Beneath bookshelves is the artwork of Alfred Russel Wallace by the sculptor Jane Robbins in the library of the Linnean Society, on 16th September 2023, in London, England. Alfred Russel Wallace OM FRS (1823 – 1913) was an English naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist, biologist and illustrator. He independently conceived the theory of evolution through natural selection; his 1858 paper on the subject was published that year alongside extracts from Charles Darwin's earlier writings on the topic. The Linnean Society’s Library holds outstanding historical works of natural history, and is a major repository for information on plant and animal classification, as well as the life and work of Carl Linnaeus.
