  • It is mid-day on the narrow stretch of river, green lilly pads float on its surface and in unbder a fierce sun overhead, three young men are lazily making their way to the viewer in a rowing boat on the River Thames near the village of Shillingford, England. The young male in the middle is the one rowing and he pulls on one oar to steer around an unseen obstacle in the absolutely calm, clear blue waters of this majestic river whose source rises in deepest Gloucestershire to its industrial estuary in the English Channel 215 miles (346 km) away. But here in Oxfordshire, we see an idyllic scene of adventure and peace on calm rural waters in a beautiful and tranquil setting, on an English midsummer day. 'Three men in a Boat' published in 1889, is a humorous account by Jerome K. Jerome of a boating holiday on the Thames between Kingston and Oxford.

  • There is golden light across this narrow stretch of river, yellow flowers are on the bank and in late golden sunlight, two boys paddle upstream in their Indian canoe on the River Thames near the village of Shillingford, England. Lazily they plunge their paddles into the calm, clear blue waters of this majestic river whose source rises in deepest Gloucestershire to its industrial estuary in the English Channel 215 miles (346 km) away. But here in Oxfordshire, it is an idyllic scene of innocent childhood on calm rural waters in a beautiful and tranquil setting, on an English summer afternoon. The boys don't appear to be wearing life vests nor safety equipment but propel their craft forwards against the current with confidence.

  • The sun rises over the River Thames and City of London, the UK capital's financial heart. The solar power gathers in strength and intensity as it climbs from below the horizon and behind City buildings, its circular disc a flaming yellow which is soon to turn a deeper hue over the capital's orange skies at dawn. The tidal river is calm with only moored barges in the middle, used to secure other boats to their sides. The City wakes before another day of trading in the financial, banking and insurance institutions. The dome of St Paul's Cathedral is centre to the skyline.

  • An out of focus post with a light bulb attached, shines in the bright daylight with the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Cocoa beach is on Florida's so-called Space Coast, a resort of beaches, clubs, seafood restaurants and motels that came to life during the 1960s due to America's space program. NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center is located approximately 15 miles away. The Atlantic Ocean is flat calm in settled weather and the horizon is clear and well-defined with a ship just visible on the right side. Focus is on the sea rather than the post and the light bulb which look like a surreal addition to the landscape. Cocoa Beach served as a playground for many of the astronauts and NASA space industry workers and contractors during the heyday of the space race. After manned space flights, the town held astronaut parades. Before there was a "Silicon Valley," Cocoa Beach and other surrounding towns were full of the best and brightest technical minds around.

  • Looking out to the Mediterranean Sea from the Akrotiri Peninsular, Cyprus, we see the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, practising their display finale, the Vixen Break, a show-stopping manoeuvre of their 25-minute air show display routine. A rusted and crumbling hulk of a ship lies in the shallow surf and the Hawk jets used by the Red Arrows fan out above it using red, white and blue smoke. It is a calm sea near the shoreline and the shipwreck's remains provide a sad foreground to the dynamic flying beyond making a graphic landscape. 'Datum' is an axis on which the Red Arrows focus their displays, from where the whole show is visible at the crowd's centre. 'The Wreck' is but one of a series of datum points selected by the team leader at short notice to simluate diverse geographical features and wind directions. The wreck is the MV Achaios. Built in 1932, it was on a voyage from Yugoslavia to Jeddah in 1976 with a cargo of timber. She ran aground in a storm at Akrotiri Peninsula, but no lives were lost.

  • A group of young boys play in the calm waters of the Indian Ocean on Meedu Island, in the Republic of the Maldives. The shallows are a safe playground for these kids who swim and splash about in the clear shallows next to two small dhoni boats often used to fish using traditional hand and line, an important source of income for remote communities in this island nation. The sea is perfectly clear blue and the sand coral-white, in jeopardy to rising sea levels as global warming makes sea level locations like this vulnerable to flooding. The Maldives comprise of twenty-six atolls, featuring 1,192 coral islands of which 80 are holiday resorts with 200 inhabited by indigenous communities. This Islamic nation of 298 sq km (115 sq miles), lie seven hundred kilometres (435 miles) south-west of Sri Lanka.

  • A fisherman from the Maldives sits making a call on his mobile cell phone on the bow of a dhoni boat which heads along on a calm Indian Ocean. After a hard day's fishing he gazes forward to open sea where an almost uninterrupted view of sea and horizon is seen beyond except for a small island is faintly in view. Even small remote atoll communites in the Maldives have strong phone signals and many also have good Wi-Fi connections. He and his crew have been catching Yellow Fin Tuna in the seas north of the capital Male in this Islamic Republic. Their catch is for export to the EU and in particular, the UK's supermarkets. There is no limit and no obvious destination, just infinity and the thought of tomorrow.

  • Three teenage boys bait their lines in the calm of the River Wandle, one of London's lost rivers that still meanders through inner-city London on its course from Carshalton Pond to the Thames. The three lads are reflected in the ripples of this once-polluted water which was once flushed with the toxins of industry such as tanning factories and breweries. After expensive clean-ups by local authorities, kids like these are once again able to catch trout in the way boys like them would do hundreds of years before the industrial revolutiion fouled many a water course. It is a perfect later-summer afternoon and the sun is shining on waterside reeds and grasses making this a scene of idyllic boyhood and undusturbed lazy dreams.

  • A lone bather wallows lazily in the calm pool waters at the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat (formerly the Bel Air Hotel), Alpes Maritimes, France. Basking on his back, the man lies with arms outstretched, the warm buoyant water making him weightless. he has found inner-peace and there is restful tranquility here, where surface-tension allows the bather to unwind completely in this idyllic place on the French Cote d'Azur riviera. Behind his head unoccupied sun loungers are facing the Mediterranean Sea, its clear horizon empty except for a lone yacht that sails along the ocean coast. The colour of both sea and pool are the same on this overcast day that allows us to experience a more muted tone to the scene, also allowing us to see the contiunation of natural waters, as if they run from one to the other.

  • A class of schoolboys accompanied by their teachers play on the shingle at the water's edge in the south coast seaside town of Brighton. The East Pier is resplendent with amusement rides and attractions that populate its long structure, jutting out into the calm English Channel beyond which is the French coast further south. The children are still in their school shirts, shorts and ties but have taken off their shoes and socks to frolic and enjoy some precious fresh-air and the freedom that childhood brings. According to British legal requirements, schoolchildren on away day visits must have accompanying adults with a ratio of 1:xx though it appears this group's quota is less with two teachers per 28 boys.

  • A French Dassault-Breguet Mirage military jet interceptor/fighter stands on a pedestal in the Place de la Concorde, Paris during an aviation display weekend along the Champs Elysées. Passers-by seem oblivious to this celebration of French aviation as they walk through the Parisian square, the scene of public executions during the revolution. The Mirage seems to be climbing off its platform and up into the cloudless summer afternoon sky as a young child sits on top of his father's shoulders and passengers in a city bus seem trapped behind the windows. Its is a scene of incongruous moments, a surreal appearance of frightening military technology amid the calm of a public place. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903. .

  • Ageing 80s technology of the Thames Barrier on the River Thames near Woolwich in east London. As daylight fades to become a purple hue, we see the waters of the Thames flowing on the tide. • Lying on her back with eyes closed, a young girl stretches her arms out allowing her father to support her weight in an empty swimming pool in Miami Florida.
