  • An engineer working underground during construction of the Heathrow Express train project on behalf of Heathrow airport operator BAA (British Airport Authority), London England. While standing erect, he twists a high-tension tool that secures the concrete sleepers to the steel rails using a Pandrol Clip. The tunnel snakes its way into the distance behind him, lit by temporary lighting on the 5-mile tunnel wall. Its sections are reinforced concrete, shaped for the Heathrow Express electric Siemens-built trains that provide a direct link between Heathrow's terminals and Paddington station in central London. This is now the most expensive rail-mile fare in the UK at £15.50 for a 15-minute journey. In 1994 one tunnel collapsed without warning in one of the most catastrophic civil engineering disasters in British history.

  • Contractors working for Lambeth Council begin the controversial conversion of carnegie Library into a gym, by pouring concrete into the Grade II listed building, on 18th December 2017, in Herne Hill, south London, England. Shut by Lambeth council and occupied by protesters for 10 days in April, the library which was bequeathed by American philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie has been locked ever since because, say Lambeth austerity cuts are necessary even though 24hr security make it more expensive to keep closed than open for the local community. A gym that locals say they don't want or need is planned to replace the working library and while some of the 20,000 books on shelves will remain, no librarians will be present to administer it.

  • The artist Rachel Whiteread CBE (born 1963) sits on the steps of her best-known sculpture called 'House'. 'House' stands alone on a now-empty and house-less East London street. Oddly, the contours of the structure have been inverted to reveal an inside-out version of the original building. It is a concrete cast of the inside of an entire Victorian terraced house completed in autumn 1993 and exhibited at the location of the original property -- 193 Grove Road -- in East London (all the houses in the street had earlier been knocked down by the council). It won Whiteread the Turner Prize (the first woman to do so) for best young British artist in 1993. Here we see 'House' at a close distance with graffiti painted on the walls stating the words "Wot for ..why not!" before it was controversially demolished by the council in January 1994.

One man bends down to help loop a chain beneath one of the girders and attached to the dangling hook while another secures the chain and another man is in radio contact with the crane driver out of sight. Importantly, behind their low-loader truck is a Smirnoff advertising billboard with a famous ad campaign for the Vodka distillery. It depicts three carved Polynesian statues of Easter Island but seen through a botttle of the alcoholic beverage, is a representation of a face wearing a head band and MP3 headphones. Seen juxtaposed with the construction men and their building technology this scene describes a visual pun between an ancient lost civilization and the modern age of technology. Smirnoff is a vodka distillery founded in Moscow, by Piotr Arsenieyevich Smirnov. The .brand is now distributed in 130 countries and includes flavored vodka and malt beverages. The Sminoff advertising campaign is said to be based on the Belgian surrealist artist Rene Magritte whose paradoxical images stretched our ideas of what was reality and the fantastic...

At the bottom of the steps and floating face down in the clear, unpolluted water, his arms outstretched, is a diver wearing a wet suit who appears lifeless. It is a sunny afternoon and the shadows of the steps' rail which zigzags down the concrete steps.
