  • A few miles from the finish line, this long-distance runner has stopped in agony to lean against the walls beneath Tower Bridge during th London Marathon, England. Pushing against the solid wall and stretching his cramped leg muscles, he grimaces in pain as other runners speed past on their way completing their personal race. Pushed to his limits, this man needs to continue a few more Kilometres to claim his medal and to claim victory. But he still has to overcome the pain of an overworked body. When glycogen runs low, the body must then burn stored fat for energy, which does not burn as readily. When this happens, the runner will experience dramatic fatigue. This is called "hitting the wall".

  • Having just unearthed more bodies from layers of volcanic ash and pumice, an archaeologist's assistant pauses for a cigarette, kneeling beside a victim of the AD79 eruption of Mount Versuvius over the ancient Roman town of Pompeii. Buried beneath huge amounts of toxic material this person was suffocated and crushed from falling debris. Preserved in a shell of volcanic material it is to be removed from this site on top of a villa roof where, it is calculated, this citizen was one of the last to die, having climbed 4 metres above ground level to await its fate. The Italian man ears a red t-shirt and holds a pick that has scraped and brushed away the soil to reveal the human form which also shows another body beneath. Others litter the rooftop too proving that many survivors of the first eruption perished after the second many hours later.

  • A man of Afro-Caribbean birth, clutches at his scarf to keep out freezing temperatures during a cold snap in south London. Falling snow has settled on the man's black hair and even turned his eyelashes white after his walk from home to a local bus stop from where he is trying to commute to work. Because of skin colour, the white snowflakes make this picture a largely monochrome scene, adding to the bleak sense of wintry conditions. He is clearly unprepared for winter, wearing neither hat nor gloves and looks chilled to the bone thanks to the heat he's losing through his head and upper body. The climate of this part of the northern hemisphere can be ferocious for those ill-equipped or at the very least, unpleasant for those from warmer parts of the world.

  • With his personal belongings and beach shingle surrounding him, a man sits on his seaside towel in soft sunlight in Dover eating a snack which is dribbling out of his mouth. The skin from many previous hours of exposure to solar radiation has left him raw and sunburned and therefore dried and dying skin is peeling in shreds on his back and shoulder. He looks like an eccentric local character who seems oblivious to the health risks that his continued sunbathing is inflicting on his bizarrely scorched body.

Their body language suggests they know each other. The lady in the middle has red hair and lips and has her eyes closed and is holding a bottle of Hooch, an alcoholic drink. The party venue is dark and chaotic and the atmosphere is energetic and lively at a club venue called Adrenaline Village in Battersea, South London.

  • An athletic man poses against a wall on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach, Florida. This fine specimen of a man wears roller-blades and trousers tucked into his skates with a yellow t-shirt with the word Frequency across his pectoral muscles. His shdow appears across the wall and because of the angle, his shape has been greatly exaggerated, his body becoming a much wider, stockier proportion than the reality. He stands with an arm resting high on the wall and the other on his hip, almost in a feminine manner. He is nonetheless the epitome of maleness, of virility with the healthy physique that women adore and other men are jealous of! The sdidewalk pavement arcs around a corner and the wall with its long shadow is a strong diagonal line across the picture, disappearing to the far right.

  • From a hospital light box, we see a detail of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan. Sections of a patient's skull and brain illustrate to doctors, potential abnormalities. Dyes used in X-ray and CT scans in the same way because both areas use X-rays (ionizing radiation). Agents work by blocking the X-ray photons from passing through the area where they locate and reach the X-ray film. This results in differing levels of density on the X-ray/CT film but the dyes have no direct physiologic impact on the tissue in the body. MRI contrast works by altering the local magnetic field in the tissue being examined. Normal and abnormal tissue will respond differently to this slight alteration, yielding differing signals. Varied signals are transferred to the images, visualizing many different types of tissue abnormalities and diseases.

It is a hot summer's afternoon but wearing black heavy-duty RAF regulation boots and the distinctive, specially-tailored blue overalls, is a member of the team's support ground-crew (known as the Blues). Their jobs might include engineering, operations or administration work. Secondary duties are asked of them too and here we see the lower body of photographer Senior Aircraftman (SAC) Matt Reid who holds a hardened folder containing the scaled artwork while standing on the soft sand. The crowd mingles in the background and a lady dressed in only a bikini returns to her possessions. .

  • The tail and sharp barbs of a freshly-caught yellow fin tuna fish lies inert on a filleting table at a refrigerated processing factory on Himmafushi island, Maldives. The 50kg carcass has been swimming across the Indian Ocean non-stop since birth and just line-caught by freelance boat crews who share profits for only high-quality fish that passes stringent health tests. The tuna has been in ice since being landed at sea to keep a low-temperature body core so the workers cut out the prime flesh as quickly as possible before boxing the resulting chunks of steak for export by air to Europe and in particular for customers such as UK's Sainsbury's supermarket. The filleting is performed by Sri Lankan ex-fishermen and widowers, having lost their families during the Tsunami. Using sharp knives, they skillfully remove valuable meat and throw the rest.

Seen from a low angle, both the horses hoof and her foot in red high heel shoes appear to be askew in a postural echo, when two mannerisms or body language are similar. The light is blue because of the shadow both subjects are in but her shoes and matching short red dress appear vibrant in saturation and hue.

  • A small group of men are together on the beach just opposite to Ocean Drive on Miami Beach. Two of them are in the foreground and each wear sun glasses, each holding cigars that may be Cuban in origin, a popular source of tobacco leaf in this region of America. They have recently been immersed in the sea and water drips down their rather flabby bodies with the gentleman on the left sucking on his cigar with a belly that expands around his tanned midriff. It is intensely bright, sunny day on the sand, seen behind. Flash has emphasized the water drips and the male sweat and we also see a very clear blue tropical sky.

  • "The week of Dunblane." Mindful of the Dunblane massacre that week, a baby massage class takes place at a health clinic in south London. Spread across a matt are six babies of varying ages and sizes whose mums are tenderly stroking their infants' bodies and senses with soft, gentle touches over the head, face, shoulders, arms, chest, stomach and legs which is a recommended way of tactile communication between mother and child. Some children are looking up into their mothers' faces, others are looking elsewhere and one is upset but comforted. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old...

Still to towel himself down, he looks chilled to the bone but stands talking to friends out of view. This bathing area is where the normally busy Serpentine Swimming Club has the use of this Royal Lake known as Lansbury's Lido. It is now normally open only in the summer, but one traditional event occurs each year on New Year's Day, when the ice is broken and brave bathers dive into the cold waters of the lake. The Serpentine will be used for the swimming leg of the triathlon at the London 2012 Olympics. The pool was formed in 1730, its name from a snakelike, curve. Queen Caroline wife of George II ordered the damming of the River Westbourne and other natural ponds in Hyde Park.

  • A rather rotund man wearing a flat cap, a checked shirt under braces that keep his ample trousers up above his fat tummy, affectionately tickled his pet dog, a Whippet ,who stands still with two paws on his master's large leg. It is a bright day on the beach at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England. Bathers are running on the sand in the background and the man and his dog are content to watch the world go by from their promenade bench. Their is a great deal of trust and love these two have for each other - the gentleman having brought his dog on holiday to the seaside with him, rather than leave him with friends or in kennels. The dog is healthy, lithe and obviously has great speed in those muscular legs, vastly different to the man, whose frame is heavy and slow.

  • Three bathers lie on the shingle in the lee of a groyne, a wooden screen from the fresh breeze that has been written on by unknown people having scrawled their names and a noughts and crosses puzzle written in chalk. One person wears his socks in true English style and the lady in the middle has her bag containing possessions near her head. Above them sits a lifeguard on a pair of high steps, peering along the beach with a pair of binoculars. Meanwhile, a lone seagull wheels around the coastal thermals and is caught between the wooden slats of the groyne.

  • A group of red uniformed meat market traders manhandling joints of pork from the back of a meat wagon at Macau's main meat market, on the Rua Sul do Mercado de Sao Domingos, just off the Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, in Central Macau. The men have on hooded red tunics that hide the bloodstains of dead animal carcasses, a very practical choice of colour. One man has half a pig on his shoulders while another holds a leg in his left hand. The animal carcasses look heavy and they are both struggling under their weight. There is much more meat to be offloaded from the truck and the men queue up to take their turn and remove them for sale inside the market building. Besides historical Chinese and Portuguese world-heritage relics, Macau's biggest attraction is its gaming business. Its gambling revenue in 2006 weighed in at a massive £3.6bn - about £100m more than Las Vegas. Administered by Portugal until 1999, it was the oldest European colony in China, dating back to the 16th century. The administrative power over Macau was transferred to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1999, 2 years after Hong Kong's own handover. Macau's name is derived from A-Ma-Gau or Place of A-Ma and this temple dedicated to the seafarers' goddess dates from the early 16th century.
