  • The British Union Jack Flag flies in a stiff breeze, its colours of red-white and blue almost wholly horizontal as the wind tears through the blue skies and beneath wispy cirrus clouds, in Eastbourne, West Sussex, England UK. Tied to its flag-pole, this symbol of patriotic nationalism, evokes a sense of pride and spirit the British are known for - having encouraged them through two world wars and more recently, other military campaigns. The colours (colors) of Scotland's blue and white crosses and the English cross of St. George are merged to make this well-known symbol of the British Isles.

  • A hot air balloon is partially inflated before flight at Longleat Estate, Warminster, England. Using firstly cold air from a gas-powered fan, before its propane burners are used for final inflation, one of the ground crew assists in the process by pulling at the fragile synthetic material so that the volume within the whole 'envelope' can fill without damage and it's spectrum arc of colours are becoming rainbow-like. The hot air balloon is the oldest successful human-carrying flight technology. The first manned flight was made by Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and François Laurent d'Arlandes in a balloon created by the Montgolfier brothers in 1783. In today's sport balloons the envelope is generally made from nylon fabric and the mouth of the balloon (closest to the burner flame) is made from fire resistant material such as Nomex.

  • A detail of a young exiled Libyan woman who has painted her face in the colours of the pre-revolutionary flag that Libyans have adopted as their new flag after Gaddafi's downfall, During the protests opposite her London embassy, the woman shows us the flag of the independent kingdom: Red, black, and green with a crescent and star in the centre. After the Libyan revolution of 1969, the flag was changed to the Arab Liberation Flag of horizontal red, white, and black bands. In 1971 Libya joined the Federation of Arab Republics with Egypt and Syria, which used a similar flag with a hawk emblem in the center and the name of the country beneath it. When Libya left the Federation in 1977, the new plain green flag was adopted. But during the 2011 uprising, the old flag was once again adopted.

  • A window cleaner leathers down a freshly washed window of a terraced house in The Dingle district of Liverpool, England. Next door, the neighbour's favourite colour is obviously red - the colour of his home, his car and his favourite football team too - Liverpool FC. There is a sense of pride here, unlike other areas of the city where derelict streets are still common. Here, the paintwork is fresh, the cars are spotless and the red house has a burglar alarm on the wall. The sign there is a degree of wealth in this neighbourhood.

  • With a look of delight on her face, a four year-old girl stamps through fallen snow in a field near her home in Bielefeld, Germany. Wearing a vibrant red bobble hat and matching coat, she smiles towards the viewer with the pleasure of any child enjoying the excitement of fresh snow. Ski or sledge tracks can be seen at her feet but she is the only person in this empty landscape, as if she's walking on her own through the snowy hills. It is the winter of 1967 and the reds are very vibrant and dominant from the Kodachrome film used which also has a wonderful muted blue colour cast in the mid-tones giving the picture a chilly, wintry feel reminiscent of the classic days of early photography when shifts in color gave a faded and dated look.

It is a horrible place to sit in the sun and her partner has left her alone to sit on her sun lounger, leaving the second chair vacant.
