Army they provide support at home and overseas including Iraq and Afghanistan. .

The image has only three tones, graduating from dark at the bottom, becoming lighter to the top. It is late in the day and the light is soft and warm in colour and the friends make their way up the gradient in single-file, each striding with legs apart as they climb the hill forming part of the Mendips. It is a scene of tranquillity, the landscape is peaceful and unspoilt for outdoor countryside pursuits like walking, one of the fastest-growing leisure activities in Britain for people who take advantage of rural England.

  • A night view of the green Yorkshire Moors countryside looking down from a nearby hill to the top secret intelligence-gathering base of RAF Menwith Hill, near Harrogate, Yorkshire, England. One sees the lights of passing traffic past surreal-looking white radomes in the shape of golf balls - each containing a satellite dish - that are dotted across the science-fiction landscape.

  • The outline of electricity cables stretch across a gloomy winter sky in woodland near Wrington, North Somerset England. Diagonally, the cables travel across the picture but they are part of a line of L6 pylons that have already crossed many miles of South-West England's countryside, carrying 40,000 Volts along this network of aluminium cables to power some of Bristol's high supply demands. In the foreground we see the bare boughs and branches of trees creating a Sci-Fi scene of ugly 21st technology versus the beauty of nature. Insatiable appetites for raw power and energy means electricity is now an expensive comodity after climbing oil prices doubled electricity utility bills for some domestic users.

  • A VW camper van adorned with British union jack colours is parked on a campsite at Reedham on the Norfolk Broads. With late sun shining on its polished surfaces, we see a tent belonging to a camper at the site in East Anglia. Painted in the colours British flag, a theme of patriotic feeling by people summing up a great, traditional British summer and their love of the countryside. The Volkswagen Type 2, known officially, depending on body type as the Transporter, Kombi and Microbus, and informally as the Bus (US) or Camper (UK), is a panel van introduced in 1950 by German automaker Volkswagen as its second car model – following and initially deriving from Volkswagen's first model, the Type 1 (Beetle), it was given the factory designation Type 2.
