  • In neat diagonal rows, young Nepali boys are crouching on the ground at the British Army's Gurkha base in Pokhara, Nepal where the Britain's Ministry of Defence recruits the best choices to become fully-trained soldiers in the UK's Gurkha Regiment. Some 60,000 young Nepalese boys aged between 17 - 22 (or 25 for those educated enough to become clerks or communications specialists) report to designated recruiting stations in the hills each November, most living from altitudes ranging from 4,000 - 12,000 feet. After initial selection, 7,000 are accepted for further tests from which 700 are sent down here to Pokhara in the shadow of the Himalayas. Only 160 of the best boys succeed in the flight to the UK. The Gurkhas training wing in Nepal has been supplying youth for the British army since the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

  • 1,890 meters (6,200 feet) above sea level and surrounded by lush tea plantations in Sri Lanka's Hill Country district of Nuwara Eliya, women tea pickers bend over trees to harvest Ceylon tea leaves that are taken to the white building on the left for processing. A carpet of velvety green tea bushes stretch into the far distance. This is the heart of the island's tea industry but was a pleasure retreat of the European planters due to its temperate English climate that produces the finest leaves for the country's economy. Teas from this highest region are described as the champagne of Ceylon teas. The leaf is gathered all year round but the finest teas are made from that plucked in January and February. The best teas of the area give a rich, golden, excellent quality liquor that is smooth, bright, and delicately perfumed.

  • Lying in undergrowth, a camouflaged British infantry soldier is seen looking down the telescopic sight of the new British-made Long Range L115A3 sniper rifle on Salisbury Plain, Warminster, England. Sniping means concealment, observation and assassination, a strategy the British are using more against the Taliban in Afghanistan. Swiss Lapua .338 inch rounds (8.59mm) travel at sub-sonic speeds of 936 metres/sec, finding its target accurately up to 1,100 metres. The rifle weighs 6.8kg with telescopic image-intensified scopes to 25x life size vision, made by Schmidt & Bender. Front-mounted 'suppressor' minimises the signature normally compromising snipers' position. At £23,000 each, a £4 million contract has been awarded to Accuracy International, to provide the Army, Royal Marines and RAF. The British say this is the best sniper rifle in the world.

  • A middle-aged man, possibly in his late-fifties, holds the lead of his pet dog on a park bench in London England. Afternoon sun filters through nearby trees and the man is wearing a simple, plain white shirt. He sits crossed-legs on this warm afternoon gazing to a point in the distance looking lonely and hopeful of meeting someone else, or maybe of events in a long life. His dog is the man's best friend and companion and he guards him with a strong hand as a master should.

  • We are looking up from the ground to crowds gathered in three levels of a multi-story car park to await athletes pass during the London Marathon. The runners will make their way through the streets of East London beneath these spectators who have been patiently waiting for their friends and families to pass below. It is a great viewpoint from which to view such a sporting spectacle and we are peering up at the supporters leaning against the discoloured (discolored) concrete architecture dating back to the 1970s. It is the best elevated place to witness the race. There are three rows of 5 columns totalling 15 seperate windows and each one is full of families young and old. They resemble the compartments of a garden pet hutch where rabbits are kept in cramped conditions.

  • Bureau de change reflected in parked car window on Florence street. A bureau de change shop offers deals and best prices to tourists and Italian passers-by on a Florence street. With the countries' flags on the far left and across, are the buy and sell rates for the Euro. Lit with dot matrix numbers, the list of decimal figures can be seen from across the street. A local-looking people walk past the store situated in a pedestrian street in the commercial centre of the city and we see the typical flag stones that line the pavements and roads.

  • Before finalists take part in their last exercises at a gymkhana pony competition, these rosettes prizes seen here in close-up detail wait to be claimed by young winners and losers. From the top we see prizes for Reserve Champions then those for 1st prize, then second, third and runners-up at the very bottom. Such accolades are won and lost by fractions of a second but their importance is remembered for years afterwards as young girls desperately practice to improve their equestrian skills. A huge commitment is needed by the girls and their parents who spend great deals of money and time for these treasured prizes which can be won or lost by fractions of seconds or single points. Those that fail to win go home feeling empty-handed or perhaps cheated out of victory and glory. Those who win hang them on bedroom walls for years to come.

  • A memorial has been placed where a young man called ?Aiden? died in Prebend Street, London, England. If we just ignored this place where someone's life ended, the victim would just be a statistic but flowers are left to die too with touching poems written by family and loved-ones: ?Champion among men, now a champion of angels/A star in the Heavens has been named in memory of Aiden.? From a project about makeshift shrines: Britons have long installed memorials in the landscape: Statues and monuments to war heroes, Princesses and the socially privileged. But nowadays we lay wreaths to the ordinary who die suddenly - killed as pedestrians, as drivers or by alcohol, all celebrated on our roadsides and in cities with simple, haunting roadside remembrances.

  • Joining with the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team on the far left, are the smoke trails of forty leading European display aircraft: Spanish Patrulla Aguila; Italian Frecce Tricolori; French Breitling Jet Team and the Swiss Patrouille Suisse. All flew together in the clear, blue alpine skies on a spectacular fly-past at the Payerne Air 04 show, Switzerland. The two-day festival at the Swiss airfield is home of the Swiss Air Force who host the cream of international aerobatic display flying every September to 275,000 spectators over a weekend. European display teams and air forces gathered to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Swiss military aviation. Flying on the far left here, the Red Arrows have performed over 4,000 shows in 52 countries since 1965.

  • Seen from the cockpit of another Hawk of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's Royal Air Force aerobatic team during an In-Season Practice (ISP) training flight near their base at RAF Scampton. Seen through the explosive Plexiglass cockpit of a tenth plane, we see forward into deep blue sky as two sets of aerobatic pilots steer their machines from a crossover manoeuvre, their organic white smoke pouring from their jet pipes to emphasize their paths through the air. In front of a local crowd at the airfield the team work their way through a 25-minute series of display manoeuvres that are loved by thousands at summer air shows. After some time off, spare days like this are used to hone their manual aerobatic and piloting skills before re-joining the air show circuit. Since 1965 they've flown over 4,000 shows in 52 countries.

  • In the mid-day heat, all members of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, stand on the wings of a Hawk aircraft as the official photograph is taken on PDA Day at RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus. PDA (or 'Public Display Authority'), is when they are allowed by senior RAF officers to perform as a military aerobatic show in front of the public - following a special test flight when their every move and mistake is assessed and graded. Until that day arrives, their training and practicing is done in the privacy of their own airfield at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, UK or here in the glare of Akrotiri. The pilots are called reds and their ground crew, the Blues after their summer air show uniforms. Since 1965 the team has flown over 4,000 air shows in 52 countries.

  • A married couple ready themselves for a formal Buckingham Palace garden party in after sunshine. The lady and man have been invited to take tea with and meet the Queen along with many hundreds more in London England. They are Mr and Mrs Johnson and he is a Flag officer junior rating serving in Britain's Royal Navy. His wife adjusts his Navy cap (denoting his ship's name) to make sure it's straightened and presentable for Her Majesty. It is a proud day for her husband and his spouse, when the achievements of his military career are recognized by his Sovereign. The Queens' garden parties are held ever summer, allowing ordinary men and women from diverse members of society the chance to walk the Palace grounds and meet others from all walks of life. Some may be from the armed services and others , merely known for their charitable work or individual merit.

  • A little boy wearing a blue jump suit stands on the pavement outside his house holding the handlebars of a favourite matching blue coloured tricycle. He looks upwards towards the viewer slightly bemused about having his picture taken by his father who looks down from a standing position. Meanwhile, the boys sister towers above him dressed in a bright red coat and clean white gloves and short white socks. Alongside her is a friend also wearing gloves and a knee-length skirt but we see only their lower bodies and not their faces so they are unrecognisable - an older sibling and a girl friend. It is the summer of 1960 and while the red is vibrant, the blues and greens are more muted in this Kodachrome film which has a wonderful magenta colour cast in the mid-tones reminiscent of the classic days of early photography when shifts in color gave a faded look

  • Climbing at sub-sonic speed, a Hawk jet aircraft of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, is seen from a neighbouring aircraft during an 'In-Season Practice' (ISP), a summer training flight over the farming fields of Lincolnshire. A landscape of agriculture is behind the red airplanes as they loop after a vertical climb. The front-seated pilot and his guest passenger stare through visors towards the wing to keep a perfect 'reference', maintaining an exact formation as seen from the ground. The Red Arrows fly to within 10 feet (3 metres) apart in some formations with speeds of 480 mph (770 kph), keeping in formation is a skill they learn every winter and refine on spare days like this between public air shows. The RAF roundel, (emblem), is on the nearest wing and the other fuselage as the world falls away in perspective.

  • RAF Flight Lieutenant Jez Griggs, exerts his last, tough repetition of sit-ups to reach his target during his annual basic fitness test. Griggs is a member of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, and each member has to pass fitness exams like this in order to maintain their military pilots' licence. Held in the gym at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, it forms part of the team's Spring training month. The fatigued pilot is straining to sit upright once more while an RAF instructor shouts encouragement while holding down his feet at the ankles to ensure the sit-ups are performed perfectly. The picture is blurred to show movement during the exercise and the man's face is red with effort. Another instructor is seen in the background holding down another pilot's feet and the floor of the gymnasium is marked for indoor sport. .

  • A lone Tornado jet fighter arcs across a typically overcast sky at Southend-on-Sea on a Bank Holiday Sunday. Well-defined figures of children and adults either play nonchalantly on the beach at low tide, or watch in awe as the aircraft thunders over the Thames Estuary mud. A few stranded yachts stand upright in the low water and a groyne stretches out to sea towards the Kent coast, seen in the distance. It is a bleak and depressingly empty scene and the jet is merely a dot in the grey English sky, traditionally familiar summer weather. • Spectators watch an air show at North Weald in Cambridgeshire, England. A man films a lone aircraft that banks across the summer sky. The enthusiast's blue denim jacket is almost fully-covered with aeronautical badges which depict various foreign military aerobatic teams, including the Swiss, Norwegian and German squadrons, whose emblems have been stitched into the fabric. Plane spotters form hardcore groups of aviation pilgrims. Logging and photographing flying machines, they follow air displays across their own countries and the calendars of other European festivals that attract hundreds of thousands.
