  • A lone walker passes by a partially-collapsed broken sign announcing the summit of Rannoch Moor, Scotland UK, 1,350 feet above sea level. He is hunched against a driving wind at this altitude and the country he is walking over is bleak and boggy, a wetland high up in the Scottish Highlands. Thick tufts of grass and moss lie about in this tough terrain, held in great affection for long-distance hikers. Rannoch Moor is a large expanse of around 50 square miles (130 km²) of boggy moorland to the west of Loch Rannoch, in Perth and Kinross and Lochaber, Highland, partly northern Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Rannoch Moor is designated a National Heritage site.

  • Making their way across a snow-swept road in Norwood, south London, an elderly couple tread warily as the snow turns to slush. It's a bleak, raw morning as the new snowfall has settled on this suburban street where cars are parked on icy kerbs. Wearing sensible hats and coats and non-slip boots the pensioners are vulnerable to icy black spots which may endanger their stability because old people are susceptible to falls and injury at these hazardous times. A very monochrome landscape, we see little colour. Instead it is a scene of jeopardy and of an uncaring society for its older generations.

  • A lone Tornado jet fighter arcs across a typically overcast sky at Southend-on-Sea on a Bank Holiday Sunday. Well-defined figures of children and adults either play nonchalantly on the beach at low tide, or watch in awe as the aircraft thunders over the Thames Estuary mud. A few stranded yachts stand upright in the low water and a groyne stretches out to sea towards the Kent coast, seen in the distance. It is a bleak and depressingly empty scene and the jet is merely a dot in the grey English sky, traditionally familiar summer weather. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903. .

With a line of Edwardian period homes beneath 100 year-old ash trees at the bottom of this hill in Ruskin Park, south London, the man runs easily in the powder wearing suitable winter sports clothing and a peaked cap. It is a bleak mid-winter and exercise in these freezing temperatures can be exhilarating if not too slippery. .

  • A Hawk jet aircraft is towed by tractor from its hangar early on a January morning at RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire. It is the start of another training day for the 'Red Arrows', Britain's Royal Air Force aerobatic team who spend five months who have been using this aircraft type sine 1980, A towing tractor is pulling the air frame from the warm glow of the shelter out into the drizzle and wind of bleak English weather. Since 1965 the Red Arrows have flown over 4,000 air shows shows in 52 countries.

  • A man of Afro-Caribbean birth, clutches at his scarf to keep out freezing temperatures during a cold snap in south London. Falling snow has settled on the man's black hair and even turned his eyelashes white after his walk from home to a local bus stop from where he is trying to commute to work. Because of skin colour, the white snowflakes make this picture a largely monochrome scene, adding to the bleak sense of wintry conditions. He is clearly unprepared for winter, wearing neither hat nor gloves and looks chilled to the bone thanks to the heat he's losing through his head and upper body. The climate of this part of the northern hemisphere can be ferocious for those ill-equipped or at the very least, unpleasant for those from warmer parts of the world.

  • A mid-morning mist sweeps across the seafront's South Beach at Scarborough, the seaside town in North Yorkshire. Kids run about on the wet sand, some leaping and some just carrying buckets of salt water for sandcastles elsewhere. With the freedom and open-space, children who perhaps live in bleak industrial towns in northern England can enjoy the fresh-air on this north-eastern coast. Their reflections are also seen on the shiny sand and although it appears to be as grim as their home may be, it is in fact a warm day but the daily sea fogs that roll across this beach, a microclimate exists and is unique to this area.

  • A middle-aged woman walks along a gloomy street in Toxteth, Liverpool, England. Passing a boarded-up greengrocer that probably once served the local community, the lady strides past its sealed window and the name of its past owner, obviously proud of her business' quality in an otherwise run-down area. Toxteth saw serious rioting in 1981 and the legacy of social-deprivation ever since meant a breakdown of law and order. Used as the epitome of poor inner-city Britain, it is located to the south of the city and is synonymous with social issues, degradation and poverty with some of the most underprivileged families in the UK. Recently many streets in the worst areas have been demolished including a threat to Beatle Ringo Starr's childhood home.

The kids have walked their dog through this field filled with old headstones and graves, playing safely in the open-air of this Welsh community. Rows of terraced Victorian homes line the distant end of this ground and then clinging to far hill side and beyond. Its population rose steeply during the period of (now defunct) mining development in South Wales, being 10,846 in 1891 and 21,945 ten years later. Lying in the mountainous mining district of the former counties of Monmouthshire and Glamorganshire, in the valley of the Ebbw Fach. In 2003, Abertillery was found to have the cheapest house prices in the United Kingdom, according to a survey by the Halifax Building Society. .

Still to towel himself down, he looks chilled to the bone but stands talking to friends out of view. The man wears dark trunks (costume) and has a large belly but otherwise looks fit and healthy, a true picture of health for a man of his age, after swimming in these seas for many years and enjoying the endorphins that are stimulated after wild, outdoor swims.

  • A boy plays snowballs at night during heavy snow showers in central London - a rare event for an inner-city. Snowflakes are falling in large amounts settling on this street in Herne Hill, South London. The lad is in his element by going outdoors at night as the showers are falling everywhere about him. He hides behind a parked car at the kerbside, crouching low to avoid detection by his elder sister. Relishing the hide and seek game they're playing and the prospect of landing the snow as a direct hit makes him look mischievous and excited.

  • As blue light fades on a bitterly cold winter's evening, the barrier of an Austrian level-crossing has been lowered to stop traffic and allow a high-speed ICE-T train to continue on its route through, near Salzburg, Austria, Europe. OBB, the Austrian Federal Railways operate a network of 5,683 km makes them the by far largest railway-company in this country. Heavy snow has fallen in this region of the Alps and deposits have settled on the fences and the glowing red stop traffic light, signalling for motorists to halt at this dangerous road-crossing location. So fast is this mode of transport, it blurs past this cold, desolate spot where only one nearby house is next to the trackside. (From a story about travelling through 6 European countries by coach in 7 days).

  • A makeshift warning sign made from plywood is roughly painted with letters declaring 'oil on beach.' It hangs on some silver railings on an unknown beach in England. The sand is strewn with sharp stones and litter and coloured (colored) a dirty brown stain high up on the shore line and more worrying, a little more distant, a father cuddles his baby child on a towel surrounded by possessions such as a cool box and the seaside toys of a happy family holiday (vacation). We look down on to this scene in disbelief that a parent lies down on such polluted terrain when health and safety considerations might have closed the entire esplanade.

  • Young men shovel brown coal from street level, and into a cellar after being dumped by delivery men on a street in Aue, a mining town in the Ore Mountains known for its copper, titanium, and kaolinite. • As blue dawn light becomes another wintry day in south London, the glow of a car's brake lights shines through a covering of fresh snow. The driver has only swept the vehicle's back window with a rear wiper but with her foot on the brake pedal, she is about to set off on a drive to work this morning on roads that have controversially, not been gritted or salted by council highway workers. The surface is therefore still snowy in this residential area of Herne Hill, SE24, London and is a treacherous surface on which to maintain wheel and tyre (tire) traction and many accidents will result, including the heavy lorry (truck) which is about to climb this hill and which will soon prevent him from going much further.

It is located to the south of the city and is synonymous with social issues, degradation and poverty with some of the most underprivileged families in the UK. Recently many streets in the worst areas have been demolished including Beatle Ringo Starr's childhood home.

  • Despite a gloriously bright summer afternoon, we see a depressing corner of Southend-on-Sea's Adventure Island. A young couple sits on some white towels in front of a wall that is adorned with graffiti and has its paint rubbed away. It is a scene of squalor and desolation in a town that makes revenue from the day-tripper holiday market. Since Victorian times, many Londoners have traditionally come to this south-east coast on the Thames Estuary, close to the capital. Towns like this have seen a marked decline since the advent of the package tourism in favour of exotic beaches in Spain.

  • A car owner attempts to shovel his way out of snow on a hill in South London. Bending down to remove the fallen snow from the road, he will again try to get a grip and friction of the slippery surface in order to make it up the gradient in Herne Hill. A van behind is already becoming impatient and is about to get past the stranded car and a passer-by looks on from the pavement, bemused. As the capital's infrastructure ground to a halt, with few trains and no buses for commuters to catch, walking and driving remained the only options.

  • A traditional red telephone box is seen on Denmark Hill, South London covered in fresh snow from overnight snowfall. Pedestrians walk past next to Ruskin Park, SE24. These K-series kiosks were designed in 1936 by the renowned designer Giles Gilbert Scott. With the increasing use of mobile phones the static phone boxes are still used in remote areas of the UK where mobile service is still patchy and in major towns and cities, their presence is becoming rarer. In rural regions however, the British red phone box is still a delight to see and use.

  • A coal delivery man deposits chunks of brown coal into the cellar via a conveyor belt for an elderly lady who stands outside in the bitter cold wearing only a housecoat this grim day. Her slippers can be seen standing among fallen briquettes that have dropped on to the wet cobbled street as the man oversees the delivery from a truck that has backed on to the pavement near a junction. A passing Trabant car rattles up the hill past a mother who pauses to ensure a safe crossing for her baby. Aue is a mining town in the Ore Mountains known for its copper, titanium, and kaolinite. The town was a machine-building and cutlery manufacturing centre in the East German era with a population of roughly 18,000 inhabitants. It was the administrative seat of the former district of Aue-Schwarzenberg in Saxony and part of the Erzgebirgskreis since August 2008..

  • A Polish man leans over to put the finishing touches to two small snowmen that now occupy a park bench on Goose Green in East Dulwich, Southwark, South London, England. This otherwise green space has seen snow falls that have gripped this part of the capital with unsalted road surfaces and commuting nightmares. But this young man is having fun with his diminutive snowy creations who have been dressed up in his and a friend's glasses, their scarves and gloves and with locally-found twigs. The park is relatively quiet with only a hint of the chaos elsewhere but the time spent on pointless pursuits is one way of enjoying adverse weather, rather than the more serious business of getting to work, proving also that snow brings out the childish nature in us all.

  • A local dad sledges down a hill in South London. Trying to pick up speed he holds his legs out in front to avoid too much breaking as deep snow has blocked this quiet road in Herne Hill, SE24. Behind the father is his son who also comes downhill, past parked cars that are all covered in snow - abandoned by owners who would otherwise have driven to work. settling on this part of London's inner-city - an unusual event - and the heaviest precipitation for 18 years.
