  • High above the streets of Old Lisbon, we see a Portuguese lady leaning out of her window to hang out her washing on the line that is attached to her home's exterior wall in the Bairro Alto district - or Upper City - the oldest of Lisbon's residential quarters. Items of underwear, socks and other miscellaneous clothing have been strung out on the line that is now pegged along the crumbling wall's surface with faded, peeling plaster and paint. A TV aerial has also been fixed precariously by the window and it's shadow can be seen in the sunshine which is strong and side-lighting the scene which has a warm, morning glow about it. Lisbon's Bairro Alto quarter is located above Baixa and developed in the 16th Century. Suffering very little damage in the earthquake of 1755, it remains the area of most character and renowned for its residential and working quarter for craftsmen and shopkeepers. • Reaching out to a tower of scaffolding, high above the skyline of North London, a member of a company of abseiling construction scaffold workers make use of circus skills. Suspended with ropes, carabinas and a seat harness normally used by mountaineers, this man is wearing a safety helmet and blue overalls and his dirty gloved hand is about to make contact with yellow iron work as his colleague looks skyward, already tethered to the reinforced structure. A 60s tower block is immediately behind and suburban houses and streets are below. We see a man about to make contact with a place of safety, reaching out to his destination while spread across London's skies. Lit by flash, this picture is confusing because the viewer sees a false sense of size and scale between the iron work and the flats behind.

The Emirates Air Line (also known as the Thames cable car) is a cable car link across the River Thames in London built with sponsorship from the airline Emirates. The service opened on 28 June 2012 and is operated by Transport for London. The service, announced in July 2010 and estimated to cost £60 million, comprises a 1-kilometre (0.62 mi) gondola line that crosses the Thames from the Greenwich Peninsula to the Royal Docks. • Aerial view of a Rabbi as he the last candles before the next service in Bevis Marks Synagogue in the City of London - the oldest synagogue in the United Kingdom. As we look down on a balcony above, we look down on the holy man as he prepares his place of worship for the London Jewish community. Using a long pole that reaches up to the 7 hanging candelabras (symbolising the seven days of the week, the largest of which - represents the Sabbath) he lights every one. This central candelabrum was donated by the community of the Great Synagogue in Amsterdam, upon which Bevis Marks' interior is largely based. The candles are still lit today for weddings and the Jewish Festivals. The synagogue is located off Bevis Marks, in the City of London, built in 1701 it is a Grade I listed building.

  • The Mile End Road leading up to the City of London with the Natwest tower on the horizon. The evening exodus is underway, the rush-hour for commuters and car drivers who head east and west along this old road to and from the City of London, through the poorer east end to the wealth and prosperity of the financial district. Light trails from the vehicles's headlights and tail lights register during a time exposure and the pink city skies to the west glow above the tall office complexes on the skyline.

  • Three Parisians gain an advantage by climbing higher than pavement level to watch the patriotic Bastille Day Procession from a doorway on the Avenue Champs-Élysées, Paris. The young men have lodged themselves awkwardly a metre above the ground, resting their feet on various door catches and ledges, as if floating in mid-air. On a street traffic sign the French words 'Defense de Stationner' are written which in English translates as 'No Stopping', referring to vehicles not pedestrians. There is graffiti tagging sprayed on the walls and a brown stain at the bottom of a drainpipe
