  • At the height of financial uncertainty, we see from a low pavement angle investors queueing outside the Maddox Street branch of the troubled Northern Rock Bank, off Regent Street, Mayfair, in September 2007. Their hard-earned savings appear to be in jeopardy after the bank announced an emergency loan from the Bank of England. Despite reassurances from officials who insisted that the Bank which has £113bn in assets, was not in danger of going bust, concerned men and women wait in line, some with their faces on view and reading newspapers or more commonly, wishing to remain anonymous and keeping their backs to reporters and cameras. The rush of customers demanding their investments almost spelled the demise of the bank with over £2bn removed from accounts in a few days. Northern Rock struggled since money markets seized up over the summer. .

  • The shadows of two passing locals approach the tiny Cameron-run post office hut at Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. We see in the foreground the freshly painted Royal Mail post box which is lit by early morning sunshine telling us that the next collection is at 2.45pm despite it being 8.50am. This branch serves the local community of this Skye town, close to the Skye Bridge and is not only a place to post letters and packages but to buy miscellaneous supplies like newspapers and food at a time when rural sub-post offices are threatened with closure by a financially-troubled Royal Mail. Small villages like this often say that the post office is the ties its folk together, acting as a nucleus for information about village life. Their closure would therefore mean that the fabric of such remote communities are in jeopardy.

  • High in the mountains is a lone tree stands as testament to the deforestation problem in the Himalayas, wood used for tourist showers. Communities here partly-depend on the agriculture of rice-growing but also on the passing tourist trade. Western trekkers from all over the world walk through these tiny communities on their way up the series of climbing trails of the Annapurna Conservation Sanctuary circuit, a sometimes rigorous walk from the low hills of Pokhara to the higher altitudes of Annapurna, the (26,000 feet (8,000 metre) peak. To be greeted by so much choice is the most rewarding experience and the offer of hot showers is about the best reward for so much exertion.

  • 'Last Day' is written on a closed taylors business in London, a victim of the UK recession. Reduced prices and services are listed on the glass with a poster urging customers to grab a bargain. Around a recession-bled Britain, high-street businesses have been going bust in their thousands. Britain has now endured eight recessions since the Second World War. No two recessions are alike, and that applies to the current slowdown also. It has been caused by a shock to the availability of credit, a massive build up of debt. The number of people out of work currently stands at almost two million. Given the rate at which the economy is deteriorating this could easily be above three million. From a continuing piece of work about windows and urban messages, the picture is from the project of closed business windows: 'Bust - the Art of Recession'.

The Elizabeth Tower (previously called the Clock Tower) named in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II in her Diamond Jubilee year – was raised as a part of Charles Barry's design for a new palace, after the old Palace of Westminster was largely destroyed by fire on the night of 16 October 1834. The new Parliament was built in a Neo-gothic style. Although Barry was the chief architect of the Palace, he turned to Augustus Pugin for the design of the clock tower. It celebrated its 150th anniversary on 31 May 2009. The tower was completed in 1858 and has become one of the most prominent symbols of both London and England.

The large crossing dome is composed of three layers: the first triple dome ever to be constructed. St Paul's Cathedral, London, is a Church of England cathedral and seat of the Bishop of London. Its dedication to Paul the Apostle dates back to the original church on this site, founded in AD 604. St Paul's sits at the top of Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the City of London, and is the mother church of the Diocese of London. The present church dating from the late 17th century was built to an English Baroque design of Sir Christopher Wren, as part of a major rebuilding program which took place in the city after the Great Fire of London, and was completed within his lifetime.
